Excerpt:

Chapter 7

Special Agent Mikiko Shikibu opened Special Agent Evelyn Blackwood’s door abruptly. “Hey, Evelyn, you’re needed in the large conference room immediately.”

Evelyn looked at her computer. “I don’t see anything on my calendar.”

This just came up,” Mikiko said, seeming a little out of breath. “Deputy Director Chisholm and Section Chief Appleton are waiting.”

Do you know what this is about?” Evelyn asked. The last time Deputy Director Chisholm was in a briefing was when there was the suspicion that rogue Russian agents had influenced several election results. “She doesn’t typically get involved in briefs unless there’s a pretty serious situation.”

Mikiko just shook her head and led the way.

As Evelyn walked into the briefing room, three well- known faces appear on a large screen covering the wall.

Thank you for joining us, ladies,” Section Chief Appleton said with an annoyed tone. “As I was saying, who can tell me who these three individuals are?”

Jason Jimenez out of New York, Mike aka ‘Mikey’ Romano out of Chicago, and the notorious Victor aka ‘Big Vick’ Ward out of Los Angeles. They are suspected to be the heads of the largest crime syndicates in the US,” said an eager analyst from the other side of the briefing room.

Appleton continued, “The fact that these three thugs are missing isn’t necessarily something to be bothered with on its own. In fact, I’m kind of glad that someone is doing our job for us. The more concerning thing is that we’ve received intelligence that a new crime boss is moving to town. We believe that this new player is going to make a move to run the criminal organization in much of the western world.”

Appleton paused for dramatic effect before continuing. “Few people can pull this off under the radar. To do so, you need a global network, business fronts to clean your money, and massive legitimate and illegitimate influence to discreetly push things through.”

Appleton stopped and flashed up a photo of one man. He looked tall, fit, and lean. The image showed him walking in a suit with sunglasses and talking on the phone.

This was clearly a surveillance photo, pulled from a file probably filled with other information. Next to that picture, a second photograph appeared on the screen, a close-up of just the man’s face. The man appeared to be in his late thirties, with intelligent eyes, ebony skin, and oddly enough, a big charming smile. The picture looked like it belonged on a professional bio, not a case file.

We received a tip that this is our guy.” Appleton finished his grand reveal.

Who is that?” asked Cramer.

Someone who flies completely under the radar,” Appleton replied. “This is Ori Clayborn, Founder, and CEO of the Singularity Group.”

Deeply Rooted Dreams

Blurb:

This bold and compelling sequel is an evocative page-turner on the journey to a better future.

Since her encounter with Ori years ago, Jessica, an investigative journalist, has continued her mission to print the truth that the world needs to hear. Her pursuit has led her to meet with a source, Zach Carver, a leading mind at Singularity Group. The meeting goes awry, and Jessica awakens to find that she has a gap in time and memory and that Zach is now missing.

What happened? Who is responsible? And how can she help Zach? It is imperative that Jessica find out, and to her surprise, Ori has reappeared to help her do just that.

Malik, an intelligent and inventive young man, is determined to find a way to overcome the virus that has impacted the world. When he crosses paths with powerful people at Confidence Biotech, the leading treatment and contact tracing company, they take an unusual interest in him. Then, all of a sudden, they paint Malik as public enemy number one, forcing him to go on the run.

What do they want from him, and does this mean that he is close to discovering something they couldn't?

Deeply Rooted Dreams is the second installment of The Rewired Series, unveiling more of the universal trial that Ori alluded to in The Recruiter. Alexander Mukte's second novel creates an even more intricate world, striking an engaging balance of mystery and wonder.

Interview with Alexander Mukte

Do you ever wish you were someone else? Who?

While I wouldn’t trade lives with anyone, I enjoy thinking about what I admire about other people and the attributes that would be fun to take for a spin. My favorites are the creative versatility of Leonardo Da Vinci and the generosity of Oprah… Just giving everyone in the audience a free car.

What did you do on your last birthday?

Birthdays aren’t too big to me, so we keep it simple unless it’s a milestone. We also have a newborn baby and are putting a lot of our energy there and towards our “big kid.” My wife is nursing the baby, and I cook our meals and keep her fueled. We did a day of no cooking for my birthday, ordering donuts in the morning and dinner from my favorite little neighborhood Italian restaurant. It was perfect!

What part of the writing process do you dread?

Ugh… I think that I dread reading through the finished book right before we publish. By that time, the muse has moved on to something new, and the analytical side of my brain starts to poke, prod, and cause doubt.

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it?

Some days the words come slower than others. I just don’t give in and work towards my daily goal to write a thousand words. What I’ve done to make those words come easier is that after I’m finished hitting my writing goal for the day, I’ll write the title for the next day’s scene. I’ve found it really helps to jumpstart my brain for each session.

Tell us about your latest release.

I began writing my debut novel after the birth of my first son, imagining what I’d like for him to see in the world. This led to a story featuring a Black business leader doing good through empowering small businesses, promoting financial freedom, and countering issues like mass incarceration. I wrote this story to be a fast-paced mystery that would stretch the imagination and hopefully stretch readers’ perception of what’s possible.

The Recruiter is the story of Ori Clayborn, the visionary leader of a multi-billion-dollar corporation. He has principles and a way with people. Leslie is his in-house counsel and right-hand woman. When there is an attempt on Ori’s life, the two are caught up in a whirlwind of events and forced to go on the run, unsure who to trust. The tale unfolds quickly as the characters work to uncover why anyone would want to hurt Ori.

It’s actually the first book of The Rewired Series, and I released book two, Deeply Rooted Dreams, a few months ago. It brings back many of the characters, several years in the future, as a virus is plaguing humanity. The Recruiter definitely leaves some unanswered questions, so I didn’t want readers to have to wait too long for the next installment.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Alexander had an active imagination his whole life, but it wasn’t until the birth of his son that he began putting the stories in his mind on paper. He wanted to be an example of someone pursuing his passion, dreaming big, and taking chances.

Alexander loves people, their stories, and their backgrounds as well as what shapes them, how they think, and what they dream about. He has a passion for learning and is known by most as an intensely curious person who eagerly soaks up anything and everything he can. He dreamt of a career that allowed him to learn new things every day. In writing, he has found a life that allows him to do just that.

After graduating with a degree in business, Alexander volunteered in the U.S. Peace Corps where he aided in creating sustainable small business ventures in Central America. Before taking this leap of faith, Alexander did Business Development and Consulting for large domestic and international companies. These experiences weave themselves into the characters, places and stories he creates.

An avid traveler, Alexander enjoys exploring new places with his family. He was raised in Southeastern Arizona, and now calls Georgia home, along with his wife and two sons.

The Recruiter is Alexander’s first novel, though perhaps the 39th in his mind. We hope you enjoy it, and Deeply Rooted Dreams, as much as we have.
