Writing
Fantasy- Pros & Cons
Fantasy as
a genre is marked by its freedom.
Whatever
you can imagine, you can create in a fantasy world--floating cities in the
clouds, steam-powered dragons, titanic clashes of magic in the sky--and then
you can build from there.
Whatever
story you want to tell, you can cloak it and shroud it in the guise of fantasy,
whether it’s retelling a piece of human history (like the War of the Roses in
Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire),
offering pointed social commentary (such as in Jacqueline Carey’s Kusheline series), or just showing a
gritty slaughterfest that exposes the primal urges of the human experience
(check out Joe Abercrombie--you’ll see what I mean). The scope of possibility
is vast, limited only to what you can dream.
There are
conventions, sure, as there are in any sort of genre fiction, but those
conventions can be broken or tossed aside with good planning. My good friend
and one of my favorite authors R.A. Salvatore once defined fantasy as “good
wins,” but sometimes it gets more complicated. I write morally ambiguous
fantasy scripted not in black and white but shades of gray. There doesn’t have
to be a terribly evil ancient evil overlord plotting to take over the world
(through evil methods, of course)--a great story can be two people on the same
side competing over the same prize, or heroes being manipulated against each
other (plus one evil mastermind). As long as you know what they are, the rules
are yours to bend and break.
I don’t
think there are any Cons to writing fantasy--that’s why I’ve been doing it for
most of my life. The only Con is probably in publishing fantasy. The publishing industry is difficult,
regardless of what you write, but fantasy is one of those genres that has the
extra hindrance of being pretty widely panned among critics (though it’s
getting better as fantasy achieves more and more success in the mainstream), as
well as certain elements of its fanbase that feel extremely possessive of the
genre. We’ve seen that play out over the last few years, with rising tides of
argument and harassment online from self-appointed gatekeepers of the genre.
The fact
is, though, that fantasy is for everyone. It is a huge tent with plenty of room
for all sorts of stories and all sorts of fans. It is a genre where you can and
should write what you love, and don’t let anyone stop you.
I am a speculative fiction author, mostly writing fantasy, science fiction, and some mix of the two. I'm probably best known for the Forgotten Realms series SHADOWBANE (the tale of a thief turned vigilante paladin, sworn to a dead god), as well as a growing body of short stories in various anthologies and available for download on the web. (Seriously, check my website, it's pretty awesome.)
I am also a known quantity in the gaming industry, designing for the legendary tabletop RPG Dungeons and Dragons as well as other systems.
When I'm not writing, gaming, or more writing, I compose technical documentation by day and fight injustice by night. I lives in Seattle and am married with pets.
