Interview
with Amy Tan
My first book, Doing Business in ASEAN, published in 2005, focused on the economic integration of the bloc. Through that process, I learned the importance of structure, discipline, and clarity in writing.
However, when I began writing my first memoir, Revisiting the Depths, published in September 2024, the biggest change was shifting my focus to connecting with my readers on a deeper level. It became more than just telling my story—it was about sharing my journey in a way that resonated with their own experiences, challenges, and emotions. This shift taught me how powerful storytelling can be as a bridge to connection and understanding.
What was an early experience where you learned that language had power?
I first realized the power of language when I was 13. During a class assignment, each student was tasked with writing and reading a poem aloud. I wrote about my father and how life had changed since he passed away a year earlier. Through my words, I brought my classmates and teacher into my world of loss, uncertainty, and the hollowness I felt after his departure.
At the end of my reading, when I looked up, I noticed that nearly everyone in the room—my classmates and even my teacher—had tears in their eyes. I had been so immersed in my own emotions and the poem that I hadn’t realized the impact my words had on them. In that moment, I understood that language has the power to transcend barriers, evoke emotions, and create a shared experience of humanity.
What one thing would you give up to become a better writer?
If I had the chance to start over, I would give up corporate life and begin writing at a younger age. While my corporate journey taught me valuable lessons and shaped my perspective, I often wonder how my writing could have evolved if I had dedicated myself to it earlier. There’s a certain freedom and authenticity in exploring creativity when you’re younger, unburdened by the demands of a career. Still, I believe every experience—corporate or otherwise—has contributed to the writer I am today, giving me a wealth of stories and insights to share.
Tell us a little about yourself? Perhaps something not many people know?
Something few people know about me is that I don’t like to cook. I admire people who find joy in creating elaborate meals, but for me, the kitchen feels more like a battleground than a creative space. If it’s quick, simple, and involves minimal cleanup, I’m all in.
Had I the opportunity to approach my childhood or teenage years differently, I would have focused on literary studies and the art of storytelling. Immersing myself in the nuances of language and narrative structure, I would have sought the guidance of a seasoned writing mentor to cultivate and refine my craft from an early stage. Such a deliberate pursuit could have offered a more structured and purposeful foundation, enabling me to navigate the complexities of writing with greater skill and clarity in adulthood.
The biggest revelation I experienced after becoming a writer is how profoundly writing serves as a mirror to the self. I thought it was all about telling stories and sharing ideas, but translating thoughts into words has an uncanny way of unearthing buried emotions, forgotten memories, and perspectives I never consciously acknowledged. It’s like uncovering hidden layers of yourself, one page at a time. Oh, and I was also surprised by how much time I spend staring at a blinking cursor!
Could you tell us a bit about your most recent book and why it is a must-read?
My most recent book, Life Lessons from Mom: For the Man You'll Become, is more than just a guide—it’s a heartfelt companion for anyone seeking to live a life of meaning, purpose, and balance. At its core is the 4-Quadrants Personal Growth Model, a framework I developed to help readers navigate life’s complexities with confidence and clarity.
The book is thoughtfully structured, with each chapter focuses on a specific topic, so readers can easily dive into what matters most to them—whether it’s navigating life stages, developing leadership skills, financial management, or exploring themes like resilience, relationships, integrity, and self-discovery. Designed to meet readers where they are, it offers timeless lessons that can be revisited at any stage of life. The ultimate goal of this book is to support readers in building a meaningful, purposeful life and thriving in every aspect of their journey.
