Boy saves girl stuck on a disastrous hike. What could go wrong? So. Much.

Just Another Meet Cute is the joyful and funny story about what happens when you realize you’re dating the wrong twin.

When seventeen-year-old Nina Riley gets saved by a super cute Knight-in-Faded-Khakis just as she lands in an embarrassingly ‘ahem’ sticky situation during the most disastrous hike known to man, she wasn’t exactly looking for a meet cute. She really just needed some peace and quiet from her complicated family. Unfortunately, he disappears before she can properly thank him or get his number. All she has is his name (Ian Nguyen) and a navy jacket with a dog keychain, a gym card, and laundromat receipt. But a meet cute is a meet cute. And armed with years of watching Veronica Mars and a techy cousin, it should be simple enough for Nina to find the boy of her dreams, right? But when she finally tracks him down, he’s different than she thought ―right down to his name. Ryan is just as cute as she remembers, but the chemistry isn’t there like it was before. After a few dates, she meets Ryan’s family: his sweet grandma, his enthusiastic sisters, and his twin brother ――Ian.

Interview with Jenn P. Nguyen

What is your favorite part of the book?

My favorite part of JUST ANOTHER MEET CUTE are the conversations between my characters. I love to write dialogue. Whether it’s bickering or something heartfelt. I always read it out loud to myself just to make sure it sounds natural and flows. This is also the reason why I’ve started writing at home rather in public. Once at Barnes and Noble, I read an entire conversation under my breath (facial expressions included) without realizing the person sitting in front of me was watching. I’m sure I looked like a crazy person!

Does your book have a lesson? Moral?

I don’t think my book has a specific moral or lesson, but Nina, the main character, learns to not make assumptions about people. Things may happen for different reasons. Sometimes, instead of imagining the worst, all you have to do is have the courage to ask the right question.

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

Most of the characters are based off of my imagination, but they do have some characteristics and quirks from the people around me. Something that people who know me very well will definitely recognize. And I’m sure they’ll have a lot to say to me about it. It could be something small, like the way they talk or what they like to eat.

Although, the grandma in JUST ANOTHER MEET CUTE is actually a LOT like my own grandma. From her weekly Sunday pho, to the clothes she wears. She’s the true matriarch of the family.

Of all the characters you have created, which is your favorite and why?

My favorite character would have to be Nina’s cousin Linh. She’s confidant, witty, and isn’t afraid to speak her mind. This was definitely the opposite of how I was as a teenager. I was quieter and more of a follower. And I definitely wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life. Linh is who I was in my head, but was afraid to be in real life. It doesn’t hurt to be an amazing cook like her either!

What character in your book are you least likely to get along with?

Ironically, I think I would be least likely to get along with Nina’s Aunt Sarah. Like Linh, she’s very outspoken to the point where she can be a bit overbearing. But as the family’s mother hen, she means well and only wants the family to be happy. Even if her version of happy isn’t what everyone else’s is. I don’t like confrontations at all so I feel like she would just walk all over me.

What would you say to your main character?

I would say thank you for letting me tell your story. I started writing JUST ANOTHER MEET CUTE during covid when I wasn’t able to see my own family much and this book helped me miss them a little less. Writing the family scenes with everyone was difficult and chaotic, but that’s how it felt like when my family got together. It’s loud and crowded and you’re just trying to find your place. But it’s comforting to know you always have people there. I suppose you can say that this book was a love letter to my family.

Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?

I would love to have connections with each of my books, but honestly, that’s my publisher’s call. As of now, all my books are standalones, but I do have ideas for the rest of the characters in the book and what happens to them next. It’s funny, but Nina’s character from JUST ANOTHER MEET CUTE was originally inspired by a character who was mentioned in my first book. We never actually meet her and I ended up changing her name and little details, but essentially her backstory is the same.
