Virtual Tour + #Giveaway: The Chronicles of Alcinia by Miriam Newman @miriamnewman @GoddessFish

The Chronicles of Alcinia
by Miriam Newman
GENRE: Historical fantasy

BLURB:

Available for the first time as an e-book bundle, the award-winning historical fantasy series The Chronicles of Alcinia weaves a tale of war, history, passion and romance.   In Book I, The King’s Daughter, Tarabenthia of Alcinia should grow to inherit her father’s throne by the rocky cliffs of the sea.  When invaders seize her land, what will she sacrifice in the name of love?  In Book II, Heart of the Earth, the Northern Prince who has always wanted Tia saves her life.  But will the price of his protection be too high?  And finally in Book III, Ice Maiden, readers who wondered about the fate of Tia’s oldest son have their answer.  Sometimes heart-wrenching, always powerful, this is a tale of heroes and the women who loved them.

Excerpt:

There is a place between death and life where the souls of our loved ones dwell, trapped or perhaps assigned.  I know, for I have seen it.

There was much left unsaid between us and perhaps that is why I first saw the shade of my father.  What can be said between a King who barters his daughter and a daughter who seeks to overthrow her father?  It was the same with us in that place as it had been in life and the ghost of my father did not speak.

Mother was there, too, a pale remnant of the Queen whose poor tortured heart failed her on the night Tumagis defeated the men of Alcinia at Landsfel.

The one person I did not see was Sergius.  Of course, my husband had not worshipped the Goddess of Alcinia but his own Omani gods, yet I do not think that was the reason.  In my heart, I believe he had gone to Arianya.  I was the wife of his middle years and the one who gave him children.  She was the wife of his youth…his first love.  Even at his graveside, I had whispered to her spirit to care for him, and I think that she came to Sergius Magistri.

Interview with Miriam Newman

What inspired you to write The Chronicles of Alcinia?

The first book of my trilogy, titled The King’s Daughter, literally came to me in a dream.  It was such a persistent dream that I knew it had to come out on paper, and so it did.  The vivid scene I had envisioned on so many nights became the focal point of the first part of the story.  One dream is all it took.  That’s a commentary on life.

Can you tell us a little bit about the next books in The Chronicles of Alcinia or what you have planned for the future?

The Chronicles of Alcinia already contains my first three historical fantasies:  The King’s Daughter, Heart of the Earth and Ice Maiden.  My next work, which isn’t a part of this series, is Dark Child, a Bardic-style retelling of the old Irish legend called Deirdre of the Sorrows.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in The Chronicles of Alcinia?

There are many in the series—it’s an epic work.  But everything begins with Tia of Alcinia, the  King’s daughter who is sold into slavery from her native land.  She is frankly a spoiled brat at the beginning of the series, but you can see her potential as a woman deeply in service to her country and determined to save it by whatever means.  The means to that end is Sergius Magistri, a reputedly mad general who nevertheless rescues her from a savage beating .  Discovering a genuine nobility in him, Tia is hard put the maintain the hatred she initially feels for him and ultimately the deep love he has for Tia is the salvation of her land.

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

T.H. White who wrote The Once and Future King is an absolute genius of fantasy and whimsy.  He was very much an influence on my writing.

If you could time-travel would you travel to the future or the past? Where would you like to go and why would you like to visit this particular time period?

Oh, the past, the past.  Although I have written science fiction and enjoy it, I feel my roots in the history of this planet.  I would love to travel in time to the era when Vikings were contributing to what would become the very early Medieval Era in England.  It was a time of high drama, intrigue and political maneuvering that set the stage for much of our current Western civilization.

Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

Too many!  I have been involved for many years in animal rescue and have fostered and adopted out numerous dogs and cats and the occasional horse.  Right now I have two hounds, a Border Collie mix, a shepherd mix and a pit bull, as well as a cat someone dumped here in the middle of winter.  I found her in my barn about to have kittens (which unfortunately did not survive) and she is still here.  My last horse just died at the ripe old age of thirty-three.  Right now I am taking a break from barn work, which I’ve been doing for fifty years.

Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to visit with us today.

Thank you for asking me.

Thanks to everyone who has visited and commented. Yes, I was beyond thrilled with that cover. This one is my "book of the heart" and it reflected my feelings perfectly. Although I created my own world, it draws on the history of Roman Britain, Viking history and Celtic myths and legends. History freak that I am, I had an absolutely wonderful time writing it!

Nice to see some familiar faces and thanks for the kind words. As far as my favorite literary character, I have to admit I am a King Arthur devotee. From my first reading of The Once and Future King, I think I have read most literary works about Arthur and a great deal of history and archeology as well. It's a fascinating period.
