Blog Tour + Review: Sugar Scars By Travis Norwood @TravisLNorwood @GHBTours #Giveaway
Sugar Scars
By- Travis Norwood
Genre- Post Apocalyptic/Sci Fi
Living after the apocalypse really isn’t that hard for most of the survivors. The virus killed all but 1 in 10,000. The few remaining people are left in a world of virtually unlimited resources. Grocery stores overflowing with food and drink. Thousands of empty houses to pick from.
But one survivor, a nineteen-year-old girl, requires more than simple food, water and shelter. As a type 1 diabetic her body desperately needs insulin to stay alive. With civilization gone, no one manufactures it anymore. She hoards all the insulin she can find, but every day marches toward the end of her stash of vials. She has a choice. Accept her fate and death, or tackle the almost insurmountable task of extracting and refining the insulin herself.
Brilliant scientists struggled to make the first insulin. What hope does a high school dropout have?
My
Review-
I received a free copy of the book from the author for my
honest opinion.
A virus has wiped out the world and only a
ratio of 1 in 10,000 has survived. One of those survivors doesn’t have much of
a problem of being alone. She has been alone or a loner most of her life so
being by herself now is really not a problem for her. She is not worried about
surviving and living on her own. I mean she is not going to starve the stores
have lots of food to last her for a very long time. There are lots and lots of
houses for her to pick from with so many people gone. She can live in any one
she would like. She could even move to another state if she chose too. But this
little nineteen year old girl has chosen to stay in her own little house that
she got all by herself without any help from anyone.
Sugar has type 1 diabetes and has to have
insulin to live. She takes all or most all of the insulin that she can find in
the pharmacy’s that she can find close by. She gets herself a big refrigerator
to keep all of her insulin in. But one day she happens to notice that the vials
have expiration dates on them and she only has enough insulin to last her for
maybe two years if she is lucky. When she discovers this she almost gives up
but something deep inside of her just won’t let her give in. She is a fighter
and is very determined to live.
All she needs to survive is more insulin, easy
right? Wrong. All the people who use to make it had died with the virus or
maybe by other means. Who knows what has happened to some of the people after
they discover that they have lost everyone that they ever cared about. Sugars
starts thinking that all she needs to do is make more insulin. But it is not as easy as she thought it might
be. She knew that it would be hard but she didn’t know how hard. She goes to libraries
and universities to find the books and all the equipment she needs to make
insulin.
While she is trying to figure out how to make
the insulin she needs to live she meets other people along the way and decides
that she doesn’t like being as along as she thought. Sugar has this great big
heart with a lot of passion for helping other people and putting her own life
in danger to save other people. Sugar has traveled a long hard road and her
journey is not over yet. On this journey she meets a lot of people some whom
she becomes very good friends with that will last a lifetime. But she always
meets some people that can’t take the heat and walks out of her life and breaks
her heart. Instead of it making her weaker it makes her stronger and wants to
live even more.
When I read the summary I knew I just had to
read Sugar Scars as I can relate to it because I have a nephew with type 1
diabetes and he has to live his life like Sugar. His pancreas doesn’t work at
all either. I have learned a lot by reading Sugar Scars that I did not know
about type 1 diabetes. Hopefully I will never have a need to know some of the
info in Sugar Scars but if we the world did happen to end and I survived along
with my nephew I could hopefully help him out and together we could make
insulin for him with Sugar’s help of course.
I really loved reading Sugar Scars and meeting
all of the characters. That Sugar is one tough little cookie with a heart of
gold. I would love to recommend Sugar Scars to anyone who loves a good story
especially an apocalyptic story. Sugar Scars will grab a hold of your heart
with the very first word and will keep tugging on it right up until the last
word and even then it will not let go. So grab your copy today so that you can
get started reading because this is one story you don’t want to miss out on. I
can’t wait until the next book makes its debut.
