Interview with Author, Kristen L. Jackson

How did you become involved with the subject or theme of your book?

This series is a sci-fi/fantasy, magical, dimension travel tale. In the first book, Chase Walker discovers a watch that can help him travel the twelve dimensions. The storyline was inspired by my dad, who always wore a watch. When he passed away a few years back, it was my dad’s love of time, watches, and our shared love of science fiction that inspired me to begin writing the Keeper of the Watch series.

What were your goals and intentions in this book, and how well do you feel you achieved them?

My goal in writing AND TIME STOPPED (Book Three in the Keeper of the Watch Series) was to open up a dialogue about two very important issues that most teens face to some degree every day: teen bullying, and teen suicide. Awareness is the first step in prevention, and if I can open even a tiny window on these topics and get people talking, then I feel I have achieved my goal.

My intentions during the writing process were to weave in an underlying feeling of hope through the storyline despite the heaviness of the issues. I want to send a message to my readers. Don’t lose hope.

What was the hardest part of writing this book?

There were two factors that made the entire book a hard one to write. First, the storyline was very emotional for me, making it a very difficult story to write. The realization that teen bullying and teen suicide happen more often than I realized rattled me, and just made me want to write this story even more.

The second most difficult part of writing this book was that I was writing it in 2020, right at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. It was hard to find inspiration at times.

This book is a true work from the heart!

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

I enjoyed reconnecting with my characters. They have become like old friends to me, and I’m always happy to re-enter their lives when I start writing another book in the series.

Were there alternate endings you considered?

No, not an alternate ending. But I did consider making one of the scenes in the book less tragic. When I was writing; however, it seemed inevitable for the storyline to go in that direction.

Can you share some stories about people you met while researching this book?

What really moved me was not people I met, but rather statistics and information about teen suicide in our country. It saddens me that so many of our youth feel so lost they think there is no other way out. My hope in writing this book is that it will open up a dialogue about this serious and heartbreaking issue with the teens, (and adults!), that read my series.

What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

I love reading romance, science fiction, fantasy, young adult, & mystery novels. As long as it captures my interest, I’m willing to read it!
