Release Date: 02/17/15

Summary from Goodreads:

Will his kiss be enough to revive her frozen heart?

Once Upon A Time meets La Femme Nikita in GATHERING FROST, a dystopian romance from bestselling author Kaitlyn Davis that reimagines the classic fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty.

Jade was only a little girl when the earthquake struck. Before her eyes, half of New York City disappeared, replaced by a village that seemed torn out of a storybook. Horses and carriages. Cobblestone streets. A towering castle. And, above all, a queen with the magical ability to strip emotions away.

Ten years later and Jade has forgotten what it is to feel, to care...even to love. Working as a member of the queen's guard, she spends most of her time on the city wall staring at the crumbling skyscrapers of old New York. But everything changes when the queen's runaway son, Prince Asher, returns. Jade is tasked with an unusual mission--to let the Prince capture her, to make him trust her, and then to betray his secrets to the crown. In return, she'll earn her freedom. But life outside the queen's realm is more than Jade bargained for. Under Asher's relentless taunts, her blood begins to boil. Under his piercing gaze, her heart begins to flutter. And the more her icy soul begins to thaw, the more Jade comes to question everything she's ever known--and, more importantly, whose side she's really on.

My Review:

I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

Jade was taken right out of the arms of her mom when she was she a little girl by the ice queen during an earthquake that turned the world upside down. The ice queen took Jade along with a lot of other people to live with her in her castle in what is now known as old New York. The ice queen had walls built around the city to keep everyone inside and to have more control over them.

Jade was sent to live with a man that taught her how to fight and become a great warrior. When she grew up Jade became one of the queen’s guards. She was the best guard the queen had; she had never been beat another guard. Jade never made friends with any of the guards or with any of the people who lived behind the wall. Jade always kept to herself and was very lonely although she had no idea that she was lonely.

One day Jade was sent into the city outside the walls to explore the city for supplies among other things. While she was out she ran into a guy she had never met or seen in her life but she knew who he was the minute she laid eyes on him. She knew that he was the queen’s son whom everyone that lived under the queen’s rule knew as well.

When Jade made it back home and the queen found out that she had seen her son that she had been searching for, for many, many years. The queen was so happy to find out that her son was still alive. Jade being the only person she trusted she sent her back out in the city where she saw him. Jade was given orders to find him and then make him trust her somehow so that she could get him to come back home with her so that the queen could be rejoined with her son.

Jade was a real kickass kind of girl and could manipulate almost anyone into believing that she was their best and only friend. She could beat just about anyone she went up against. She was fast and always alert with her surroundings. But when she finally met up with Asher the queen’s son again and went back with him to his home it wasn’t long until Asher starting melting her heart and making her more aware of the people around her and of him.

I loved the world that Kaitlyn has created in Gathering Frost of how people can be hurt so bad that they can hide their feelings from the world and themselves. By hiding their feelings and pushing everything way down deep inside of them to the point of where they can’t feel anything else ever again and no one can break down the walls that they have built up to keep them out. But when the time is right for that person and they are ready even though they don’t know they are ready that one person walks into their lives and starts chipping away at that wall with niceness, kindness and love until that wall starts to slowly melt away. It melts as slow as that person needs it to until they are ready and are able to let that special someone in and then after a while with the help of this special person that has cracked that wall with a hole just big enough so that they can start to let others in too.

As far as I know or can remember this is the first retelling of a fairy tale that I have read. When I read the summary and knew that I had to read I didn’t know what I was in for. But I am glad that I gave it a chance. Gathering Frost may be the first retelling fairy tale that I have read but it probably is not the last and it is probably most definitely not the last book by Kaitlyn Davis that I read.

If you like fairy tales or retelling of fairy tales then you are going to love Gathering Frost. Gathering Frost is packed with action, sadness and honesty right from the very first page. Jade and Asher are two characters that you are going to want to follow around as you watch Asher melt Jades heart and make her human once again.

About the Author:
I've always been a writer. I grew up duct taping my novels together, started writing complete manuscripts in high school and studied creative writing at Johns Hopkins University. Upon graduating, I decided it was finally time to actually give my dream career a chance. So, of course, I started writing a young adult paranormal romance series -- and no, I'm not jumping on the bandwagon. I've been a true paranormal supporter for my entire life! I blame my obsession almost completely on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, my all-time favorite television show. And, before you ask: Yes, I own every season... even the post WB ones! I especially challenge anyone to watch the first three seasons and not fall in love with Angel, securing a lifelong love of vampires! Other culprits of my paranormal obsession are some of my favorite authors: JK Rowling, Raymond Feist, Meg Cabot, Richelle Mead, Lynne Ewing and Tamora Pierce.
