Salem's Revenge #1
by David Estes
Published: October 1, 2014
Salem's Revenge strikes without warning or mercy, ravaging the powerless human race under the forces of united gangs of witches, wizards, and warlocks. During the slaughter, Rhett Carter's foster parents and sister are killed, and his best friend and girlfriend are abducted by a gang of witches calling themselves the Necromancers, who deal in the dark magic of raising the dead. Rhett's sword-wielding neighbor with a mysterious past saves Rhett from becoming another casualty of the massacre and teaches him the skills he needs to survive in this new world.
Rhett is broken, his normal high school life of book blogging and football playing shoved in a witch-apocalyptic blender. The only thing he has left is his burning desire for revenge. Armed with his new witch hunting skills and a loyal, magic powered dog named Hex, he sets out into the unknown with one mission: hunt and destroy those who took away everyone he ever loved.
But Rhett isn't just a witch hunter; He has secrets of his own that he has yet to discover, secrets that his enemies will stop at nothing to keep him from.
And discovering the truth about himself is the human race's only hope.
My Review:
I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.
Rhett Carter is not your average teenage boy. He plays on the football team at his high school but it is not what he wants to do. He only plays because it is what his foster dad wants. He says that with Rhett's size and height he will make a great football player which will earn him a scholarship. But Rhett had rather be home reading and blogging. Rhett his best friend Xavier or Xave as he and his girlfriend Beth call him are all very great friends and nerds. As the saying goes if you see one you see them all. Most of the time they are all three together; Xave acts as Rhett's bodyguard sometimes when some of the guys on the football team is picking on Rhett. Rhett is the kind of guy that is so nice that he wouldn't hurt a flea especially to save his self. But Xave will take up for and fight for Rhett anytime the need arises.
Rhett may not like to fight but after the witches that no one believes in starts killing all the humans and takes over the world he doesn't have a choice. It is fight or die. The witches start killing everybody because they are just fighting back trying to get there revenge for all the times in past when the humans killed them. There are several different types or gangs of witches with different powers.
After the witches kill Rhett's latest foster family a neighbor takes him in and trains him to fight. He teaches him how to hunt and kill witches. Rhett has never been one to fight but now he has no choice. He wants revenge for the death of his family, his girlfriend and his best friend. He believes that the Necromancers have taken Xave and Beth. Necromancers are witches that bring the dead back to life. When Rhett learns to fight he sets out on his own to find to Xave and Beth.
On his journey he meets up with this feisty girl Laney and her little sister Trisha. Laney and Rhett are always bickering about something. Laney always has a smart remark to make no matter what anyone says. Laney's only concern in life now is to keep her little sister safe. Laney decides to tag along with Rhett on his journey to find Beth and Xave. They meet a few sleazy characters along the way. The gangs of witches are not the only thing they have to watch out for now in the apocalypse humans can be more dangerous than the witches. You can't trust anyone these days.
I am very grateful that I was given this opportunity to read Brew. I love apocalyptic books and books with witches in them. Put the two together and you come out with the most amazing book ever. Brew is my first book about witches and the apocalypse mixed and I loved it. I can't wait to read more. I can't wait to the next book Boil. I want to know how Rhett makes it after what he finds in Brew. Will his heart heal so that he can love again? Will Laney and Rhett fall in love?
