Ann, Not Annie
Sage Steadman
Publication date: September 20th 2017
Genres: Contemporary, Romance, Young Adult
Ann, not Annie, is tired of her nominal existence and has vowed to turn things around by dating the hottest guy in school, Jacob Waters. Easier said than done since Jacob isn’t even aware she exists. The truth is, due to Ann’s lively temper she spends more time in detention with the rest of the school rejects than she does fantasizing about Jacob Waters wearing spandex.
Her best friend and devout alien believer, Lisa, doesn’t like the changes she’s seeing in her BFF. Neither does Danny Feller, a fellow detention inmate and resident lost boy who has started keeping an extra watchful and unwanted eye on Ann.
When a chance encounter in an empty hallway changes everything, Ann finds all her dreams coming true and she is well on her way to living the perfect life she’s always wanted. But appearances aren’t always what they seem and Ann is going to have to face not just cold hard facts, but also her past.
What inspired you to write “Ann, Not Annie”?
This story was unique for me because I wasn’t inspired by anything as much as I was haunted. I literally woke up in the middle of the night having the story of Ann and her family in my head. And this happened several nights in a row where I’d try to sleep and instead be haunted by these characters and not be able to sleep until I wrote down what was coming to me.
When I first started writing down the story notes I had a notebook for each family member. So it was initially more a story about a family, but Ann’s unique struggles stood out to me the most so I wrote the story based around her.
Can you tell us a little bit about what you have planned for the future?
I have so many books I’m working on at the moment. At last count I had about 12. Four of those books I’m in the middle of finishing the first draft. I don’t talk about my projects until they are almost complete. With my first novel, “Snowflake Obsidian: Memoir of a Cutter” most of my family and friends didn’t know about it until it was published! I find it’s better for the project and easier to write it if I’m not talking about it too much and it’s recommended really for most artists to do that so they don’t lose their creative juices.
Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in “Ann, Not Annie?”
Ann is the main character. She’s in her second year in high school and her life thus far has not turned out the way she expected it to. She’s angry about stuff happening at home and she’s acting out in school as a result. Her best friend, Lisa, is her lovable quirky friend. Ann and Lisa are an absolute riot when they get together, but their relationship is growing strained as Ann starts making choices Lisa doesn’t agree with.
Jacob is the most popular guy in school. Ann is completely infatuated with him and desperate to become a part of his group.
Danny is a loner who is interested in Ann and can see that she’s struggling. He would like to help her, but he has to break down her walls in the process and it doesn’t always go well.
I think Danny was easily my favorite character to write. He’s so funny and wise I really enjoyed connecting in with that energy. Ann was fun too because she’s such a unique character, but she really can’t see how awesome she is and how she doesn’t need to change to have the life she wants. Her angry, and at times caustic and dark sense of humor, were really fun for me to tap into.
You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?
I really have so many, but I have to say that when I first read “An Abundance of Katherines” by John Green, I was hooked by the fun quirkiness of YA literature. I hadn’t read much YA lit before that and I really had no idea how amazing it could be. That book is still one of my all time favorite books.
If you could time-travel would you travel to the future or the past? Where would you like to go and why would you like to visit this particular time period?
I’d go to the past. I write historical fiction too and it would be amazing to be able to step into Victoria Era England and see what it’s all about.
I’d probably also see some musicians live. Hendrix, Zeppelin, The Beatles, just to name a few…
Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?
I did, but they’ve all crossed the rainbow bridge and broken my heart so I’m not ready to commit my heart to another future heartbreak just yet. But I really do want a pig.
