Looking for Dei
David A. Willson
Publication date: March 23rd 2018
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

Fifteen-year-old Nara Dall has never liked secrets. Yet it seems that her life has been filled with them, from the ugly scar on her back to the strange powers she possesses. Her mysterious father refuses to say anything about her origins, and soon, she and her best friend must attend the announcement ceremony, in which youths are tested for a magical gift.

A gifted youth has not been announced in the poor village of Dimmitt for decades. When Nara uncovers the reason, she uses her own powers to make things right. The decision sets her on a path of danger, discovery, and a search for the divine. In the process, she learns the truth about herself and uncovers the biggest secret of all: the power of broken people.

My Review:

Our young heroine Nara Dall was kidnapped from an orphanage at the age of two by a man who raised her as his own. A man that became the only father she ever knew; a man that loved her very much and would do anything to protect her and keep her safe. He knew that Nara had powers and that one day she would be very strong but he taught her to always hide her powers and never let anyone know her secret.

Bylo raised Nara in a small town called Dimmitt and each year they held a ceremony to test the youth for magical powers. There has been no one announced with magical powers in many, many years but will it be different this year? At the announcement ceremony magical powers are revealed and Nara her best friend Mykel and Bylo have to go in hiding.

On their journey they meet a woman, Anne who teaches Nara and Mykel how to use their powers and become stronger so they can fight the man that is looking for them among others. Who is this man and what reason does he have for wanting to kidnap Nara? What does he plan to do with her?

I loved the characters and world that they live in. I loved following along with them as they were taught what their magic was and how to use it. I love all things that have to do with magical elements like fire, earth, water and air. I loved learning how Nara’s magic worked especially her earth element.

I loved this magical journey that Looking for Dei sent us on with all the twist and turns. Looking for Dei is brilliantly written while reading it I could picture each and every scene playing out in my head like a movie. I would be reading and thinking that, oh yeah I know how this is going to turn out but then a twist was thrown in taking you in a completely different direction and leaving you with lots of mystery to fill the pages once again. This is what makes for a good read.

I would recommend Looking for Dei to anyone who loves going on magical journeys filled with magical mystery around every corner and filled with more twist than a roller coaster.
