Summary:

Interview with Melissa MacVicar
What inspired you to write
One Broken Day?
I wouldn’t call it inspiration but an inciting incident. The
incident was the terrible tragedy that happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School
on December 14, 2012. Sandy Hook sparked national conversation about so many
issues from gun violence to mental health and more.
One part of the story that I became interested in was the family
of the shooter. Many people felt that there were warning signs, and that the
perpetrator’s family should have seen what he was capable of. In the days that
followed, some blamed his family for not stopping him. His brother, in fact,
was arrested at gunpoint in the aftermath.
As a result of my pondering this tragedy, I found myself
considering what responsibility we all have for the actions of the people we
are close too. Is everyone, in fact, culpable for the actions taken by those
they love? Surely, we can distance ourselves and leave everyone in our lives if
we don’t like how they act but does the world ever let us leave our family-—blood or otherwise?
Maybe we are always stricken with guilt by association when it comes to them.
These are just a few of the questions
that led me to write this book.
Can you tell us a little bit
about the next book you have planned for the future?
I am writing an adult romantic thriller tentatively titled Lesson
Plans. The one sentence summary so far is: Both a precocious teenage girl and a dedicated teacher
become embroiled in a texting scandal with a vengeful young man that could have
dangerous consequences.
Can you tell us a little bit
about the characters in One Broken Day?
I poured my heart into Lainey and Gage. They embody so much of my
own emotion, it’s a bit scary. I had to really go there with how Lainey would
feel, and I can tell you that it wasn’t always fun. Same with Gage. I love
books with a ton of emotion so I tried to write one. I hope I succeeded.
You know I think we all have
a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?
Ah! This is too hard. John Green, Anita Shreve, Gillian Flynn, and
Jennifer Echols. I don’t have just one. Story plus characters. That is truly
what does it for me. One thing I love about Anita Shreve is her strong
settings, though, so I can’t really say
for sure. I guess they have to have all three elements for me to fall in love
with a book and a writer.
If you could time-travel
would you travel to the future or the past? Where would you like to go and why
would you like to visit this particular time period?
I would definitely go back in time because I love history. My first novel Ever Near has a strong
historical tie in. I would probably go back to the Victorian Era just to check
it out, not to stay. I would not want to be a woman then.
Do you have any little fuzzy
friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?
Yes, I have two rescue animals--a gray tabby cat named Puddy who
is super friendly and a black and white rat terrier mix named Bandit who loves
to lay around and snore in his old age.
About the Author
Melissa was born and mostly raised on Nantucket Island, and she
currently lives there with her husband and two teenage children. When not being
a wife and mother and teaching writing to seventh graders, she enjoys binge
watching shows like Big Little Lies, House of Cards, and Outlander. Despite the
rumors to the contrary, she does not actually wish she was a teenager again,
nor does she see ghosts like the main character in her first novel, Ever Near.
