Excerpt:

I believe that my mother saw me as an offensive predator. That depiction is also a product of natural, but highly convoluted, logic. Inside my childhood home, typically accepted roles tended to become wildly skewed from commonly accepted norms. Such a thing seems to follow, when the rules of engagement are based on upon illusion, rather than truth and honesty. I had a legitimate mother, who was an adult, but she was, in equal measure, an unpredictable and unmerciful tyrant and fiend. I thought I saw my mom enter my bedroom at night, but I always engaged with a monster, instead.

Reconciling this sinister conundrum installed a type of internal courtroom scene in my heart, mind and soul. I visit that court of inquisition quite regularly, and I have done so, throughout all remembered life. I stand trial for crimes relating to common actions and simple decisions. The charges I face are modest. I am accused of being less than I might have been. The verdict is, always, guilty. The sentence is humble. I don’t think very highly of myself. That courtroom is the second distinction which hails from childhood days with my alcoholic mother.

         

Nevertheless, I learned to defend myself inside my home. I developed a dependable set of tactical engagement routines. Most of the time, they are stored away like cleaned guns, quiet and harmless, but they are also ready for loading, and aiming, and firing when needed. Sam is attempting to discourage the practice of opening my arsenal. I actually love her for that, and quite fittingly, I feel the scorch of shame whenever I begin to jingle the keys to my heirloom gun cabinet.

Interview with RC Welch

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?

My cat of course!  His name is ‘Tio,’ but that moniker is a shortened version of his real name, ‘Ocotillo.’  He is a Maine Coon, named after a cactus plant.  He is beautiful, but also sharp and prickly. The tradesmen who visit my home from time to time, mistake him for a wild Bobcat, every time. He sits with me, in my chair, while I write. 

How many hours a day do you put into your writing?

At least four, but if my ideas are flowing, I can sit for much longer.

Do you read your book reviews? If yes, do they affect what you write in the future?

I read my reviews.  I consider the source, first, and as diligently as possible.  They may affect my presentation style, but not my subject.

Do you leave hidden messages in your books that only a few people will find?

Absolutely, I have always looked more deeply into my readings than most people, and for people like me, I like to think that readers of my words will be rewarded for their curiosity and introspection.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Lucky Chance?

My primary characters are a newly married couple.  Jack and Samantha Weatherlow are their names.  Jack and Sam for short.  Both individuals have storied pasts, which affect their present relationship in many ways.  Both and together they are living in an environment that is unfamiliar and displaced from their home origins.  Samantha was born in America, but raised in France, by adoptive parents.  She brings French culture to an American setting. Jack was born and raised in the state of Georgia, but is living in Kansas as a result of both conscious and subconscious elements of life.  Jack brings a sense of ‘loss’ to an unexpectedly, ‘found’ relationship.  They have met and they have married.  Both bring their past lives to this new pairing and both negotiate those past influences within the emerging presence of love.

Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?

I acquired my latest idea while lying on the floor of my yoga studio, during a relaxation posture.  That sort of thing happens to me all the time. I will write another love story, but one that is set within an environment that involves political intrigue and danger.  Once again, the underlying theme will follow along the pattern of my first book, Lucky Chance. That theme is a love affair affected and tested within the highly unexpected events, which life tends to present.  This time, the stakes will be far higher.  Will my love affair endure? Will my couple survive?

Do you allow yourself a certain number of hours to write or do you write as long as the words come?

I do attempt to maintain a regiment of discipline, where I write for a designated number of hours.  I am flexible, of course, but I like the sense of organization and purpose that prevails from my discipline practice.

Do you have a certain number of words or pages you write per day?

I often refer to a reading from the letters of Flannery O’Connor.  In one letter, she wrote, and I am paraphrasing from memory… Well, I’ve written two pages, with which I am quite happy.  I think I am finished for today.

That recollection serves as my baseline for production.

What inspires you to write?

I am not certain of the source of my desire to write, but I feel it, and if I let it flow freely, I can always write, anytime and anywhere.

Would you rather

Read fiction or non-fiction?

I like fiction, but I have become a history buff over time.  Recently, I read a three volume academic compendium about the Crusades.  Quite frankly, I found the stories within that history extraordinarily compelling.

Read series or stand-alone?

Series, I never want to surrender characters that I love.

Read Science fiction or horror?

Science Fiction

Read Stephen King or Dean Koontz

Not my favorites, but both have had wonderful stories to tell.

Read the book or watch the movie?

Few movies are better than the book, but sometimes I need to see the pictures.  Hollywood is more amazing than not on many occasions.

Read an ebook or paperback?

I prefer real paper, every time.
