Three simple words were all it took to change their lives forever.

Losing a loved one is hard. Learning to survive in their absence? That’s even harder. For Gemma Michaels, life had become difficult following her brother’s death, but the one thing that kept her afloat was the one thing she knew she shouldn’t have desired – her best friend, Ben.

He’d made a promise to her brother – to protect her, no matter what. For Ben, that had meant that she was off limits. But then she slips and tells him the three words he’s been waiting to hear.

Love happens when you least expect it.

Excerpt:

“If you’re trying to charm my pants off of me, it isn’t going to work, Nate.”
At least, I hoped he wouldn’t succeed. Again.

On one hand, the last thing I needed was to repeat the same mistake. On the other hand? I was single, and I did have needs. Of course, Nate’s model looks certainly didn’t help to keep my mind from considering his earlier proposal.

And this is why you don’t drink around Nate, I told myself.

“Get your mind out of the gutter, Gem, geez,” he joked. I dropped my hands from his neck and shoved him gently in his chest before he grabbed my wrists, pulling me to where he stood. “I’m serious. You have convinced yourself my idiot cousin can do better than you. You seem to think that you can’t compete with the other girls, but it’s utter bullshit.”

“It’s not bullshit; it’s called accepting the reality of the situation,” I said.

“You’re so much more than those other girls, Gemma. I only wish you could see what I see,” he said. A sincere smile spread upon his lips, and he released his hold on my wrists. “Don’t let your fear keep you from trying. Sometimes the things that scare us the most are exactly what we need.”

Guest Post:

What were your goals and intentions in this book, and how well do you feel you achieved them?

I’ve written a lot of books over the years, however, none have been as personal as Collide. This book initially started off as an intended New Adult romantic comedy. Even more surprising? It was initially developed as a lone novel. Over time, though, my plans for Gemma and Ben’s story changed and the book evolved into a novella series that focused on hard-hitting issues such as drug addiction and homophobia. As someone in their late twenties, I wanted to write a story that featured characters I could relate to – young individuals that had stable jobs, but the rest of their lives in a state of disarray. This “Collide” was born.

Like with my other books, while I do tend to write a general outline ahead of writing, I also make it a point to allow my stories to become what they’re meant to become. Sometimes, this means straying from my initial goals. Other times? It means expanding the story beyond what you previously considered. “Collide” falls into the latter. When I first started writing this book, I was in a bad place. In fact, while Gemma’s experiences are fictional, my own experiences at that time played a huge part in developing her character. So, the grief she’s struggling to overcome? That’s something I was dealing with and needed to express somehow. Thankfully, those emotions only helped to expand her story and the book only became stronger because of it.

While I wanted to write a story that honestly reflected people my age, I never intended to tackle the likes of drug addiction and homophobia. The story inched that way on its own, and I’m actually thankful for that. So, although I didn’t achieve my original intentions of a light romance, I feel as though I achieved my goal in telling a realistic take for the New Adult audience.
