Blog Tour: Buddy Carruthers, Wide Receiver (First & Ten #2) By Jean C. Joachim @JeanJoachim @GHBTours #Giveaway

Buddy Carruthers, Wide Receiver
First & Ten #2
By- Jean C. Joachim
Genre- Sports Romance

Known for his record-breaking stats and womanizing ways, wide receiver, Buddy Carruthers, would give it all up for one chance to win the only woman he ever wanted, Emmy Meacham. Hard-won games, and traveling half the season kept Buddy from pursuing his secret passion. Even if he managed to corner her for a moment, would she still care?

Now a rock star known as Emerald, Emmy lived her life on the road with no time for love. In her dreams, she longed to turn back the clock and spend another night with Buddy. But lies and deceit had kept them apart for five years. Would a chance meeting wash away those years or cause old wounds to resurface? Could two lives traveling in opposite directions make room for love or would they continue to spin, out of sync, and always alone?

Top 3 Pet Peeves

1)    Jealousy. Jealousy is a wasted emotion. All it does is create anger and hatred, tearing down friendships and family relationships. I wish people could put aside jealousy, be happy for other people’s successes and focus on their own lives and how to achieve their own goals.
2)    People who are late. By their lateness they communicate their lack of respect for other people’s time. Latecomers expect the world to wait for them. That’s pretty nervy. I strive to be early or at least on time. It helps keep me sane and makes my friends and family happy.
3)    The lack of basic human respect. People who do not thank others who help them, do not respect other people’s space, or other people’s life choices. E. M. Forster wrote a great essay on tolerance. He said that you don’t have to like how another person lives, all you have to do is tolerate it. Yes, respect the rights of others to live differently than  you do.
Who do you consider the most swoon-worthy man in the
literary world? How about on tv/in the movies?

It’s hard for me to think of anyone other than Hugh Jackman.
I recently saw him in a play on a small stage Off-Broadway. I wasn’t too far away from him and I must say, even with all his clothes on, he is impressive, gorgeous and drool-worthy.

 Top 5 Favorite Things

1)    My children
2)    Pug dogs, especially my Homer
3)    Black Licorice
4)    Sunny summer days in the mountains
5)    Fresh salty air at the beach

What are your thoughts on book covers- in your opinion do they make or break a book?

I do think book covers can make or break a book. The cover
is the first thing a reader sees. If it isn’t intriguing in some way, then the reader will move on, probably without even reading the blurb. I love pretty, attractive covers and am privileged to have mine designed by the incomparable Dawne Dominique.
What’s the last song you listened to?

I Can’t Smile Without You.  It became the inspiration for the final in the book I’m working on now, third in the First & Ten series called, Pete Sebastian, Coach. It gave me the ending. Just as I listened to the song on my computer, i envisioned the scene. And it was perfect! Love that song!

How do you come up with character names?  How do you come up with novel titles?

I love unusual character names. Sometimes a character’s name just pops into my head and is perfect, like Danny Maine in Now and Forever 2, The Book of Danny and Tunney Nichols in The Renovated Heart. Other times I have to hunt for just the right name. I use phone directories, lists of baby names and sometimes I get inspiration from my environment. I like to use last names as first names, hence Penn Roberts, hero of To Love or Not to Love.

In His Leading Lady, Penny’s last name came from me watching a nuthatch hop up the tree in front of my deck. I thought of hatch, then hatcher, then thatcher. You never know where an idea is going to come from.

Titles are harder, but still fun. I like the title to have relevance to the story in some way. To me, that’s important. I’m always trying to get titles that aren’t already books on Amazon. Sometimes you can’t help it, like Rescue My Heart. It was such a perfect title, I couldn’t think of a substitute. Song titles are great inspiration. And since a title can’t be copyrighted, you have plenty to choose from. However other authors have thought of the same thing, so often you’ll find someone else has had your brainstorm first.

In my current series, since it’s football, I decided just to use the hero’s name and

position as the title. It makes the title unique and also easier for the reader to remember if she’s read that book in the series. I didn’t think plays on football terminology would hold up for this series. So far it’s worked. When the title is the right one, you know it, instinctively.
I see more and more people getting into self-publishing, figuring they have the next 50 Shades of Grey and when they discover they don’t, they give up. Being a successful author means being in it for the long haul. There are few overnight successes in this business. True writers are driven to write. It’s not a choice, it’s an addiction, which is my reality. If this didn’t scare you off, then welcome to the club. Now, start writing!

Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Yes, get addicted  to writing and be prepared for a challenging career. Being an author is a lot of hard work. Just being a storyteller, which I am by nature, isn’t enough. You
have to learn the craft, master head-hopping, pacing, plot, character development, and then the hardest one of all --language. It’s work, plain and simple.

Writing is a lonely profession. You do it  by yourself. You have to be able to take criticism, from your editor, your publisher and your readers. It hurts. Sometimes it hurts a lot.
After you’ve jumped the hurdle of finding a publisher, you have to learn how to market. No matter who publishes you --marketing is going to be your responsibility. If you’re not savvy about marketing, you can learn.

 This or That-

*Paranormal or Dystopian?  Paranormal

*Winchesters or Salvatores? Winchesters

*Morning or Night? Morning

*Vanilla or Chocolate? Vanilla

*Summer or Winter? Summer

I'm guilty of never being on time, not on purpose, I try sooo hard but I feel like I'm 5 minutes late to life. Hell, I was late to my own wedding reception. I know...I suck.
