Excerpt from Linda Barrett’s “Lianne”

When I opened the door of the Raden, the temple of the good luck goddess, Bree-Ahm, my nose picked up the smell of some freaky oil. It gave off this odor of sweet, musty flowers. It started me coughing and gagging for air in this stone dive. My canine-human mutant nose is ten times stronger than a regular person’s. That’s why I became a private investigator.

Watch out for the glass!” the girl shouted, her soft, sweet voice echoing in the Raden’s wide stone halls.

I looked down to see millions of glass shards glittering in front of me. I drew one foot back because I had flip flops on.

As I looked up at this crazy place, my eyes scanned everything. Stone statues carved in the columns along the walls surrounded the altar. Someone must have spent years on this place of worship. Wooden benches, stone statues, and even gold went into the making of this place. Even the incense smelled ritzy.

The guards in their black leather tunics reminded me of some 1980s sci-fi movie with Mel Gibson in it. They bared their arms and legs and wore metal spikes on their breast plates. I smelled sweat and cigarette smoke on their bodies. The girl guard towered over me. She looked too cute to be working with these moonlighting professional wrestlers.

She aimed a spear at me, her eyes doing the same thing.
