Review: Shift of Shadow and Soul by Hilary Thompson @HilaryLThompson
Shift of Shadow and Soul
SoulShifter #1
By Hilary Thompson
Publisher: Star Shadow Books
Published: May 22, 2017
Genre: Science Fiction, Fantasy, Magic
Blurb:
There are three kinds of magic in the world, and Corentine
has the wrong one.
Long ago, the Restless King forced Corentine’s people into
hiding as he scoured their blood for the SoulShifter. When Corentine learns she
possesses some of the forbidden Shifter magic, she must hide her power or risk
the same death her twin suffered.
Raised to trust no-one, she rejects the General’s son Sy,
until she realizes his family secrets might be the key to unlocking hers. When
his brother turns against them, they are forced to fight family to save what’s
left of their home, or accept banishment to find a new future.
If Coren and Sy can’t convince their people to accept the
light of Shifter magic, the growing Shadow will ruin everyone’s chance of
freedom.
Travel this richly imagined world with a diverse cast that
readers have compared to fantasy favorites like Sarah J Maas and Leigh Bardugo.

My Review:
Corentine lives in a world where the men and women are
divided. The women live on an island while the men live in the city. Every year
the men come to the island for the hunt. A hunt is where the men chase the
women and when they catch them they spend the night together hoping to give the
guy who caught them a baby.
Corentine has been taught all her life not to ever let a man
a catch her. In her last year of the hunt Corentine catches the eye of the
General’s first son Syanshin. As this is Sy’s last year as well the General has
given him orders to catch a woman this year so he can produce an heir. Sy has
never believed in the way the women are treated or in the hunts.
Coren may have just met her match when it comes to Sy. During
the hunt Sy wittiness Coren using her magic; magic has been forbidden on Weshen
for a long time. Coren learns later that Sy has magic of his own. If they are
caught they will be banished from the island just like Coren’s little brother.
When they are outed by Sy’s brother they are determined that
they will return one day to fight for the right to use their magic again and
for other people with magical abilities that is being held against their will
by the king himself. But before they return they have a rough journey ahead of
them to put together their army and get ready for their fight against the king
and his men. Come join Coren and Sy on their journey for the right to use their
magic and to rescue their people.
I love the world that the author created for Shift of Shadow
and Soul it was unlike any that I have read before. I am very much hooked on
dystopian books at the moment and have read a lot and when I say Shift of
Shadow and Soul is way different than anything I have ever read then I am
saying it with experience. The writing was just awesome. The characters are
just magical in and of themselves. Coren is a strong woman not only physically
but mentally as well.
I did kind of have a little problem with men and women or
more like boys being separated from the girls for a whole year after being
introduced to them. Well not a problem per say but more like how did this
happen with boys and girls too. I guess they were kept so busy with training
that they didn’t have time to go hunting out of season. With saying this I
still loved and enjoyed Shift of Shadow and Soul and would like to read more of
Coren and Sy’s world.
I would recommend Shift of Shadow and Soul to anyone who
loves a good dystopian or fantasy novel. Pick up your copy today!
Author Bio:
Hilary Thompson was born to parents who made a habit of
taking roads less traveled. But she was also a first child, and an independent,
willful child, so she’s made a habit of taking a few roads on her own.
Now she teaches Creative Writing, English, and AP
Literature, writes whenever and wherever she can, and reads as much as her eyes
can handle.
Justice Buried (Starbright, Book One) is the first in a
dystopian fantasy series incorporating mythology and astrology. The series also
includes Balance Broken (Starbright Book Two), and the upcoming Destiny Risen (Starbright, Book Three). Three
novellas round out the series: Lexan’s Pledge, Stian’s Mistake, and Aitan’s Revenge.
