HARBINGER

Niah Bach

GENRE: Fantasy Romance

BLURB:

In Praetoria, the elite do not have any special talents. Then why is it the only imperial princess is having vision-like nightmares? These dreams foretell the destruction of her world and the death of her family, and every day they gain strength in their horror.

The return of a particular imperial rook changes the tone of her dreams, providing her with much needed relief. But this too is perplexing, for he is a rook and she an elite. The law strictly forbids a union between the two.

Yet four little female moiohs scheme to bring them together, providing the path to secure their future, a future threatened by traitors who would use the princess as a way to steal her father's throne.

Excerpt:

Keira opens her eyes slowly, fearfully, her heart hammering in her chest as she steels herself for the worst. To her relief she finds herself alone in a dimly lit room. The scent of Tyleeose flowers lightly fragrances the air and she can sense nothing dangerous near her. Carefully she studies her surroundings and struggles to get her bearings. To her right is a dark door leading to only the High One knows where, and to her left is a softly illuminated archway heading to another chamber from which sounds of moiohish voices can be heard.

After a few moments of silent debate her curiosity gets the best of her and she walks tentatively toward the sound. Before long her hand grazes the smooth stone wall of the opening and, after taking a deep fortifying breath, she cautiously peeks around its edge. Her eyes are drawn to three tiny female figures sitting in a semi-circle in the centre of the room, their innocent faces illuminated by a small incandescent orb set on a shelf behind the moioh facing her.

As one they turn to look at her, and she is struck by their uncommon resemblance to each other. The colour of their eyes and hair are the only things that distinguish one from the other. Even their expressions are identical as they note her entrance and smile radiantly at her. In sweet unison, they sing out, “Mama is here, Mama is here!”

Startled, she stares at them dumbfounded, her mouth dry and eyes wide in surprise and uncertainty. The moioh facing Kiera, her green eyes glowing with an inner light, raises her hand and beckons Kiera forward, her melodious voice entreating, “Come closer, Mama. Little sister needs you.” Her companions on either side nod in agreement.

She notices a bassinet on the floor between them and feels compelled to step closer. She looks down and sees nestled between soft blankets of crimson and gold a beautiful, fragile looking bayba. Her expression softens and her heart melt as the little one opens her tiny mouth in a huge yawn. She looks up at Kiera with sleepy little hazel eyes and, with an expression of utter contentment, she reaches out as if asking Kiera to hold her. She eagerly steps forward to obey.

Just as she is about to pick the precious bayba up, two strong arms encircle her waist. Shocked, she twists her torso and head, bracing her hands on her unknown assailant’s arms. Anxiously, she looks up into the greenest eyes she has ever seen. Her mouth opens and closes as her mind races for the proper reprimand for his unseemly actions. Just as she is about to say something to put him in his place, she recognizes him.

My Review:

Harbinger is an intense and captivating read that gradually reveals what is happening, keeping you engaged as you try to understand the unfolding events. I give high praise to the author for the tremendous effort that must have gone into writing a story like Harbinger.

The people of Harbinger live under a caste system. The Elite typically possess no magic; only the Praetoria have magical abilities. Keira, the imperial princess, experiences visions and dreams about the destruction of her world and the demise of her family. She finds herself trapped in her dream world for days while her family keeps vigil over her.

The world-building in Harbinger is astonishing. I truly love the world that has been created for Harbinger, as it is remarkable. I can only imagine the amount of work involved in crafting the world of Harbinger and how long it must have taken to write such a story.

I look forward to the next installment in the Praetoria Chronicles to discover what happens next.

If you enjoy fantasy tales with magic and a forbidden love story, you will find Harbinger to be a delightful read. Grab a copy of Harbinger today!
