Elfi shivered as the mammoth Viking took her hand and lowered his massive head, brushing bristled lips across her sensitive skin while the lupine eyes of the wolfskin observed her with a lurid, otherworldly glow.

Gilded by the golden sun, Njörd’s thick chestnut hair gleamed, radiating the salty scent of the sea. “I am honored to meet you, Elfi of Étretat.” A current flowed up Elfi’s arm at his unsettling touch.

“Ribe is a vital Viking trade center on the western shores of the North Sea,” Richard continued, oblivious to Elfi’s distress. “Njörd is known throughout Denmark as Wolf of the Nordic Seas.” The deep timbre of Jarl Rikard’s voice magnified the menace of the name. And the thick white fur and haunting eyes of the monstrous wolfskin further intensified her unease.

Njörd rose to his full, towering height—still clutching Elfi’s trembling hand.

My Review:

Elfi Thorfinnsdóttir is a skilled shieldmaiden who desires nothing more than to avenge her brother's death. She vows that one day she will accomplish this. Elfi’s brother, Dag, taught her everything she knows about wielding a sword.

Elfi’s father has been taken captive by the Frankish count, who plans to use him to seize their castle and leverage Elfi’s marriage to his advantage. Elfi has no intention of marrying the count and has her own plans. She has sought the assistance of Richard the Fearless—the Viking Duke of Normandy—and the Danish Jarl of Ribe, known as the Wolf of the Nordic Seas, to help rescue her father and reclaim her home. Elfi intends to marry Njörd to save her father. With Njörd and his men at her side, she hopes to bring her father back and preserve her home.

I loved the relationship between Elfi and Njörd. I appreciated how he understood her and allowed her to be herself, unlike her father. The descriptions are so well crafted that I had no trouble visualizing everything in my mind, as if I were part of their world, standing right beside the characters as they went about their day.

Wolf of the Nordic Seas kept me in suspense with its many twists and turns, drawing me into its depths from beginning to end. The story repeatedly reminded me of the TV show Vikings as I read. I love this world created for the Valiant Vikings series and can’t wait to read more.
