She had a job to do, one only she and a handful of others were qualified to undertake. Whether she raked in the stream of zeroes or a pittance, it didn’t matter.

Someone had to save a species determined to wreak havoc upon itself and the planet they called home. After all she’d endured it would have been a no-brainer to leave that job to another, but she wasn’t built that way. Hearing the tortured thoughts of the world around her stirred an overwhelming desire to assuage that turmoil. Caring for people she didn’t know and would never meet wasn’t the conventional house-husband-kids suburban dream but it was the only goal she’d ever had. The only one she’d ever known, aside from the self-preservation drive that had kept her alive long enough to decide to save the world.
