Vada Lawson can’t wait to be a superhero. Born into a family with

life. But her indoctrination into the underground super community is derailed
when normals start breaking out in superpowers themselves.
Not trained to control their new abilities, the normals are
frightened and vulnerable. Then their mutilated corpses begin turning up all
over town. What the heck?
Somehow, with the help—and hindrance—of an annoying newly-minted
super named Orion, Vada has to stop the chaos before it destroys her and
everything she holds dear…and ruins her superhero debut.
No one ever said that being a superhero was easy…

Interview
with J.D. Wright
What inspired you to write Masked?
The
idea actually came from a children’s television show about superheroes which
got me thinking about using it for a theme. Then I started looking around and
realized there just aren’t that many superhero-themed books for older teen
girls and young adults, so I decided to write one! I was inspired by my own
love of superheroes and villains, along with some of my favorite shows/movies
that featured them.
Can you tell us a little bit about the next
books in Superheroes UnderCover or what you have planned for the future?
I
am currently in the middle of writing the second book of this series. It’s
still untitled but the outline is firm and I’m hoping a title idea comes to me
soon. Or maybe I will hold a contest to let a fan pick a name for me? I’m still
thinking about it.
In
the second book, we will follow Vada and Nick as they navigate preparing for
college and trying to catch the supervillain who evaded them in the first book.
We will also see how our favorite villains work on getting some revenge on their
nemesis. Oh, and Vada starts to date someone while attempting to keep her super
work separate from her personal life. Good luck to her!
Can you tell us a little bit about the
characters in Masked?
Sure!
First up is Vada, our superhero-in-training who has been preparing for super
work her entire life. She comes from a family of supers and she’s ready to join
them in fighting crime but her debut doesn’t go according to plan. Then we also
have Nick, our golden boy who may seem like he lives a perfect life but it’s
all an illusion. He accidentally drinks a formula that changes his life in a
major way. We also have several secondary superheroes and a few naughty
villains who round out the cast. Cyper City is a colorful place.
You know I think we all have a favorite
author. Who is your favorite author and why?
Strangely
enough, I don’t have a favorite author. In my spare time, I read and review
books (about 3-5 per week) so I read lots of amazing books and my list of loved
authors is way too long to just pick one. But I do have a favorite book and
that is On the Banks of Plum Creek by
Laura Ingalls Wilder. I love the simplicity of the book and how reading it
calms me down. And for some reason it also makes me want to garden. Go figure.
If you could time-travel would you travel to
the future or the past? Where would you like to go and why would you like to
visit this particular time period?
I
would like to visit the future. At least 1,000 years from now. I just want to
see if we ever do meet up with aliens and if it’s anything like the sci-fi
romances I’ve been reading lately. The human race has changed so much in the
past few hundred years that I wonder what we’ll be like then. Or if we will
still be here at all.
Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a
dog or a cat? Or any pets?
We
own chickens. They’re outside pets who roam the backyard and have taken over my
porch swing. Little rascals. If we ever do move to a home with more space, I
plan to get goats again, as I had when I was a child. What can I say? I have a
thing for farm animals. Oh, and a pig too! And maybe some more chickens, a few
ducks… Don’t tell my poor husband about this.
Thanks for taking time out of your busy
schedule to visit with us today.
About the Author
Writing has always been a hobby
of mine, beginning as a young child. It was a way to cope with losing my father
at seven years of age. I started with poetry and was featured several times on
the amazing poetry blog, Autumn Leaves, by Sondra Ball. My love for poetry soon
led to writing songs in middle school and beyond, which I still do
occasionally. Music has always been an important part of my existence, so
writing songs came naturally to me. In high school, I started my own novel,
however, life got in the way and I never finished it.
Fast forward many years later and I find myself married with three
children, absorbed in my busy life with commitments to my family, work, school,
church, and charities, among other things. One day I came across my old binder,
with notes from my first novel, and it was with those notes that I conjured up the
elusive Everealm.
I write to please readers such as myself, who have a love for
fantasy and romance, but like a little danger and sex in their reading. I wrote
the book with a mature audience in mind, who can appreciate a hearty imaginary
world with magic and the unknown, but want more than fluffy love stories with
wizards in them. They want the romance, magic, and danger, all wrapped into
one.
