SILVER: Acheron
(A River of Pain)

BOOK ONE in THE SILVER SERIES.

2342 CE

Dishonorably discharged from the Hunter Division and banished for crimes she did not commit, Silver struggles to come to terms with her new prison-like surroundings: a segregated area of the city called the Fringe District, populated by murderers, thieves and rapists.

Starving, and desperate for money, she reluctantly accepts the Police Division's invitation to enroll in a covert Bounty Hunter program: an initiative devised to infiltrate the criminal underworld of the Fringers, and to force the very worst warrant dodging law-breakers to meet their fate--death.

Unfortunately, Silver doesn't realize that the Police Division is about to up the ante. They need more than little snippets of information and arrests--they need someone to pull the trigger. They need an executioner.

---------------------------------

SILVER: Acheron is the first book (a 40,000 word novella) in a 10-book series featuring the character of Ella 'Silver' Cross. Set more than 300yrs in the future, the Silver Series takes place in a post-apocalyptic, dystopian world where humans are a species on the brink of extinction. No longer at the top of the food chain, humans are preyed upon by the Chimera--genetic mutants that outnumber humankind 25:1.

MY REVIEW

SILVER: Acheron
(A River of Pain)

The following review is my opinion and not a paid review. I was given a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

Silver has been discharged from her job as a hunter in the Police Division. She has been banned to the Fringe District which is populated with murderers, thieves and rapists. With no job or money it leaves her without any food or the supplies she needs to survive. Silver being in a dire need for money accepts an offer from the Police Division as a Bounty Hunter. As a Bounty Hunter she will go undercover like to help the police catch the worst of the criminals in the Fringe District.

Upon arriving in the Fringe District Silver finds a woman and decides to help her. Silver decides that keeping this woman a secret from everyone is the best thing to do. When Silver took the job from the Police Division she wasn't only thinking about taking care of herself she was also thinking of this woman she had discovered and needed her help. Silver has it tough trying to survive in a post- apocalyptic world with only her self to worry about but taking care of someone else probably makes it a lot harder on her.

Silver was trained to be a killer so you would think she would have no feelings for someone she doesn't know. Even though she is a girl who knows how to stand up and fight for herself still has a heart with feelings. Which means she is still alive inside and has a reason to fight and be a survivor.

I really enjoyed reading Silver: Acheron with all of the updated scientific technology. I have read a lot of post- apocalyptic books lately that were very great reads and Silver: Acheron was no different. As of this moment post- apocalyptic and dystopian books just happen to be my favorite genre. I can't wait for the next book in the Silver series. If you like reading post- apocalyptic and dystopian books then I highly recommend you give Silver: Acheron a try.

    WHAT OTHERS ARE

    SAYING

-Carrie, book reviewer at OnceUponATwilight.com

"The characters feel real, the world feels authentic, and the story literally throbs with an underlying intensity that builds with each page. In short, Witchblood is an imaginative, satisfying read that still manages to leave the reader hungry for more.
-Thomas Winship, author of Vaempires: Revolution & Vaempires: Zombie Rising

INTERVIEW

Emma Mills

The Avid Reader: What inspired you to write Witchblood?

Emma Mills: Well anyone that has read anything about me will know that it was reading Stephanie Meyers 'Twilight' series that introduced me to the YA Paranormal genre. I then read several other great series… VA is probably my favorite… and was inspired to try writing after that.

The Avid Reader: When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

Emma Mills: I didn't have the confidence when I was younger. I always had the imagination and my nose in books, but I believed my grammar, spellings… general ability wouldn't be good enough. At university I tried a couple of ideas, but never got beyond the first hurdle (the 1st chapter!) WitchBlood in 2010 was my first proper attempt at writing and I still can't quite believe people like my books!

The Avid Reader: What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

Emma Mills: My memory is dreadful but I could read when I started school at age 4. The first proper series I remember loving was Enid Blyton's Faraway Tree series. I read them to my little girl now!

The Avid Reader: What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

Emma Mills: YA remains my favorite genre. I don't have the time or inclination to read heavy pieces of literature… I left the book club I was in because frankly the books are always depressing! The last book I read was called Earth Girl by Janet Edwards and I'm gutted I have to wait a while till the sequel!

The Avid Reader: What is your favorite book?

Emma Mills: I honestly can't choose… nope, no way! I'm staring at my YA bookshelf in my study and looking at Harry Potter, Twilight, VA, Northern Lights, Terry Pratchett… impossible!

The Avid Reader: If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

Emma Mills: Oooo can I travel forward instead? After just reading Earth Girl I really fancy trying their colonized planets and portals! No wars, no violence…yep that's where I'll go to year 2792!

The Avid Reader: When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

Emma Mills: Well so far with my WitchBlood series it has been quite smooth. The first few chapters are always a nightmare and take me ages, but then the story starts flowing…

The Avid Reader: Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

Emma Mills: Yes, we should call our home Menagerie Mills as we currently have a large black dog (Labrador), a tabby cat, three chickens called Hermione, Ginny & Myrtle, a Rex Rabbit and several fish!

The Avid Reader: What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

Emma Mills: My favorite dinner is vegetarian enchiladas which I make with asparagus, mushrooms and loads of other yummy veggies… but I seriously couldn't live without cake! I usually bake once a week.

The Avid Reader: Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Emma Mills: Just to grow your idea until the characters begin to take shape… and take over your brain… and then have a go. Try and start writing and see what happens. That's all I did!

MY REVIEW

Witchblood

The following review is my opinion and not a paid review. I was given a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

When we left off in Witchcraft book #2 in the Witchblood series, Jess and everyone else thought that Daniel, Jess' creator and the guy or vampire whom she is in love with along with his creator Eva think they both died in the explosion. The explosion that was caused by a null bomb that turns vampires into dust upon their death. Jess' is very upset over losing the love of her life. Jess is not convinced that Daniel is dead because she still feels a tiny spark of the connection that she and Daniel shared. Jess herself would have died in this explosion if it had not been for Luke an angel who Jess fed from when Daniel did not show up in time to let Jess feed from him. Jess' blood was drained from her causing her to almost die had it not been for Luke.

With Jess being half-vampire and half-witch she wants and needs to explore her witch side. So after going to court for killing the vampire that almost raped and killed her. The council concluded that she killed him in self defense and released into the custody of her Aunt who lives in American. Jess and her new friend Brittany who is also a witch both go to American to live with her aunt. Brittany being a minor and needing a sponsor like Jess convinces her aunt to take Brittany in as well and help her get her witch licenses too. Jess wants to be on her own, to be her own person and own boss. Having her licenses will help Jess and Brittany to accomplish this. Jess doesn't want to be connected to Daniel or anyone else in this way.

After moving to America Brittany wants to find her family and eventually become a part of their coven. She wants to know and be with her mother's family. When she meets Jess' cousin Noah they make a deal with each other. Brittany wants Noah to help her find her family while Noah wants her to talk Jess into feeding from him so that he can get his sister Susannah to come home. Brittany's family are into voodoo, hoodoo or whatever you want to call it. They are both very close and similar. She believes that her family are good people and not bad people. She is so innocent that she thinks her family would not hurt her much less dabble in dark magick. But when Brittany goes to visit them and Jess comes after her to rescue her she is in for a very big whopper of a surprise.

While Brittany has gone in search of her family Jess meets up with Daniel. She didn't know that he was in America. But when she sees him and he tells her again how sorry he is for making everyone think he was dead and tells her how much he still loves her and wants to be with her. She is not ready to forgive him. Daniel loves Jess and will do or wait as long as he has to in order for Jess to be a part of his life again. Jess loves Daniel but he hurt her so much that she not sure if she can trust him.

You know I have really, really loved all three books in the Witchblood series but book #3 Witchlove is my favorite one. I loved that in Witchlove we get to see the witch side of Jess. Not that I don't l don't love the vampire side. I love reading about both witches and vampires. So with the Witchblood series I get to read about both. I think Emma has out done herself in writing Witchlove. The first two books Witchblood book #1 and Witchcraft book #2 are both excellent books don't get me wrong here but Witchlove was out of this world. I can not wait to read the next book in the series Witch Hunt. I was so happy to hear that there would be a fourth book. This is such fantastical news. Thanks Emma for writing a fourth book and I hope you continue writing more and more books in this series.

I was so surprised and happy at the same time after reading the ending of Witchlove. I couldn't believe it but I am so happy for Jess. I can't wait to find out how Jess will feel when learns of this news. Will she be happy or will she be sad? In one way I think she will be happy but then in another way I think she maybe kind of sad too. Emma please, please, pleaseeeeeee hurry and write Witch Hunt.

If you have not read the Witchblood series well the only thing I can say then is that you need to go right now and pick up a copy of all three books. If you like reading about vampires, witches or angels then there is no way you could not like the Witchblood series. I can honestly say that Emma will not let you down with her writing or with the Witchblood series. Emma is another writer that I think no not think know that we should all keep our eyes on. Why you ask? Well not that she's not already but she is and will be a star one day. She is going to be right there with the big dogs like Stephen King.

His love for his last wife still burns in his soul four centuries after her death.

When the service they render to the noblemen of Cornerstone Deep brings him face to face with Anna, something unexpected happens. In a realm of silent souls, hers calls to him. He responds with a kiss-one that joined with the spell of servitude she inhaled, binds her soul.

Breaking ancient covenants, angering the lords, and bringing the gods' wrath upon him, Cole tries desperately to undo his wrong and free his love-despite the determination of the nobleman to keep her.

"My life is a mirage of endless time. But you in this moment engulf me, rivet my mind, encompass my soul."

MY REVIEW

Cornerstone Deep

The following review is my opinion and not a paid review. I was given a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

The Shilo brothers Cole, James and Vincent are all wizards who come from another realm or dimension. The Shilo brothers live a lot longer than people here they live to be hundreds of years old. They work for Lord Dressen who is the law maker. They harvest humans and erase their memory for Lord Dressen. Lord Dressen then takes them into his home to work as his servants.

Cole, James and Vincent living hundreds of years are always looking for their soul mates. James has been married quiet a few times in his lifetime while Cole has only been married once to his soul mate Mianna. Cole has never re married because he is looking for the reincarnation of Mianna. He finds her when Lord Dressen sends them to bring a young woman, Anna to his manor as one of his servants. By the time Cole figures out that Anna is Mianna it is too late her mind has been erased. Cole has to find a way to get her back.

Cornerstone Deep was a more than just a great read it was a fantastic, magical read. I think that most people are always looking for their soul mates. Someone to love with all their hearts and who loves them just as much. When you meet that one special person and you look into their eyes and you feel like you have know that person all your life or maybe there are times you look at them and a feeling just comes over you like I have know you before but in a different time then you know you have met your soul mate.

Wouldn't it be phenomenal to know that when you fell in love and you knew that when the day person you loved died would not be the last time you saw them? That your souls would be looking for each other in another time and when you met your souls would know. That would be so grand.

"Every breath you take is a song to my soul."

MY REVIEW

Cornerstone Deep Echoes

The following review is my opinion and not a paid review. I was given a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

Well Cole found a way to get Anna back from Lord Dressen to try and make things right with Anna. But things don't go as he planned while trying to save Anna and give her life back to her. Cole loves Mianna his soul mate very much and wants her back. He thinks with having Anna he will have her back in his life. But Cole's attempt to give Anna her life back goes horribly wrong.

I understand wanting your soul mate back but If having your soul mate back messes up some one elses' life and having that life taken from them then that is not right. How could any one claim to love someone so much and then mess it up so badly? Mianna has lived her life, Anna deserves to be able to do the same thing. Lord Dressen didn't know what love really is or he would never want to take her mind from her and turn her into a puppet, a robot. All he wants is someone he can control and have do exactly as he says.

Yes, Cole really made a mess of things and yes he did Anna wrong but I think he did love her and he tried to give her life back. Even though things didn't go as planned he did try and you can't blame a man for trying can you? I think Coles heart was in the right place but as they say love is blind and you don't always see the truth until it is too late if ever.

Blog Tour: The Daguerreotypist by Christopher Savio

The Daguerreotypist
by Christopher Savio

About The Author:
I spent my life bouncing back and forth between Southern California and New Jersey. During my elementary school years I discovered that I have dyslexia. Therefore, I learned to read with a lot of help from my parents and eventually got good enough to read novels. With the influence of my father’s interest in horror movies and history, I read two things, Stephen King and history books. It’s no surprise my stories, have a touch of both in them.
Working with the public, including the rental car business, my father’s diner, and later evolving into a teacher of Native American history, criminology, and special education, has allowed me to draw upon experiences that reveal much about human behavior. My writing reflects many of the different personalities and settings have I’ve come to know first hand. Of course I’ve never come across a demon, witch, the devil himself or a serial killer, but the personalities and people I’ve met are represented within each one of my characters.

On a personal note, I have a family, a house and the white PVC picket fence. I graduated from college and have a dog my kids call Roscoe. (Max from The Beckoning) What’s of more interest to you is that my favorite hobby is writing, the scarier the better. If you love stories that will scare the pants off you that are priced for the 99 per centers like myself, then you have come to the right website.

Blurb:

Funny thing about life is that people seldom recognize its beauty or what they have until it’s gone. In 1842 New York City, Isaiah Whitfield, a pioneer in photography (daguerreotypist) and a religious zealot, is no different. Incapable of recognizing anything but the bad in the world, he embarks upon a crusade to perfect society and to bring about the Second Coming. If he can scare people away from sin, even if he has to kill the sinners to do it, Isaiah is certain that he alone can bring about Christ’s return. That is until Satan makes him an offer he can’t refuse.

In 2012, Rachel and her fiancé occupy Isaiah’s old apartment. Rachel, outwardly happy with her life, deep down wants something more. When an undeveloped daguerreotype is found hidden in her studio’s wall it sets her life and the fate of New York City on a collision course with disaster. Rachel falls hopelessly in love with the man in the old picture, but unwittingly frees the now demonic serial killer, Isaiah Whitfield, from Hell. True to form, he immediately goes on killing sprees in two different centuries.

As Rachel finds out, loving a time traveling serial killer straight from Hell has its downsides. For Isaiah, complete blindness to the wonders of this world may have ruined him for ever. Can the power and beauty of love change a demonic serial killer? Can Rachel come to her senses before she loses her fiancé and possibly her own life in the process? In the summer of 2012, the fates of many in New York City depend upon it.

EXCERPT

Missed Opportunities

Listening to the priest on the park bench, Isaiah felt all of his emotions and hatred from his own failures come to the surface. The guilt generated from committing such heinous acts disappeared, replaced by the euphoria of finally being able to pin his failings on another. Killing the priest didn't bring him joy; it was what the priest represented. Isaiah had always been a loner. When he found God, he believed he would find joy and happiness. He thought the pain of loneliness would be erased because of his devotion. When that didn't pan out, he took the Second Great Awakening concept of perfecting society a little farther than prescribed by most. None of it worked. His crusade failed and society spurned him. The emotion that left his body with every swipe at the priest with his razor brought him ecstasy. This attack was louder and more vicious than all the others combined. The blood splattered all about and the priest's flesh fell from the bone bringing him deranged happiness. When he finished, Isaiah sat on the bench next to the bloody mess that moments ago had been a human being, smiling blankly into the night.

Regaining his sense of consciousness, Isaiah rummaged through the priest's pockets, looking for money. Snatching about ten dollars, Isaiah remained crouched in front of the bench and the priest's lifeless body. The money didn't amount to much, but at least he could pay his landlord enough rent to keep his tiny pigsty of an apartment long enough for him to return from the twenty-first century.

Getting up, Isaiah stuffed the money into his coat pocket and started walking back to his apartment, hoping he'd once again gotten away without being seen. To his dismay, out of the corner of his eye, he noticed a curtain swaying in the second-story window of a house not one hundred feet away. Instantly a frantic voice boomed across the expanse of the park. He knew, if he was going to keep himself out of Hell, it was imperative he make the jump first thing in the morning. With the crying and carrying-on inside of the apartment to his right, he knew the cops would arrive shortly. He didn't have the luxury of the body being found sometime the next morning; things would be sped up this time around.

Keeping to the shadows as much as possible and switching sides of the street each time he saw someone walking toward him, Isaiah made it home with relative ease. The calm he experienced in his neighborhood at that moment would be gone early in the morning. It was a good thing that Isaiah planned to leave the nineteenth century as soon as possible. In preparation for his morning getaway, he turned up the oil lamp, checked himself in the mirror, and washed up to make sure he didn't pay his landlord covered in blood.

What he saw in the mirror would have horrified most people. For Isaiah, it was business as usual by this point. It was a wonder to him that he'd made it this far without being seen by anyone in either time period. As he cleaned his face, the person he least wanted to see in the world appeared and bounced on his bed.

"For a bed, this is a fine piece of shit. Don't you think?"

"Ya know, I liked you better as Belial Stanley. You were a little pushy then, but you were much more tolerable."

Belial sat back on the bed and rested his shoulders against the splintery wood of the wall.

"Easy now, big guy. It isn't my fault you went and killed a priest, an instrument of God sent here to help you."

Isaiah wanted to lash out at Belial. The words he spoke, however, sank in before he went off on a tirade. Isaiah stood there, flabbergasted, unable to speak for a moment.

Laughing at the look upon Isaiah's face, Belial gathered himself long enough to ask: "Remember when you asked if God could forgive anything?"

"Yes," Isaiah said.

"Most people are lucky. They realize at some point that God can forgive. He can forgive you at any time. Some people realize it immediately, and some realize it much later. Then there are schmucks like yourself who never realize it. That was your get-out-of-jail-free card, you ass. You, however, tore it up. You became angry and killed the hand that was sent here to help you out. Think about it, how many times would a priest come out at midnight and sit right next to someone for apparently no reason?"

Isaiah stood there. Anyone could have sensed the anger coming out of him.

Belial continued to grin at him.

10 Favorite Books

1. The Story of Submarines by George Weller

Those of you who have followed my tour probably know by now that I suffer from dyslexia. At a young age I struggled with reading and writing and took special classes to help me. The very first book I ever read on my own was The Story of Submarines. It took me a few years but I finally did it. This book will always be special. It helped me unlock a world I have grown to love.

2. Pet Cemetery by Stephen King

I love the plot and the unique twist that King gives us here in this book. What father wouldn't be tempted to bring his son back to life after such a terrible accident. King reminds us that no matter what or how horrible the tragedy in our lives, we are powerless to change it and even if we could, there are some things that should simply be left alone. Of course he does it in a way that sends shivers down your spine. That is what I love, a good message that makes you think while making you squirm.

3. Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee by Dee Brown

I am a small part Native American and when I wasn't watching scary movies with my father I was playing cowboys and Indians with my friends and always demanded to be the Indian. That interest grew into me studying Native American history in my spare time since I was very young. I now teach a Native American course and have written the textbook for my class. (This will be published within the next year) Dee Brown is able to bring to life in vivid detail the horrors of one of the blackest marks on American detail. Even though I often wanted to put the book down, I found myself compelled to keep reading. Great job Mr. Brown.

4. Son of the Morning Star by Evan S Connell

Another book about Native American History that I love. Evan S. Connell weaves together the history from both sides of the story and keeps you reading. It is intelligently written and any book where Custer gets his just desserts is a good book. He is one of my least favorite characters I teach about in my Native class.

5. The Tommy Knockers by Stephen King

Who doesn't like a book about a town being taken over an alien spaceship? Besides, one of the characters in the book invents a machine she attaches to her head that writes complete best selling novels while she sleeps. How cool would that be?

6. 11/22/63 by Stephen King

If any one has read The Daguerreotypist, they would know that I love the concept of time travel. This is a bit of a departure by King as it does not contain the same type of scary elements that most of his books do. It does make one think about time travel and the butterfly effect associated with the concept while taking you back into past on very interesting journey. The love and romance may be a bit overplayed here, but overall it is a great work by one of the best author's of our time.

7. The Client by John Grisham

To me this is Stephen King with out the paranormal. John Grisham does a masterful job of blending in his talents of description with his ability to tell a story. What comes out of this is a story that is every bit as scary as something King could conjure up simply because the monsters are replaced by real people. The realism of this book, makes it one of the best and scariest books I've read. After all, paranormal creatures in our minds very often are not as scary as our fellow human beings.

8. The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson

This may be the first horror book I ever read. After reading The Story of Submarines I read a lot of history books and I began to look for something else. Being that my father had a fetish for horror movies and after watching a number of them I decided to read a horror book. Not only did this book scare me and make sleep with the lights on, it sent me down the path of reading more in the genre and eventually to writing about it.

9. Thinner by Stephen King

Could retribution from a stranger get any scarier? After reading this book, I was much kinder to people I didn't know.

10. Bloom County, Tunes for Our Times by Berkeley Breathed

Although this is a graphic book of cartoons and maybe not what many would select as their favorite, this book always makes me smile. The comic strip was popular when I was in high school and helps bring back a lot of good memories. I take it out and reread every once in a while.

An unusual young woman and fledgling journalist, Luna has various restrictive oddities, all of which prevent any kind of physical intimacy. Abusive parents take pleasure in Luna's misery and isolation, yet Luna strives to make them proud, to finally earn their elusive love - something she craves almost as much as the painless touch of a lover.

When she learns of a tragic story involving the kidnap of baby Esta, she jumps at the chance to investigate, dragging her Shadows along for the ride within the murky depths of her mind.

Meanwhile, a dark stranger visits Luna's dreams and stalks her reality. In lieu of the real thing, their intimate moments excite rather than terrify. Nestled within his presence, she begins to sense an urgent message of danger - a message she struggles to interpret, until they finally meet….

Her investigations lead Luna to a vibrant seaside town, hiding copycat aliens and an underworld of Supernaturals. Here, she comes face-to-face with her own, terrifying identity. Confronted with life-changing decisions and the harshest of truths, Luna questions her sanity, searching for logic, feeling deceived by both.

"Esta…Can you hear me? Please wake up. I've waited forever to speak with you. I can't bear another day." My eyes opened, but instead of looking for the owner of the voice, they moved toward the blood bag.

But it had gone.

Becoming frantic, I looked to the voice and asked, "Where's it gone?"

"Oh, that." Reading my reaction, the voice replied, "You've had enough blood for a while. That's just GJ. It's …better for you." He tried to stroke my hair, but I flinched. He averted his gaze, eyes crowned by a pinched brow. "Anyway, you can leave here soon… Come home with us." He sounded familiar, yet I couldn't focus. Then he bounced on the bed next to me, excited. "We're throwing you a huge welcome home ball next week, Esta. It'll be the biggest ball yet. Everyone will be there. They're all desperate to see the returning Princess." His words grew high-pitched, loud, but still didn't penetrate my craving for blood. My gums burned, head spun. "How about that? Your own ball." I felt a cool fingertip beneath my chin, lifting my face toward the voice, "Open your eyes for me, Esta. Let me see them."

I slapped his finger away and opened my eyes. "See what?" I looked up to the owner of the voice. "It's you?" I swallowed down the nausea, "It's all real then?" I panted, anticipation and hunger gripping at my throat.

The excitable voice softened, "Relax, Esta, breathe."

BLURB

The Garden

Nearly every religion and society in the world today begins with the story of Adam and Eve. And yet, this most basic story is couched in mysticism, myth, and vague detail. Did such a couple really exist? Were they the first man and woman on our planet, or is there more to the story?

For two hundred thousand years the Neanderthal race ruled Earth, then mysteriously, 40,000 years ago they disappeared forever leaving behind a new race of people -- the Cro-Magnon. Why? What happened back then that changed our history forever?

The Garden of Eden -- a perfect home built and designed for two people until the serpent arrived. Who was the serpent? And what was he doing there in the first place? Is there a chance that the serpent is actually a reference to some hidden sexual transgression?

Imagine traveling billions of light years across space to settle an unknown world populated by primitive barbarians. Imagine being alone, just you and your spouse, the two of you in charge of an entire world with only your faith and your mission to guide you -- and, of course, the devil waiting for that fatal mistake.

The Garden

Adam and Eve rose and walked toward the edge of the meadow and a pile of granite rocks that jutted abruptly out of the ground where the grass ended. Though covered with a dusting of snow, the boulders afforded them a sturdy foothold and it was relatively easy to climb to the mountain's vertex. As they climbed, the two could tell that the mountain was quite high, perhaps eight or nine thousand metrons. As they neared the apex, the two caught glimpses of the ocean that lay twenty hexons or more in the distance-the water was a pristine, a sparkling blue, but that was nothing compared to what came next. At the very pinnacle of the peak, Adam and Eve had their breath stolen away. For there, lying below to their bird's eye view was one of the most beautiful and picturesque sights that they had ever seen on the Terran planet-a huge peninsula of magnificence and majesty jutting into the blue ocean waters.

Adam and Eve gazed upon the long, slender land mass that protruded into the sea for a good fifty to sixty hexons. The actual length was difficult to judge because the land mass became obscured in the distance. Its width was also hard to ascertain for its shape was erratic, but the range appeared to be between twenty hexons at its narrowest point and forty hexons at its widest. The peninsula also contained a small mountain range with snow-capped peaks and there was a large river angling the length of the cape. The river appeared swift in its movement, dividing the finger of land in half before finally emptying out into the sea somewhere at the peninsula's end.

Transfixed by the beauty of the rugged terrain, Adam and Eve gazed upon the picturesque scene that now held a mystery all its own. For at the base of the mountain upon which they stood, the couple could see where the peninsula merged with the mainland. And there, curiously enough, were two straight lines running parallel to each other-lines that ran the entire width of the peninsula, forming a barrier or dual wall. Did this wall protect the peninsula in some way? That was Adam's immediate thought-for on the mainland side he could see animals grazing and wilderness. But on the peninsula side there were checkerboard patches of cultivated land, and a network of thin, web-like trails, and dwellings. Was that a village partially hidden by the trees?

Suddenly Eve noticed something. "Is that a pyramid?" she queried, pointing to a dark colored mass, it form nestled against the base of the mountains.

"I think so," said Adam.

"How?" remarked Eve. "What is this place?"

"This is Eden," replied Lanna, proudly, his form rising up and behind them. "This will be your home on Terran. It is being prepared for you and your future off spring. It is a garden retreat on which Plon and Janno have been working on for almost seventy-five years. They are building it in anticipation of your arrival."

The Summoner's Tale

CHAPTER ONE

BLACK SWAN FIELD TRAINING MANUAL Section I: Chapter 1, #1

The plural of vampire is vampire.

When the rush of activity subsided, he found himself alone with his own thoughts; a condition that was more than familiar since he had spent hundreds of years that way. Without the distraction of his friends' banter, since his proposed staff had left Edinburgh, he had begun to see his task not just as a job, but as a mission, one immersed in the duality of joy and gravity.

He had never considered himself to be impatient. Quite the contrary, everything he had ever pursued in earnest, from painting to music to writing, had depended upon patience. But, his cognizance of the enormity of the burden he had accepted had grown over the past months and he had turned to brooding about the time that was passing.

Every day that nothing was accomplished was a day when more people had their humanity taken from them, another day when vampire remained imprisoned in bodies infected with the foulest disease imaginable, and, also, another day when people died.

The project was moving painfully slowly. Everyone who had originally been assigned to work with Baka was gone: married, retired, whatever. Everyone except Heaven - who had turned out to be anything but.

The large work space, intended for several people, seemed deserted with him alone most of the time. He worked from early in the morning till late at night, challenging both the hours in the day and the fact that he was one excruciatingly short-handed task force leader.

When Heaven was present, her moods ran the range of a shallow bell curve from disagreeable to surly to sullen. He admitted that he had provoked her on their first meeting, for reasons that were a mystery to him. Something about her instantly put him on edge and made him feel anxious.

Even though that feeling persisted, he had attempted to make amends so that they could work together amicably. To no avail. She was prickly to the core, spurning every effort on his part to develop a rudimentary standard of civility. She behaved as if simple courtesy was more than she could manage which meant that "nice" was a goal way too distant.

He not only had to work with a person who detested his very presence, but, adding insult to injury, it seemed he couldn't shake an inexplicably strong attraction to her. He found himself staring at the curve of her cheek with her head bowed over work. Or the shine of her chestnut hair when she walked through a ray of light. Or the way her lips pursed whenever he gave her something to do. It was damned aggravating.

To make matters worse, he seemed to have lost interest in pursuing other women.

At exactly fifteen after five she double checked her wristwatch, closed an open folder, rose, pushed her arms into her sweater jacket, put her purse on her shoulder and, like every other day, walked out of the office without saying goodnight.

He perpetually struggled to concentrate because the space seemed to vibrate with a low level, but annoying irritation when she was there. It was stand to reason that he would be glad to see her gather her things and go, but, in fact, he hated it even more when she left. He heaved a big sigh. Fuck me.

Baka had been a person with a well-developed sense of morality, and a well-functioning conscience before he became a vampire. During the last hundred years of life as a vampire, having survived long enough to blessedly recover his understanding of right and wrong, he had voluntarily turned himself into The Order and served as "consultant" voluntarily consuming only artificial sustenance.

No. He had never been short on conscience. And that conscience was rubbing a hole in his brain telling him that it would be wrong to simply sit at a desk and plan a strategy on paper while, at the same time, doing nothing. So, keeping his own counsel, for better or worse, he determined that he would continue to work as a bureaucrat during the day, but would spend his nights - at least part of them - looking for others he might help back to the light.

He had worked with Monq at Jefferson Unit labs to develop a delivery solution. Taking a page from the methodology of the late Gautier Nibelung, they had decided that the safest and most effective approach would be dart gun. Each dart was outfitted with a tiny canister that would puncture on impact releasing a formula that was part stun and part cure. The proper dose of stun solution had been determined by tests on Baka himself. So he knew it worked. First hand. Obviously vampire must be incapacitated while the viral antidote works. As medicinal remedies go, it is fast working, but not instant. There is a delay of two to four hours between introduction to the system and complete reversal of the disease, depending upon the age and constitution of the individual.

His plan wasn't perfect. It depended on encountering one vampire at a time and extracting him, while paralyzed, without engaging other vampire. Tricky, but the alternative was waiting for a task force to be vetted, assembled, and trained. And waiting was the one thing he couldn't manage. Maybe it wasn't the smartest thing he'd ever done, but, hell, he'd had a long life.

To his advantage, he still had certain attributes that were extra human. Not like comic book heroes. More like human plus. No one knew if these benefits would fade away over time, but, for now, he was a little stronger, a little faster, and could see in the dark a little better than most people. All traits very useful for vampire hunting.

It just so happened that he found his assigned base of operations in prime territory that qualified as a vampire magnet on all counts. In Edinburgh's Old Town there was a large pedestrian population that came out at night and it was built on top of an underground system that was not utilized to any extent that would interfere with the needs of vampire. All this was literally in sight of his office - five minutes' walk away.

In a darkly poetic way, it was fitting that vampire would thrive in Edinburgh's underground city which consisted of a system of tunnels, caverns, and cells cut into the much softer sandstone under the rock that the above-ground Old Town is built upon. It's a place with grisly history where thousands of hapless poor lived in darkness, packed together without sanitation and with the vilest of criminals. Plague victims were not removed and buried or burned, but just sealed in their cells.

Modern day Ghost Tours offer a shallow excursion - shallow because individuals don't want to stay in the underground very long. Words like "creepy" are frequently used even by hard-core insensitives. That leaves miles of maze for a vampire haven.

Baka had been a vampire long enough to know all about how they think. He knew that the days of the Beltane festival would be a gorge fest for vampire. The Royal Mile, just over the heads of vampire living in the Underground, would be crowded with visitors to the city, visitors intent on celebration and revelry, danger being the last thing on their minds. It would be a blessing to vampire in the original sense of the word which was bloodletting; when, as a rite of passage, young pagans would stand in a pit under a grate where a bull was sacrificed and bathe in the blood that fell.

So Baka finished his day, went to dinner alone, and slowly savored every bite of his of actual food. Afterward, driven by a heartfelt desire to do some good in the world, he pulled on a pair of cargo pants and equipped the dozen pockets with two dart guns and as many canisters as he could carry without being slowed down. He descended the stairs to the main foyer wondering if, even partial redemption for a long life of misdeeds, is possible. The fact that he was not accountable for that infamous history should have given him some peace of absolution. But didn't. He said good evening to the doorman and headed out into the night.

INTERVIEW

Victoria Danann

The Avid Reader: What inspired you to write A Summoner's Tale?

Victoria Danann: This is actually the third installment in a serial saga. So you could say it was inspired by the first two books.

The Avid Reader: When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

Victoria Danann: Eight-years-old or so.

The Avid Reader: What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

Victoria Danann: I remember my dad laughing at me when I was three-years-old because every night he would ask what I wanted to hear and every night I said "Snow White".

The Avid Reader: What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

Victoria Danann: Paranormal, Paranormal Romance.

The Avid Reader: What is your favorite book?

Victoria Danann: Memnock the Devil, by Anne Rice

The Avid Reader: You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

Victoria Danann: Karen Marie Moning.

The Avid Reader: If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

Victoria Danann: If I could take all my experience with me, I would go back to about age sixteen and give myself a do-over.

The Avid Reader: When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

Victoria Danann: For me writing is as easy as breathing - so long as my outline is finished first.

The Avid Reader: Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

Victoria Danann: German Shepherd girl, two-years-old.

The Avid Reader: What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

Victoria Danann: Cheeseburgers with everything plus hickory sauce and jalapenos. Bean and cheese nachos with jalapenos. Anything chocolate.

The Avid Reader: Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Victoria Danann: Yes. Stay the hell away from "creative writing" classes. It can't be taught any more than someone can teach you to carry a tune. Either you can or you can't. If you can, do it. If you can't, move on to something else. It's a big world. I'm not saying this to be mean. I'm never going to play guitar like Carlos Santana. The last time I tried to play Black Magic Woman my left hand seized up in muscle cramps for weeks. If that's what happens to your brain when you try to write, keep looking until you find the thing you were born to do.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Though works of fiction are a departure for me, I have had this series simmering on the back burner of my mind for years, but time is at a premium. In addition to authoring and illustrating Seasons of the Witch and writing course work for Seasons in Avalon, I play Classic Rock music and manage Houston's premier variety and R&B band.

This series will include some of my education in the paranormal and fictionalized anecdotes from my journals during the years when I was a practicing "metaphysician", but most of the material is fantasy - of course.
