Interview with Dr Michele- Vera Yonga

Does writing energize or exhaust you?

For the most part, writing energizes me. I enjoy writing in the right environment and in the right mind frame. The few moments when writing feels exhausting is when I have to meet a tight deadline, while experiencing writer's block.”

What is the first book that made you cry?

At age 21, I read 'A thousand Splendid Suns' by Khaled Hosseini. I found myself transported to Afghanistan, living the life of the main character Miriam. I cried with every difficulty she faced, and with every little joy she experienced. This was the first time I recall crying profusely while reading a book. Prior reads had been joyful pieces.”

How did publishing your first book change your process of writing?

"It showed me how much revision is part of the process. I used to think the first draft had to be perfect, but publishing my first book taught me that great writing happens in the editing stage. This realization has taken off a lot of pressure."

What do you owe the real people upon whom you base your characters?

To be clear, this is my first book series, and the characters introduced are fictitious. In the future, I may consider basing my characters on real people. However, to the real people who identify with the figures in my book, I owe recognition and understanding. I extend a hand of fellowship for our shared experiences, and hope that this piece speaks to them and helps them navigate every form of self doubt they experience. My goal is for them to feel empowered to rise above their impostor symptoms using the 8 strategies proposed to uncover and shine through their self doubt.”

Where did your love of books/storytelling/reading/writing/etc. come from?

My love for reading, storytelling, and writing started at a very tender age. I remember how my elementary/primary school teacher taught us the alphabet in a phonetics song. After memorizing the song, I challenged myself with every opportunity to form the sounds of every word I came across. Every correct pronunciation felt exhilarating. Then came the family spelling games where I almost always won despite being the youngest. This fueled my love for reading and writing in school and in an official capacity. My drive to write books came later in life, when I felt the need to express myself and break free of any debilitating self doubt. Helping others do the same keeps me motivated.”

What do you like to read in your free time?

I love to read self help non fiction books. Currently, I am reading Metabolical by Robert Lustig to learn all about food, and how I can help my family and I use food as medicine, so that we don’t have to “eat medicine as food.”

Can you share some stories about people you met while researching this book?

While researching this book, I came across colleagues and strangers who helped me better understand the topic, and identify the need to put out this piece for the masses.

I encountered an established leader, who also struggles with impostor syndrome whose insight shed light on the high prevalence of the phenomenon, and made me realize that I was not alone. That just like me, there are others out there who need this topic discussed and addressed openly.

I also encountered a fellow colleague who had never heard about this syndrome, who was intrigued to learn more about it.

I found out about Valerie Young, the co-founder of the Impostor Institute who has dedicated several years of her clinical psychologist career learning about impostor syndrome and helping people overcome it. She coined the five types of impostor Syndrome.

Finally, I came across several well known individuals in the society who have acknowledged dealing with self doubt, and provide encouragement to others dealing with the same. Foreample former first lady Michele Obama and the renowned actress Viola Davis.”

Why did you choose to write in your particular field or genre?  If you write more than one, how do you balance them?

I write in the non-fiction self help genre. My professional background as a healthcare provider and my personal experiences empower me with the voice to share with the audience on topics that affect both our physical and mental health.”

How do you begin writing a new book? What challenges come with it?

First, a topic needs to speak to me. I have to feel burdened to talk about the topic. Once the topic becomes clear in my mind, I then dive into research. Every idea is jotted. Every revelation in the middle of my sleep is noted. Once the right environment and mindframe is created, the writing journey begins.

Challenges that come with beginning to write a book is finetuning the angle to take on one’s identified topic. Also, it can be easy to deviate from the intended voice. However, reaching out to an expert for advice in a timely fashion can help mitigate both challenges.”

Share a place that inspires you to write

My ideal writing space is airy and quiet, with only natural/background sounds such as a ticking clock or watch; chirping birds, water waves, whistling winds, and swaying tree branches and leaves. The sitting arrangement must have a comfortable seat with a good back support and facing a table that is free of clutter.”
