A Hero Rising
A New Dawn #3
by Aubrie Dionne

Summary From Goodreads:

After watching his love leave on a colony ship, James Wilfred must save those left behind from a planetary apocalypse. Their salvation lies in an unfinished ship tucked away in a secret government base, and only James can break in and pilot him and his people to freedom on a nearby space station.

Skye O’Connor’s boyfriend never returns after his gang attempts an assassination of the Governor, and the State Building is destroyed. Worse, crazed moonshiners addicted to the chemical Morpheus have stormed the city, and she must find a safe place for her and her boyfriend’s daughter. When a heroic man saves her, Skye asks to accompany him on his quest to find the last colony ship left on Earth.

As the city falls around them, James and Skye must work together to build a new future, all the while rediscovering their ability to love, before the apocalypse claims them both.

Excerpt:

“Can you fly it?” Skye climbed up beside him, holding Carly close.

“Yeah, of course.” Such a vehicle was the product of his dreams. In his mind, he’d been flying it all his life. The hatch closed, and he settled into the pilot’s seat. Using his miniscreen, he downloaded the system controls and input the coordinates Dal had given him. While waiting for his processor to analyze the data, he sent a message to Dal.

Hovercraft acquired. En route to Project Exodus.

He could picture the old man smiling three hundreds levels down. The miniscreen beeped and a map appeared along with a bright yellow line leading to the coordinates in the Barrens. James pulled back a lever, and the engines rumbled below them like awakened giants, sending fake beach sand into the air. The ship tilted slightly as it rose up and hovered over the pool, creating ripples in the water below them.

James took the controls, and they sped off the roof of the building, shooting up into the night sky. The streets below scurried with motion. James shone a honing light down between the buildings. Moonshiners piled on top of one another, reaching to the sky. He shrugged off a shiver and pulled up, glad to leave the city.

My Review:

My first book by Aubrie Dionne was Colonization (Paradise Reclaimed, #1). In Colonization I read about the planet Paradise 21 where a deep space transport vessel was headed and I just had to know more about this planet. So I bought all of the A New Dawn books so I could read more about the planet and other characters. A Hero Rising is the third book in the series A New Dawn. I read Paradise 21 first and then I read the third book A Hero Rising next and skipped right over book 2 Tundra 37. At first I thought oh no what have I done? But then I realized that each book has different characters and stories. Although I am sure that they were meant to be read in order I do not feel as if I missed anything and am certain that they can be read as standalone.

In A Hero Rising we meet James, Skye and Carly. At the begging James watches the love of his life fly away from him on space transport ship. James knows that it is very unlikely that he will ever see her again. But he is doing what he believes that he has to do. He probably could have been on that ship with her and knowing that he was safe but he couldn't leave his people behind on an earth that was destined for destruction. Earth has been overrun by the Moonshine people. Moonshine people are people who might as well be dead. They are like the undead or are believed to be dead. They are stronger and have teeth like razors. These people who have been dubbed the Moonshiners have been taking a drug called Morpheus that has turned them into what they are. James stayed on Earth so that he could get his people off the planet on a stolen space ship. Hopefully he can steal the ship from the government and leave before they destroy Earth.

While James is trying to get to this ship he runs into Skye and Carly and saves them from a woman Moonshiner. Skye asks him to take her and Carly with him on his ship and he agrees. They run into lots of trouble on their way to the ship. They have a long and treacherous journey. Carly is Skye's boyfriends daughter but they are real close to each other. They have been giving no other choice with Skye's boyfriend gone most of the time. He cares more for his gang than he does for Skye or his little girl. But Skye will fight to the death for Carly. Her only objective is to make sure Carly is safe and alive. The only way for her to do that is to stay alive herself. With everything that James and Skye go through together they soon start to care about each other as well. They both realize that they are probably never going to see the ones they loved ever again and that it is ok to find love with someone else.

This is like the fifth book by Aubrie Dionne that I have read and I have honestly and truly loved them all. Aubrie is one of the best author's that I have ever read. I highly recommend both the Paradise Reclaimed and the A New Dawn Series to anyone who loves Science Fiction or Dystopian novels. I have not read them all yet but I do plan on reading them all in the near future. Let me give you fair warning when you pick up a book written by Aubrie Dionne my advice is grab a cup of coffee, a glass of tea or your favorite beverage what ever that may be along with a snack because trust me you are going to be there in your favorite chair for a while all curled up because once you pick up one of her books you will not be able to put it down until you have read the last word. If you have any house work to do or any errands to run them you might want to do them before picking up one of her books to read.

About the Author:

Author photo dionne-authorphoto.jpg

Aubrie grew up watching the original Star Wars movies over and over again until she could recite and reenact every single scene in her backyard. She also loved The Goonies, Star Trek the Next Generation-favorite character was Data by far-, and Indiana Jones. But, her all time favorite movie was The Last Unicorn. She still wonders why the unicorn decided to change back to a unicorn in the end.

Aubrie wrote in her junior high yearbook that she wanted to be "A concert flutist" when she grew up. When she made that happen, she decided one career was not enough and embarked as a fantasy, sci fi author. Two careers seems to keep her busy. For now.

Now for the professional bio:

Aubrie Dionne is an author and flutist in New England. Her writings have appeared in Mindflights, Niteblade, Silver Blade, Emerald Tales, Hazard Cat, Moon Drenched Fables, A Fly in Amber, and Aurora Wolf. Her books are published by Entangled Publishing, Lyrical Press, and Gypsy Shadow Publishing. She recently signed her YA sci fi novel with Inkspell Publishing titled: Colonization: Paradise Reclaimed, which will release in October 2012. When she's not writing, Aubrie teaches flute and plays in orchestras. She's a big Star Trek TNG fan, as well as Star Wars and Serenity.
