Book Description:
The high school play is in two months and senior Wren Barlow just became director. Wren still isn't over the fact that she got stiffed as a stagehand instead of the lead role that she totally deserved. Now she is in charge of rehearsals, costumes, navigating around cast member hookups and managing the real life drama at home.
The principal counts on her to succeed because tickets have been sold and the money has been spent. But when he drops a gorgeous bad boy on her and wants him to help the play for extra credit, she falls hard for someone she knows she can't date.
With everything spinning out of control, the mysterious and secretive detention king named Derek has a few tricks up his sleeve and wants to help-too bad Wren is scared to give him a chance to prove himself
Author Interview:
What inspired you to write Understudy?
I was inspired by the fun I had in my own high school theater arts class. I knew writing a book about teens trying to put on a school play would be a blast, and it was.
When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?
I've been a massive reader since I was a child so somewhere around my high school years I turned my love for reading into a love of wanting to write my own stories. I only wish I would have started writing sooner!
What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?
I was five and I was reading a book aloud to my mother. I remember thinking I needed to say 'period' at the end of every sentence so she knew what I was reading to her. After a few pages, and some laughing at me, she told me that wasn't necessary.
What genre of books do you enjoy reading?
I'm a YA junkie for sure. I also like NA books that aren't too steamy and chick lit books that have interesting MCs.
What is your favorite book?
That's almost impossibly hard to answer so I'll go with the Harry Potter series.
You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?
Sarah Dessen because she inspired me to be the writer I am today. She's followed closely by R. L. Stine whose Fear Street books kept me reading throughout middle school.
If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?
I'd like to travel a few generations back and peek in on my ancestors to see what they did and how they lived.
When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?
The actual writing is always easy and fun. The hardest part of writing for me is simply finding the time to do so around having a full time job and a kid/puppy/husband to care for.
Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?
I have a puppy that isn't a puppy anymore and a cat who loves sleeping on my laptop and then glaring at me when I make her move so I can write.
What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?
I love avocados and fried pickles.
Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?
My biggest advice for aspiring authors is to read often and widely in both the genres you want to write and in other genres. Learning proper grammar is another big thing but I feel that reading enough books would eventually teach you that as well. Also, never give up!
