How do you select the names of your characters?
Oh, wow, this is such a process for me. I can’t
tell you how many times I changed the names of my characters. I’d first
conceptualized the series when I was twelve years old, so, yeah, as I changed
and grew up, so did the characters and how I perceived them.
Elizabeth, the main heroine, had initially been
Shannon, and Adam, the story’s hero, had originally been Joseph. Awful, right??
By the time I reached my twenties, the names didn’t fit them at all. Neither
did the names of my secondary characters. So, I scrapped them, looked at each
of the characters individually, and gave them the first name that popped in my
head. It felt more organic that way. Like they were real people rather than fictional
cut outs I’d contrived a label for. Although, I’ll admit, I have a soft spot
for the name Adam. Pairing it with the name Hunt gave it the edge I was hunting for ;) But as I fleshed out his
character, he totally owned it, and I can’t picture him as anything else.
As for the names of the secondary characters,
some are shout outs to the film Somewhere
In Time, which inspired the series. If you haven’t seen it, stop what
you’re doing and watch it now! And maybe keep an ear tuned for the names I
selected, he he. And that’s my process!
