Virtual Tour + #Giveaway: Blind Chess by Cristelle Comby @Cristelle @GoddessFish
Blind Chess
by Cristelle Comby
GENRE: Mystery & Detectives
BLURB:
It
is supposed to be Neve and Egan. Two partners, a team. What happens when a
member of this team of Private Investigators is shot, prognosis unknown?
As Alexandra Neve
lays comatose and defenceless, Ashford Egan must take on their enemy alone, and
find the cagiest criminal Scotland Yard has seen in decades. Determined to
succeed, Egan will stop at nothing. He’ll hit on married women, plant bugs,
hire hitmen. And he’ll do it all blind, which makes things ten times as
difficult.
Double-crossed by
friends, convinced there is corruption in those sworn to uphold the law, Egan
is forced to form unlikely alliances as he moves forward in a game that
requires skills, nerves of steel, and a willingness to play against all odds.

EXCERPT:
The journey to the Lantesks’ home gives
me time to weigh my options. There are two ways to play this: continue to
pretend to be Mr. Bono, the nice accountant, and flirt some information out of
Mrs Lantesk; or use the weapon in my pocket and approach the situation in a
considerably less charming manner.
I entertain the possibilities of
option one while I walk up the main street, but decide on option two as I turn
into the Lantesks’ drive. I don’t have time to be gentle anymore; I can’t
afford it.
I tighten my grip on the weapon,
straighten my back and force a resolve I don’t feel onto my face.
Car doors are being slammed in the
distance as the first commuters start their daily routines. The hour is still
early though, and the chances I’ve been seen are slim. The wind keeps up its
assault as I take the last steps towards the house, gun in hand, safety catch
on.
I smile as I think of DI Langford.
He’d have a fit if he could see me. So far, I am only a thief on the run, but I
am about to add a few more charges to my rap sheet. ‘Eyes on the prize,’ I
remind myself as I reach for the doorbell.
My finger is inches away from it
when I hear the gravel screech behind me. Someone is walking up to me. No, I
mentally correct myself instants later—several individuals. I count at least
two pairs of feet.
This isn’t good. I turn around,
extend my weapon, finger on the trigger, as I do my best to guess where to aim.
The weapon is kicked out of my hand
in a matter of seconds. I can’t even understand how. All I know is that my
fingers hurt, my wrist feels like it is broken, and the weapon has tumbled to
the gravel at least a foot away on my right.
An instant later, someone’s fist
hits me in the shoulder. It sends me tumbling backwards and I hit the Lantesks’
house wall violently. My cane flies out of my hand and I feel some of the wall
plaster come loose upon impact. It crumbles to dust under my fingers as I try
to get back up on my feet.
Author Interview:
When or at
what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?
As far as I can remember, I’ve always loved
writing and I’ve always been kinda good at it. Every time we had to write
essays, or whatever else at school... I aced it. Fiction writing is, by far,
what I like best. I love creating characters, and then seeing them evolve and
interact with each other. This is
truly what drives me to write.
What is the
earliest age you remember reading your first book?
I had a few books as a child, but the titles now escape me. The only one I
can recall from my early, early childhood is ‘The Little Red Hen’; I had it on
a cassette tape. I played it so many times, I’m sure my mum still remembers the
story and the oh-so-merry-and-jolly-it-gets-annoying-fast music that goes with
it.
What genre
of books do you enjoy reading?
I’m really into Urban Fantasy or Heroic Fantasy, and I like to read books
which are part of a series. It’s great to see the characters grow and evolve
throughout the volumes.
What is your
favorite book?
It’s impossible to choose one. But here’s my favourite pick for 2015:
‘Departure’, by A.G. Riddle. I found it by accident, but loved it a lot. It
starts off as a simple plane crash story, and does a one-eighty in the middle
and becomes 100% science-fiction. It’s cleverly crafted, really.
You know I
think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?
Jim Butcher, the man behind the Harry Dresden series. I just love his
style.
If you could
travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and
why?
Can’t I go forward? Why can’t I go forward? Ok, fine then... Jerusalem , First Century
AD. As an atheist, I’d love to know if I
was right.
When writing
a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?
Once the outlining is done, the writing comes very easily, because the road
is already mapped out.
Do you have
any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?
Not at the moment, but I had a cat growing up. We lived in a house, back
then so it was easy to manage, and the cat could go out. I couldn’t imagine
having a cat now that I live in a tiny apartment.
What is your
"to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?
Chocolate. Anything that has to do with chocolate. I’m Swiss, so it’s no
surprise that I love the stuff.
Do you have
any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?
Never give up. It’s a hard job, but you can do it. No matter what people
say, I promise there is someone, somewhere who will like what you wrote.

(Do you have something against footlongs? Too bad. Two teenagers can only handle so much caviar and lobster.)
What I remember most about that trip, and what Shannon reminds me of every moment I look at her, was our trip to the Museum of Modern Art. Mom insisted we go, and Andrew and I rolled our eyes like sets of dice at a craps table.
And then.
And then I got it, right there in front of a Vincent van Gogh masterpiece. In art history class we’d covered this painting in detail. We were taught the biography of Van Gogh, how he came to create the series of paintings, his motivation, and his flaws. We’d dissected the meaning so thoroughly that I felt like I could recreate the art by automation, our elite prep-school instruction clinical and impeccable.
Standing in front of the painting, a few feet away, with my eyes trailing the curve of brush strokes, my mind taking in the nuance of color, my senses dazzled by the sheer essence of the whole, I halted. Froze. Was completely in the painting’s spell.
You can study something in the abstract. Know it’s real somewhere out there in the world, and understand intellectually that what you read in a book or what you’re told by someone else is true.
You have to stand in front of it and have it stare back at you, though, to really know it.
That’s how I feel when I look at Shannon. Every single time my eyes find her. Shannon’s smile is warm and sweet, yet better every time she flashes it at me. Her honey-colored hair shines in the sunlight but looks richer when it’s tangled, in bed, highlighted by the moon and messed by me. Those warm eyes see only me when we’re together. That luscious body craves my touch. My hands. My…all of it.
When I’m with her, the world is more nuanced. Deeper. Authentic. Real.
She’s a work of art, one of a kind. And one I get to hold next to my body, tuck away in my heart, and…grow old with.
I have planned the perfect proposal. No footlongs and sauerkraut, unfortunately, but plenty of lobster, caviar, champagne and—her favorite—tiramisu. (What is it with women and tiramisu? It’s cream, cheese, sugar, cake and rum, not some magic potion that generates mouth orgasms. My Y chromosome scratches its head in confusion, but hey, if it’s her favorite…I give my woman what she wants.)
Dad gave me Mom’s engagement ring, platinum and diamonds galore, a monstrosity he’d bought for her nearly four decades ago as his business took off. The ring is designed to impress. I doubt Shannon would care if I slid a giant hard-candy ring on her finger instead of a three-carat diamond.
And, frankly, I don’t care, either. But the thought of my Shannon sharing such an important part of my mother’s life makes my chest swell. Only Shannon—and my mom—can do that. Only love can do that.
Plus, Marie will pass out when she sets eyes on that rock, and that will give us two minutes of blessed silence. That woman talks more than Kim Kardashian flashes her naked ass on the internet.
“It’s not as if your brothers are planning to tie themselves down to one woman any time soon, if ever,” Dad had said when he gave it to me. He’s about as sentimental as a pet rock. After having it resized to fit my future fiancée, it was ready to rest on yet another McCormick woman’s finger.
It was going to be calculatedly perfect, down to the color of the tablecloth and the freshness of the roses.
And it was perfect.
Until Shannon swallowed the ring.

EXCERPT:
Shannon has no idea how many layers of beauty she has. And that’s exactly why she’s so exquisite.
When I was sixteen, the year before my mother died, Mom took me and my little brother, Andrew, to New York City for a long weekend. Pulled us out of school over the objections of the headmaster at our academy. Mom didn’t care. We spent three nights at the Waldorf Astoria, skated at Rockefeller Center, had the best seats at the top Broadway musicals, and dined on the finest footlongs you could get for $3. Loaded with mustard and sauerkraut, plus a cream soda or two.(Do you have something against footlongs? Too bad. Two teenagers can only handle so much caviar and lobster.)

Blog Tour + Review + #Giveaway: Poison (Wind Dancer #1) by Lan Chan @WriteObsession @XpressoReads @XpressoTours #XpressoBookTours
Poison by
Lan Chan
(Wind Dancer #1)
Publication date: September 1st 2015
Genres: Dystopia, Young Adult
Publication date: September 1st 2015
Genres: Dystopia, Young Adult
Synopsis:
Since the night her mother was murdered, sixteen-year-old
Rory Gray has known one truth: There are no good Seeders.
In post-apocalyptic Australia, the scientists known as
Seeders have built a Citadel surrounded by food-producing regions and populated
with refugees from the wars and famine. To maintain their control, the Seeders
poisoned the land and outlawed the saving of seeds.
It’s been six years since Rory graced the Seeders’ circus
stage as the Wind Dancer and still the scars on her body haven’t healed. Even
worse are the scars on her heart, left by a Seeder boy who promised to protect
her.
Now the Seeders are withholding supplies from Rory’s
region for perceived disobedience. Utilising the Wanderer knowledge she
received from her mother, Rory must journey to the Citadel through
uninhabitable terrain to plead for mercy.
However, the Citadel isn’t as Rory remembered. The chief
plant geneticist is dying and rumours fly that the store of viable seed is
dwindling. The Seeders are desperate to find a seed bank they believe Rory can
locate, and they will stop at nothing to get it.
To defy the Seeders means death. But Rory has been close
to death before–this time she’s learned the value of poison.
Recommended for fans of The Hunger Games, Divergent,
strong protagonists, minority characters, circuses and nature!

My Review:
I received a free copy of the book from the author
for my honest opinion.
If you like reading books in this genre or if you just
love a good story then this is the book for you. It will take you on a very
long journey that you can never get enough of. It will swallow you up from beginning
to ending. You will be so immersed that you will not know what has taken a hold
of you. It will hold you prisoner the beginning to the end and then keep you
wanting more.
Rory a sixteen year old girl lives in one of the villages
outside the walls of the Citadel. Her and her family once lived inside the
walls until her mother was murder by the Seeders. The Seeders control the
country and everyone in it. Rory is half Seeder and half Wonderer. She was once
a part of the circus at the Citadel and one of the best. She was known as the
Wind Dance and she was very good at what she did.
But after her mother’s death Rory and her family was sent
to live in a faraway land. Rory and the people in her village were running out
of food. They are not allowed to have seeds to grow their own food. It is
against the law to for Rory and her family and friends to have seeds if they
are caught then they are punished.
The Seeders provide the people in the villages outside of
the walls of the Citadel. But for some reason unknown to Rory and all of the
other people the Seeders have stopped providing them with the supplies they
need to survive. Of course they don’t provide them with everything they need.
Rory knows how to hunt food for her own people. Rory has been going into the
forest for a long time now hunting for food for her and her family. Rory has her own set of knives that she wears
at her waist most of the time. She feels naked without them.
When her father becomes ill with the sickness that is
going around; he sends her to the Citadel to see an old friend of his. He hopes
that his friend can help him survive well that is if Rory can get there and
back in time. It is a long way and she has to go through the forest where there
are mutated animals and plant life not to mention the reapers. The reapers are
like these real bad people that will take and use you maybe for their slave or
even for food. But Rory knows what is in the forest and is not afraid to go on
a walkabout in a post-apocalyptic Australia. She knows how to hide from the mutated
animals and the reapers besides all that she has her knives with her.
Rory sets out all on her own but soon finds out that her
little brother is hot on her trail. When she catches him at first she doesn’t
know what to do with him. Send him back or take him back home herself. She is
afraid to let him wonder around in the forest alone besides he can talk real
fast and soon has her convinced that she would be better off to let him tag
long against her better judgement.
Rory has a very hard and exciting journey on her way to
the Citadel. She runs into to more people which she is not too keen on at
first. She is more of a loner. But she soon finds out that she needs people
more that she thought. She comes to care about these people very much and does
what she can to keep them safe.
She finally reaches the Citadel and to her surprise she
is not sent away like she thought she might be. She is allowed to stay but she
soon learns why they don’t send her way. They want her join their circus again
after all these years but that is not all. The Seeders are running out of seeds
and need Rory to help them find more. They think that Rory knows where a bank
of seeds are. They think that her mother told her where they were. But Rory has
no idea about any seeds. But she doesn’t tell them this because as long as they
think she knows and that she is withholding this info from them then it could
be the only thing that is keeping her alive at the moment.
They think her mother told her about the bank of seeds
long ago before she was murdered. But this is not the case she never told her
anything about any seeds. She use to tell her stories at night before bedtime
but they were just fairy tells right? Well now we come down to the bad part
where she finds out what her choices are. In Rory’s world there are always
choices but of course they are not freedom of choices. When Rory doesn’t tell
them what they want to know they finally give her ultimatums. Can Rory save her
family and friends or can she save everyone? What will she do? Will she tell
them what they want to know?
In my standard author interview questions one of the
questions is if you could go back in time to any place of your choice where
would you go and why. Well that question actually originated from me wanting to
visit Australia. I use to ask people and still do sometimes if you could visit
any place on earth where would go and why? I have wanted to visit Australia for
a very long time now. But alas that is one dream that I know will never come
true. So when I read that Poison was set in Australia and I also love dystopian
and post-apocalyptic books I just had to read it and I was not disappointed in
no way. I loved every minute of it and can’t wait for the book in the series. I
can’t wait to find out what happens to Rory and all of her new friends and her
world.

A Beauty Dark and Deadly
Heather C. Myers
Genres: New Adult, Romance
“I’m here to answer the ad,” she said, mentally scolding herself for how small her voice sounded. Emmy was usually more forthcoming; she wasn’t used to being intimidated by anybody.
However, Emmy was beginning to expect that Jason Marshall was a different man entirely. He had begun to develop a well-known reputation as an esteemed author after he published his first book The man was talented, and because of that, he started making money. As always, however, night did accompany day. Jason began holing up in his home office, plagued with deadlines, appearances, and writer’s block. The papers interpreted his isolation as a strain on his marriage and even managed to uncover his wife’s secret, seven-month affair. Jason had to discover it in the papers. Next thing he knew, his wife and her lover ended up dead in a Motel 6 and he was being accused of committing the act. Two years later and after clearing his name, he took residence in his old cabin in Lake Tahoe. He was also a rapper, something Emmy was much less familiar with, publishing three platinum albums on top of his writing career. He did not tour, and performed only rarely. From what she knew of his music career – which wasn’t much to begin with – he was an amazing rapper.
He smiled at her, causing Emmy to look away. The sun seemed to shine differently when he smiled.
“You seem to be the only one to do so,” he told her in a soft-spoken voice. Emmy had seen Jason being interviewed on television a few months back, and she found it rather baffling that the man had a voice that sounded articulate and mumbled at the same time. It was a low tenor and gave her chills; she hoped it was because she was intimidated by him.
“I guess that means that you’re hired,” he continued, opening the door wider – a silent invitation to come in.
She hesitated, and glanced at her two suitcases idly on the cement porch on either side of her. It had been rather presumptuous of her to assume that she would get this job, but she highly doubted that anyone else would be applying, and upon seeing his surprised look when he first saw her, she assumed that he felt the same way.
As Emmy stepped over the threshold that would mark the beginning of the end for her, she began to reflect on why she had decided to take the cleared murderer up on his job offer. Her grandfather was a wounded war veteran who barely managed to make ends meet with merely his disability check. He was the only thing Emmy had in the world and she loved him more than anything. She was currently a senior in college, about to graduate, but instead of finishing at the moment, she saw this opportunity to help him out and decided to take it. This, of course, was against her grandfather’s strictest wishes. It broke her heart that she had to leave him, but the pay was good, and they needed it.
“Well, I assume you want the tour then,” he said, glancing at the ground as he scratched the back of his neck.
“Actually, could you just show me to my room?” she asked. Even Emmy could admit that she sounded rather forceful and she quickly looked away to avoid that penetrating stare of his.
Jason paused for a beat as he stared at her intensely, before he nodded once. This caused his hair to fall in his face and his hand reached up, his long fingers pushing the locks out of his face; a chain of events that Emmy expected to happen quite often.
“Uh… yeah,” he said, and then began to lead her through the unkempt living room up to the base of the stairs.
Emmy watched his movements with interested curiosity. They were swift and fluid, however somewhat ungraceful as well. She noticed a rather large hole in the train of his robe, which was flittering behind the man in hopes to keep up with him. To be honest, Emmy was somewhat surprised that she was carrying both of her suitcases. She had been raised by a man who had lived in the time where chivalry was an unwritten rule, and expected the men of today to have some form of familiarity with etiquette, despite it being practically extinct.
As though Jason Marshall could read her mind, he stopped abruptly and spun around, causing his hair to curtain his face once again. Emmy had to strain her muscles to stop so that she would not run into him.
“I apologize,” he said, after brushing his hair back. “I seem to have forgotten my manners.” He looked at her bags before meeting her eyes. “May I?” he asked, raising his firm brow.
Emmy’s face betrayed her thoughts by turning an unattractive shade of red. Deciding not to trust her voice, she nodded and handed him her bags. Emmy made it a point to avoid accidentally touching him, and once the two bags were in his hands, she mumbled a meek word of thanks. The corner of his lips curled up in response and again, he nodded, before turning and finally ascending the narrow staircase.

Emmy Neal needs a job. Desperately. Her grandfather, the only family she has, is in and out of the hospital due to various illnesses and the medical bills are stacking up. It’s difficult to find a steady job in South Haven – everything is either taken or seasonal, except one.
Jason Marshall needs a maid. His cabin and his eating habits have been declining recently, though, to be fair, they have always been in a slippery slope. Being out o the public’s eye for the past five years has given him time to remember why he started rapping in the first place and work on his fourth studio album. The problem is, everyone still believes he killed his wife and her lover even though he was legally acquitted on a technicality, which makes the prospect of a comeback difficult to come by. If he can get one person to give him a chance, he knows others will, too.
In this modern retelling of a classic fairytale, Emmy will learn that beasts can be beautiful, love can be dark, and attraction can be deadly.

Read Chapter 1:
The first thought Emmy Atler had upon seeing him was how someone so beautiful could kill his wife and her lover. Because Jason Marshall was beautiful; any woman (and even some men) who could see (and anyone who could not see most certainly could feel) his beauty. While he was relatively short for a male, standing at five foot ten, he had incredibly angular features. His face was heart-shaped, with high cheekbones. His eyes were dark, deep, and soulful, hidden behind thick-rimmed glasses. Emmy made sure to note not to stare into those eyes in fear that she might lose a piece of her in them. His lips looked soft and shapely, his top lip only slightly smaller than his bottom lip. Oddly enough, it was Mr. Marshall’s nose that Emmy was fascinated with the most; it was pointed and defined, the nostrils flaring out almost like the wings of a bird. His hair was dark and shaggy, constantly falling into his face on its own accord. It was longer than normal, coming down to about his chin. His shoulders were broad, hidden by an old, tattered robe. Emmy noticed that for a man of thirty-eight, his body was still in good shape as evidenced by his clinging muscle shirt and loose pajama pants.

At first, I wrote poetry before moving to fiction. Growing up in rural South Carolina meant I had to find my own ways of entertaining myself. I could often be found either reading or scribbling away in a notebook. Not much has changed since then.

EXCERPT:
She snapped her head in his direction.
"I beg your pardon."
Amusement raised Jaden's brow along
with his coffee cup. His eyes sparkled over the rim, forcing her breath to
catch in her chest.
What in the hell did he mean by that?
Sori covered the smile he was fighting
by pretending to scratch his eye, but his amusement was still evident in his
tone when he spoke. "What Jaden's asking is…what's your hurry?"
"I've already imposed quite a bit
on your kindness."
"It's been one night."
Choosing to ignore Jaden's remark, she
continued. "I don't want to take advantage of your hospitality. I'd like
to find Lytell soon, it's been awhile and I missed him very much."
"Yeah?" The clank of Jaden's
cup crashing down on its saucer once again caused her shoulders to jump. He
leaned forward, pushing the bowl of sugar-covered strawberries toward her.
"Care for some fruit, while you tell us what you miss most about him?"
She kept her focus on Sori. "Will
Jaden be joining us as well?"
His brows pressed together as his
glance slid in confusion over to Jaden then jumped back to her.
"Ah--"
A sharp snapping of Jaden's fingers
grabbed her attention. When she looked, he smirked. "No, I won't. But
thanks for asking. Nice to know you'll miss me."
Kindise tried but failed to stop her
mouth from falling open. Incensed by his insinuations in front of Sori.
"Ah, someone want to fill me
in?" His glance ricocheted between them.
"There's nothing to tell."
She got up, spun on her heels and marched from the kitchen muttering.
"I'll be in my room. Let me know when you're ready to go."
Jaden held up the bowl of strawberries.
"Sure you wouldn't like some sweetness before you go?"
