In this periodic table book, 20 Alchemical Wizards present Magical Elements of the Periodic Table. Each wizard wields a magical staff tipped with an element which gives them unique powers. Areg starts out Book 1 of the Alchemical Wizards by introducing the important element Argon on his element page. Thurwin rounds out the Book 1 elements by presenting facts and other fun information about the metal, Thulium on his element page. Another elemental favorite is Galoa, who represents Gadolinium. It gives her the power to control and manipulate electromagnetic waves, rendering her a formidable force in the world of technology and communication. Phova is truly magical, as Phosphorus gives her the ability to manipulate light and create illusions. She can control the intensity, color, and direction of light, allowing her to bend it to her will. The Alchemical Wizards, along with their techno-magical unicorn and dragon friends from the first 2 Magical Elements Books are the perfect group to introduce you to metals and other elements in the Periodic Table. Hopefully, the Magical Elements of this periodic table book will spark an interest in the magical and real world properties of all the metals and other elements known today. You may be surprised at how prominently they feature in our every day lives. Each element page in this book contains terms that might not be completely familiar to the reader

Interview with Sybrina Durant

What is your favorite part of the book?

My favorite part of the book are the pictures. I love the whimsical images that playfully represent the different elements of the periodic table and their everyday uses. The pictures draw the eye in and make the reader interested in what the accompanying text might have to say. The graphics also make the text more memorable.

Does your book have a lesson? Moral?

There is a lot of valuable information in this book which touches on the obligations of humans to be good stewards of the earth. Over time, we’ve discovered that things we thought were good for us turned out to be dangerous, like the effects of lead or mercury. Governments and companies are now focusing on rare earth elements and calling them “green” energy except that the mining of them is far from safe or good for mankind. There has to be a balance found with all of these things.

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

The wizards in this book came entirely from my imagination but their magical powers are based on the everyday uses of the elements from which they are derived.

Of all the characters you have created, which is your favorite and why?

I love all of the wizards but Caelkoth may be my favorite because he can control time. He can make it go slower, faster or even stop it for short periods. This helps him win fights and solve tricky problems, letting him see things happen in super slow motion. His power is derived from Caesium (Cesium). Caesium atomic clocks are highly accurate timekeeping devices used in GPS satellites and international time standards. A second is how long it takes for a certain amount of radiation to come from caesium-133. That’s why it is used in atomic clocks and even cell phones.

What character in your book are you least likely to get along with?

Oh, I get along with all of the little wizards perfectly well but Brogach may have the scariest abilities. He can control Bromine to make acid mist, create barriers that can dissolve things and make really strong blasts of heat. Bromine is extremely reactive and can evaporate to make stinky brown fumes that smell really bad. Its name literally means “stench of he-goats”.

What would the main character in your book have to say about you?

All the little wizards would say, “Thanks, Sybrina, for sharing our stories with everyone. We want all to know about our techno-magical abilities and the elements that power them.” Their motto is “No Metal – No Magic. . .and No Technology”.

Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?

This book is the third in a series which will include five books. The first 2 are “Magical Elements of the Periodic Table Presented by the Metal Horn Unicorns” and “Magical Elements of the Periodic Table Presented by the Elemental Dragons”. There will be a Wizards book 2 and the final book will be presented by the Actinide Knights and the Radioactive Goblins. Since these books are educational in nature, I’ve created activity pages, different kinds of games and other fun stuff to help kids remember the things they have learned in the books. These may be accessed at https://www.magicalptelements.com, along with links to all of my research which can be used to fact check the information in the books and to do additional personal research.
