Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in How To Speak Boy?
Quinn and Grayson are similar in
a lot of ways, which of course, is why it takes them a while to realize they’re
perfect for each other. They’re competitive, yet insecure at the same time.
They don’t back down from confrontation, and they’re hard workers. Grayson
keeps his cool better than Quinn, who can sometimes see things more black and
white than Grayson.
Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have
planned for the future?
I wish I could! I can’t really
say much about it. What I can say is that I’m working on another YA romance and
I hope I get to share it with readers one day soon!
How long would
you say it takes you to write a book?
Totally depends on the book! My
first book took about ten months to write, then about four months to edit. My second
book took about three months to write, and two months to edit. I’m one of those
people that works better when I have a deadline.
What
is your favorite childhood book?
I
loved the Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C. Wrede. The first book is called
Dealing with Dragons, and I remember re-reading that series so many times. I
still love it!
If you
could spend the day with one of the characters from How To Speak Boy who would
it be? Please tell us why you chose this particular character, where you would
go and what you would do.
I’d
like to hang out with Quinn. She’s not all that social, so we’d probably hang
out at her house listening to music, and I’d be down for that. Personally, I’m
pretty introverted most of the time too.
What
was the hardest scene from How To Speak Boy to write?
Carter was a challenging
character for me to write. So, his scenes were all a bit tricky. If I say too
much more, I’ll start giving away spoilers and I don’t want to do that. Suffice
to say, his actions and internal feelings were complicated and I had to think a
lot about how he’d respond to things, especially near the end.
What
made you want to become a writer?
Honestly,
it’s something I’ve always wanted to do as long as I could remember. My parents
and teachers were all really supportive of my writing from a young age, which
helped me feel like this was something I should pursue.
