After barely escaping the Middle East alive in Z PLAN:BLOOD ON THE SAND, Cale finds himself on a journey not many men could endure. When he deployed to Iraq he never could have known the world would soon be overrun by a deadly virus, turning the human race into a walking nightmare. His story picks up right where it left off in BLOOD ON THE SAND. After days of drifting alone in the open sea, he is sure the chance of rescue is hopeless. His thoughts nearly drive him mad until finally a voice crackles over the boat radio. Only his rescue isn't quite what he imagined it would be. Cale will have to trust his instincts, and let his wits aid him as he continues his grueling mission to make it home. Follow Cale as he travels land and sea in book two of the Z PLAN series.

Excerpt:

Cale awoke to Naeem’s terrified face. The room was filled with shouts and moans. Naeem was shaking Cale violently, pointing at their cellmate. He was convulsing on the floor, where he’d vomited blood.

“Shit! He’s infected” Cale exclaimed.

He wasn’t alone; the occupants of the two farthest cells were also infected. One of them had a death grip on the elderly woman through the bars of his cage. One of the younger women tried to assist her, but the old woman had already been bitten. The second young woman pressed against Cale’s cell, screaming for help. The Middle Eastern man sat up, awkwardly at first, but then jumped forward and grabbed her easily. Before Naeem and Cale could react, he’d pulled her arm through the bars and had taken a mouthful of flesh. She shrieked in pain and fell to the floor, clutching the bloody hole that was once her tricep.

Together, Cale and Naeem pulled their undead cellmate to the floor and took turns stomping on his skull until it was a soggy pile of bone and brain matter. The man’s body continued to twitch, despite his brain being stuck to the bottom of Cale’s boot.

The duo backed up against the wall, far away from the cages that contained the undead. They watched as the infected feasted on those who hadn’t reanimated yet, their mouths slurping and smacking. The sound was horrible, but the smell was worse. The stench of bile and feces flooded the tiny space.

“Hey! We need help in here!” Cale shouted, hoping a guard would hear him, but no one came.

My Review:

I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

Red Tides picks up right where Blood on the Sand left off with Cale floating along in a boat in the water. He is trying to stay alive, beat the zombies and survive the virus that caused the world to go to h3ll and back. All Cale wants is to make it home to America to find his wife and baby. Ever since the attack of the zombies Cale has been on along journey fighting zombies and humans alike just trying to make it back to his home land.

Just as Cale is just about to give up all hope while he is on the boat. He is running out of food, supplies, fuel and ammunition. A big ship, a submarine comes out of the water right next to his little old boat. The people on the submarine take Cale on board ship with them and keep him quarantine form the other soldiers for a while so that they can make sure that he is not infected. Cale soon learners that he wasn't saved by these people because they great people with big hearts and is only trying to stay alive themselves but have actually taken him along with others that they have come across as slaves to do all of their work for them. They have also taken all of these men so that they can take them out with them on land when they go to look for more supplies in order to have someone that they can throw between them and a zombie if the need arises.

Cale goes along with what they tell him to do up to a point. He is smart enough to know that the only way for him to stay alive and make it back to his family is just to go along with them at the moment and wait for his opportunity to escape or they let him go. At the moment the smartest thing for him to do is do exactly what they tell him to do. Make them think that they are in charge and have the upper hand but just as soon as his window of opportunity opens up then he will high tail it out of there. If they don't let him go before that is. Not all of the men that are on the submarine are bad men some are good just like Cale.

I love dystopian and zombie books and I can honestly say that I have loved reading the Z Plan series and can't wait to read more. I can't wait to find out what Cale and his new buddies find on American soil after the zombie apocalypses. If you like zombie books then you are going to love the Z Plan books. Mikhail knows how to suck you right into Cale's life and make you think that you are right there with him fighting the zombies and the humans too.

Blurb:

Cale was sent to Iraq with the usual thoughts any Soldier going to war might have; being lonely away from his family, not wanting to take another human's life, and above all, the fear of never returning home. Although well trained, nothing could have prepared him for the horror he was about to face.

Cale never thought the thing that could keep him from ever seeing his wife and daughter again would be a zombie apocalypse. As he and a handful of fellow Soldiers escape their base after a massive zombie attack, becoming deserters in order to survive, he begins the long and unexpected journey home through the harsh terrain of the desert; a barren landscape now swarming with not only undead cannibals, but also the enemy he was originally sent to fight.

The newly formed group plans to travel west, find a boat and maybe, with a bit of luck, make it back to America. Cale is tested beyond his imagination and brought to the brink of insanity as he loses friends while fighting the flesh eating masses. He risks his life for weeks, focused on holding his wife and daughter in his arms again. It seems all hope is lost when he finds himself alone and adrift at sea ... but is hope really lost?

Inspired by my experiences as a U.S. Army Soldier in Iraq, BLOOD ON THE SAND delves into the idea of not just surviving a zombie apocalypse but making the seemingly impossible trek home. It is the first book in the Z PLAN series.

About The Author:

 photo MikhailLerma.jpg

Mikhail Lerma was raised in the small town of Holdrege Nebraska. In the third grade he wrote his first short story, in which the main character was a monkey. Not taking his career as a writer too seriously after that, he finished his high school years by joining the army when he was only 17. He spent 10 years in the army starting as a truck driver and eventually becoming a combat medic.

While deployed to Iraq in 2007 he spent missions in a turret as gunner. In his free time he began writing a story having nothing to do with monkeys. Only time will tell if this was a good career move. With encouragement from his friends and family he decided to start taking his writing seriously. Storytelling has become a passion of his, with a strong interest in horror and science fiction. He is currently going to school to become a paramedic, and finishing his first series for Permuted Press.

He lives in Iowa with his wife and three daughters. He does not have a pet, but if anyone would like to donate a male dog to level out the hormones in his house that would be much appreciated.
