Top chef Katrina Sherrer should have left hockey pro Marc Johansen out in the cold. That's where she’s headed if she can't change his mind. The all-star defenceman is determined to buy the family-owned Acadia Restaurant and Inn and tear it down. But the gods of blizzards and power outages have other ideas—they want to have fun. They strand Marc at the inn and Katrina in his room. Cognac, fireplaces, cold showers, wrong medication, and scones need to work their magic to prove that Marc can be more than Katrina's arch-enemy and business is not all about money.

Interview with Kirsten Paul

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?
I love fun animated pictures of people. They tend to show a major physical appearance and personality quality in a fun way that brings the person to life. I would choose a cartoony avatar.

How many hours a day do you put into your writing?
I usually try to work two hours on my writing after dinner. It is the best time for me because no one (i.e., kids and hubbie) will bother me. They’re doing their thing at this time, too!

Do you read your book reviews? If yes, do they affect what you write in the future?
I always read my book reviews, but they don’t affect what I write in the future. Reviews are subjective opinions of readers and everyone has a different perspective. I have never received a review that suggested I do something different. I respect people’s opinions, but I know what I want to write. It doesn’t change anything.

Do you leave hidden messages in your books that only a few people will find?
Fascinating but no. Must try it one day.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in The Hockey Player and the Angel?
Katrina Sherrer is the main female protagonist. She is a top chef who converted the Acadia Restaurant in the family-owned Acadia Inn to suit her cuisine and vision. But in doing so, she bankrupted it. She is now trying to save it along with her pride.
Marc Johansen is the main male protagonist. He is an all-star hockey defenseman who has suffered concussions. His hockey career may be coming to an abrupt end and he needs something big and profitable to fall back on to keep up his successful, larger-than-life ego and retain his own pride.
The other characters are Katrina’s three sisters, Ingrid, Rebeka and Annelise and Marc’s hockey buddies, Eric, Tyler and Jakob. They have fun while Katrina and Marc have their own fun along with the heartbreak.

Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?
The Hockey Player and the Angel is the first book of the Calendar Men of King Court romantic comedy series. The second book, The Detective and the Burglar is sitting on my editor’s desk. The third book, The Bartender and the Spy (tentative title) is in writing stage. I’ve also published a fast-paced and lively woman’s action/adventure (or chicklit) novel. Moses & Mac is the first book of the Vatican Archaeological Service series, featuring an up and coming female Indiana Jones character.

Do you allow yourself a certain number of hours to write or do you write as long as the words come?
I try to put in at least two hours after dinner during the week. I rarely write on the weekend but when I’m on a roll, I just keep going, ignoring anything else that needs to be done.

Do you have a certain number of words or pages you write per day?
I don’t count my writing productivity by word count or pages. Writing the first draft will be slower so less productivity. This is a given, so I take that into account. Editing/revising usually goes faster,

   What inspires you to write?
Writing is an escape for me into different worlds and characters just as reading is. I especially love to write entertaining novels that make me forgot about everything and escape.

Would you rather

Read fiction or non-fiction?
Fiction. May pick up a memoir, however, in the near future.

Read series or stand-alone?
          Either is good for me.

Read Science fiction or horror?
Science fiction. Horror keeps me awake.

Read Stephen King or Dean Koontz
Would it be wrong of me to say neither? Neither writes what I like to read.

Read the book or watch the movie?
Definitely read the book. It’s about the story or plot but also about the writing.

Read an ebook or paperback?
Right now ebook. I have no more room in my house for paperbacks.

Be trapped alone for one month in a library with no computer or a room with a computer and Wi-Fi only?
I’ll take the library. I’m from a generation that grew up without computers and internet. I could survive with a library.

Do a cross-country book store tour or blog tour online?
Blog tour online. A cross-country bookstore tour is reserved for the big-name authors who signed with powerhouse publishing houses.
