Interview with Janice Jones
What inspired you to write By Blood Sworn?
It’s actually the second book in my Dagger Chronicles series. In Her Blood is book one. After Buffy
went off the air, I wanted to see if I could write something that kept the
strong female lead. The main character is Alexa (Alex) Stone and she’s a
business owner and a woman of color. There are very few people of color leading
in the genre, aside from the late L.A. Banks’ Vampire Huntress, so I wanted
Alex to be an adult version of Buffy Summers and Damali Richards.
Can
you tell us a little bit about the next books in The Dagger Chronicles or what you have planned for the future?
Right now, I’m working on Book 3 in this series. I’m hoping
to wrap up Alex’s adventure, but I’m not sure yet. If people really get a taste
for her, I’ll keep it going. I’m also working on something that scares me a
bit: romance. No vampires or superpowered heroines, just that crazy little
thing called love. I’ll keep you posted.
Can
you tell us a little bit about the characters in By Blood Sworn?
Aside from Alex, you’ll meet Jason Stavros, up-and-comer in
the vampire world and Alex’s assignment. There’s also the Trackers, the young,
cool, new team that Alex will lead on the assignment, and our baddie extraordinaire,
Tristan Ambrose. He’s clever and never shy. Think Spike with a better haircut
and designer suits.
You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your
favorite author and why?
I have mad respect for Anne Rice.
The world of Lestat is brilliant and fun and dark. She was my inspiration when
I first started writing back in college.
If you could time-travel would you travel to the future or
the past? Where would you like to go and why would you like to visit this
particular time period?
I’d go to the past. Specifically,
back to when my mother was a child. I’d tell her what a great mother she was
going to be and that we were all better people because of her. There’s never
enough time to say everything to the people you love, so I’d like to tell her
that.
Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat?
Or any pets?
I had a Llasa Apso named, oddly
enough, Alex. He was with me through a lot of tough times and he was the best
dog in the world.
