“In this richly imagined start to a new sci-fi series, Reed brings optimism to the goal of solving entrenched violence in a galaxy far, far away . . . A propulsive, sharply crafted tale about a planetary war.” -Kirkus Reviews
Breaker’s home is cleaved by blood. The three tribes on the planet Scarlatti, whose only difference is their blood color, each want to exploit Breaker’s valley for themselves. The feudal tension has already claimed red-blood Breaker’s leg and his older brother. Now all this 18-year old wants is to maintain the tenuous peace in order to keep his little ‘stroid of a brother alive. Malani, a red-blood raised blue, is a kidnapped POW and only wants to return to her adoptive home with her dangerous blue secrets. Luka, a red-blood stewing for trouble, wants to right wrongs done to his family and bath his home in justice.
All three intersect when Breaker discovers a wrecked starship and is given seven days by the green-bloods to fix and hand it over as a weapon. Breaker must decide if aiding his enemies is worth the home he knows and his family’s life. War is coming. And war respects no boundaries. And war leaves no survivors.
Interview with Abby J. Reed
What inspired you to write WHEN PLANETS FALL?
Several different things! I was in
the middle of a different novel at the time. It had got several requests, but
didn’t end up going anywhere. I wanted to try something completely different—in
world building, in characters, in plot. That’s when I started pouring into WHEN
PLANETS FALL. I fell in love with Breaker, his passion, and this weird red
planet called Scarlatti.
Can
you tell us a little bit about the next books in WHEN PLANETS FALL or what you
have planned for the future?
Sure! It’s currently a trilogy. I’m still working on book
2 at the moment, though I do have everything planned out. Because I have
Chronic Migraine, writing takes a long time for me. But I am really excited for
all the characters and their journeys. I think everyone will be surprised where
it ends up (enter wicked smile).
Can
you tell us a little bit about the characters in WHEN PLANETS FALL?
There are three POVS in WHEN PLANETS FALL. The main
character, Breaker, is an 18 year-old amputee who built his own prosthesis. He
will do anything to protect his younger brother. Malani is a POW with body
modification who gets pulled into Breaker’s schemes to protect his family from
the upcoming war. Luka has migraines but also is more of a
shoot-first-never-ask type of person. They were all really fun to write.
You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your
favorite author and why?
I can’t name a favorite for fiction because I have too
many. But for nonfiction—Madeleine L’Engle. Reading WALKING ON WATER was like
pouring a balm on my soul. It was the first time I realized, “oh! Somebody else
thinks like me! I’m not alone.” It was glorious.
If you could time-travel would you travel to the future or
the past? Where would you like to go and why would you like to visit this
particular time period?
We can use science to get a peek of
what the world looked like millions of years ago, so I’d want to travel way in
the future—I want to see if we ever get into space and if we thrive there. How
does humanity evolve? How do we solve problems and what problems are they? Man,
I would give anything to catch a peek.
Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat?
Or any pets?
I have two fur children! Apollo is an Irishdodle and is
my therapy dog. He cuddles me through migraines and will sit on my feet before
a major one. Athena is a goldendoodle we adopted. She’s more high-strung but
just started to give “hugs” by wrapping her head around your neck. They are my
babies and are too spoiled for words.
Thanks
for taking time out of your busy schedule to visit with us today.
Thanks so much for having me!!
