Interview with Abbie Roads

What made you want to become a writer?

Lol… I’m going to answer your question with a question.

How many times have you read a book and gotten frustrated at the author for making something happen that you didn’t want to happen?

Now on to my answer…

Reading made me want to be a writer. I’ve been an avid reader since the second grade. So… Starting way back then, I began getting frustrated with authors for not writing the story exactly how my little kid self wanted it to be written. I have a huge romantic streak and I often wanted more romance! Yes. Even in the second grade, I had romantic notions!

They say, “Write the book you want to read.” So that’s what I have done. Written books with danger, edge-of-your-seat action, and a melt-your-heart romance!

What inspired you to write Capturing Fate?

Those pesky characters.

Dolan and Daughter demanded I write their story. Sometimes my characters get ornery and won’t cooperate with my wishes. What else can I do, but comply when they have a story they want the world to read?

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Capturing Fate?

Dolan Watts: The police found Dolan as a child, dehydrated and covered in blood. He had no memory of what came before. He spent his childhood in the system. It wasn’t an easy living in group homes and foster care, but he got through it with the help of his imaginary friend, Snake. It was him and Snake against the world. He put himself through college on scholarships and sweat. When we meet Dolan when he’s working undercover for the FBI posing as a prison guard.

Dolan’s childhood taught him to be self-reliant, which is a good thing until it comes to working on a team. And the FBI is all about teamwork. He’s constantly getting himself into trouble because he follows his own rules and lives by his own code of conduct. On the verge of losing his job, his supervisor forces him into therapy.

Daughter Dawson: Daughter was adopted as a baby. The only non-negotiable condition of her adoption was that she keep the name Daughter. Her parents complied, and they gave her a childhood full of wonder and delight. Everything about her life was the opposite of Dolan’s. She went to school to become a psychologist and has started her own practice.

But the past is never really gone, and she discovers a terrible secret about the identity of her biological father. A secret has the potential to destroy the lives of everyone around her, especially when she meets her newest client, Dolan.

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

I love J.R. Ward. Her Black Dagger Brotherhood Series will always be a favorite. I’ve read many of the books multiple times.

When I was just starting to write romance back in 2010, authors kept giving the advice that you should only write from the female point-of-view. But J.R. Ward’s BDB series gave me permission to write in the male point of view, too. And thank god it did because my guys are always easier for me to write than my women!

Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?

Right now, I’m working on a book tentatively titled Minds of Madness. It’s about a female true crime podcaster who is looking into the cold case of a paperboy who had gone missing twenty years ago. The more she looks into it, the more she discovers the case is far from cold and there are people in positions of power who don’t want her snooping around.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

Hmm… I don’t want to say because I’m afraid I’ll ruin a big plot twist! The only hint I’ll give is that there are cookies and superheroes involved!

And now I’m craving cookies.

Author Bio:

Seven Things about Abbie Roads:
1. She loves Snicker Parfaits. Gotta start with what's most important, right?
2. She writes dark emotional books featuring damaged characters, but always gives her hero and heroine a happy ending... after torturing them for three hundred pages.
3. By day she's a mental health counselor known for her blunt, honest style of therapy. At night she burns up the keyboard. Well... Burn might be too strong a word. She at least sits with her hands poised over the keyboard, waiting for inspiration to strike. And when it does--the keyboard might get a little warm.
4. She can't stand it when people drive slowly in the passing lane. Just saying. That's major annoying. Right?
5. She loves taking pictures of things she thinks are pretty.
6. She lives in Marion, Ohio with her favorite fellow and two fur babies.
7. Being a published author is a dream come true for her.
