Three friends...warrior knights, One battle will change their lives, Love will change their worlds.
HEROES LIVE FOREVER
Elinor Hawthorne has inherited a house haunted by two medieval knights, Basil Manneville and Guy Guiscard. Basil is literally the knight of her dreams. She never expected to “meet” a ghost face to face let alone fall in love with one. Living the normal life together that they’d want is impossible unless fate intervenes.
A lifetime later fate does intervene. Basil, still in love with Elinor, is told her spirit lives on in a young woman. He is given another chance at life to find her.
JOURNEY IN TIME
The budding romance between London attorney, Shakira Constantine, and her client, Alex Lancaster is put to the test when the couple finds themselves torn through time back to the medieval world. It’s a world Alex has a strong connection to, a connection that will cost him his life unless they can find a way to return to this time. Without him, Shakira is condemned to live in a dangerous medieval world alone.
Together they’ll struggle to discover a way back to the modern world while dealing with the political and social intrigues of 14th Century England. The intrigues of that world all too often work against their efforts to get home.
KNIGHT BLINDNESS
Stephen Palmer, a wounded medieval knight finds himself torn through time from the battlefield to the modern and alien world.
Seriously injured, he now must make his way in a world he has no context for and no knowledge about.
Esme Crippen is hired as his tutor. Love is something he does understand and as the two fall into love, they both must overcome the fact the world thinks him mad with his time-travel talk, including Esme.
Interview with Chris Karlsen
How did you become involved with the subject or theme of your book?
With Heroes Live Forever, I wanted to write a story that included reincarnation. It is a topic that fascinates me. I’ve also always enjoyed clever and heartwarming ghost stories, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, The Bishop’s Wife, The Canterville Ghost. I thought it would be fun to write a story where the heroine falls in love with a ghost and then see how I could help bring them together as a real couple.
Journey in Time came from Heroes Live Forever. As I wrote the hero in that story, I gave him a best friend who was his friend in life and death. That character was such fun to write, I knew early on I would give him his own tale.
What were your goals and intentions in this book, and how well do you feel you achieved them?
My goal was to write stories where love reached across time. A love that endured despite unimaginable obstacles and dangers inherent in the different centuries. I also wanted to show heroines with incredible strength, intellect and the fortitude needed to survive. I believe I achieved my goals. I am happy with the characters, even the villains.
What was the hardest part of writing this book?
My father was a history professor so I grew up with a love of history. All my books have deep history of the time and place and people of the period in them. I like research. I do a ton. I fill 3-ring binders with information. For me, picking and choosing what to include and what to leave out can be tough. Some facts or anecdotes are so neat to learn but then I must consider how useful they are to the story.
What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
I love, love, love writing the different characters and their personality traits and manner of speech. The little things that each person has that is a part of who they are. It isn’t just the heroine and hero I love to develop and give life to but their friends and the support characters. To me, every character adds something to make the time and place real for the reader. The story unfolds through their eyes and various points of view.
Where there alternate endings you considered?
I know what the ending of a story will be when I start writing it. I’ve never had an alternate ending. I’ve changed some beginnings, not often but once or twice. I have changed events in the middle more. I’ll have an idea for a major event to happen in some part of the book and when I got there, found it just wasn’t workable. I have to mentally downshift and rethink how to get the emotional reaction I planned on but with another approach entirely.
Can you share some stories about people you met while researching this book?
I didn’t meet anyone in particular writing the Knights in Time stories, which Heroes Live Forever and Journey in Time are the first two in that series.
A number of years ago, I wrote two nautical archaeology books set in Turkey. The oldest ship ever recovered is the Uluburun, which was found of the coast of Turkey. I visited Turkey numerous times and met over several days with one of the senior divers on the recovery. He went over the recovery process. How the dives are setup, and what the divers experience. He was a wealth of information. I also met with the young woman who oversees the Institute of Nautical Archaeology in Bodrum, Turkey. This is where the artifacts are kept, documented, cleaned and restored. I was able to tour the institute more than once.
For the Bloodstone series, which is set in Victorian London, my detective is from Wales. He served in the military with the South Wales Borderers 24th Regiment and fought in the Zulu wars. He suffers mild PTSD from the brutal battle at Rorke’s Drift. PTSD wasn’t recognized in those days but modern readers will understand.
One of my visits to England and Wales, I visited the regimental headquarters. The docent, a veteran of the 24th, took me on a private tour of the museum and discussed in detail the history of the Zulu wars and the 24th. My Detective Bloodstone is with the London Metropolitan Police. While in England, I met several of their officers and detectives to discuss the department’s overall history.
What genre of books do you enjoy reading?
I like historical romances and historical novels in general. I also like a couple of excellent crime authors. I am a huge fan of Bernard Cornwell, Julie Anne Long, Michael Connolly, and Joseph Wambaugh.
