Review Tour + #Giveaway: The Demons Rising by Andrew S. M. Berger @GoddessFish

THE DEMONS RISING

by Andrew S. M. Berger

GENRE: Fantasy

BLURB:

A heart blackened by time, now reserved for hatred and despair. Vengeance—achievable through reaching the afterlife and gaining ultimate power—is the only way to satisfy an unquenchable thirst for justice. But, when a resurgence of hope blurs the line between retribution and madness, the blackened heart seeks to preserve what beauty is left within its grasp.

Neeksus had hopes of life, until death seemed the only path. A voice beckons him to commit a final atrocious act: he must take the lives of as many individuals as possible, as well as his own. Once in the underworld, all will be made clear.

A boy named Gabriel suits the requirements for Neeksus to attain his goal, residing in an earlier time and among space separate from the Milky Way. This boy holds a single hope: a girl dear to him, belonging to a fate worse than death.

Neeksus can save her, but only if the boy kills and collects countless souls. Many will die, who will be sacrificed in Neeksus's quest for revenge…

 Excerpt:

From my birth, my mind sped on a track leading to one moment. I saw my beloved, as I sat crying by her bedside, her protruding belly a sign of our attempt at creation. A voice reminiscent of my beloved spoke of revenge, all I needed to do was listen. She spoke of a forbidden ritual: if I followed certain steps I could destroy not only the creator of the underworld, but the creator of life. I told myself it was madness and chose to ignore the voice. The tear-soaked nights added up to yearlong fissures within my heart. Nothing remained for me in life and overtime I submitted to the madness. Corporeal existence made me into an imp of a man, and that is how destiny shaped me. The hands dragged me deeper into the catastrophic depths of fiery despair while shaping me. It was as if the flames from the explosion still licked at my body. I felt like a comet entering Earth’s atmosphere, burning away bit by bit to reveal the truth within.

My mind tried its best to keep up with my descent. It fragmented, the force moulding me taking it for its own greedy purpose. My memories of life were gone as I felt tiny toes touch ground. I obtained a universally used method of speech, but otherwise the feelings of emptiness welled within me. I heard screams sneaking beneath the door to this shoddy, dimly lit room. Every basalt rock held mirror-like qualities.

A crackling robotic voice spoke overhead. “Welcome to your new home. Your designation is Neeksus. Your past lives no longer matter here. Your crimes in your most recent life have earned you a sentence of approximately 205,930,080,792 seconds to be spent toiling on the 1,838,504,130,040,750th layer of the afterlife. These numbers will mean little to you but be aware once your sentence has ended you will be reborn around the time of your most recent death in what we hope will be a rehabilitated soul.

My Review:

The Demons Rising hooked me from the first page. I couldn’t turn those pages fast enough to see what lay ahead. The Demons Rising is about going to the underworld and not wanting to stay. It is about collecting as many souls as possible in order to get what you want.

The suspense not to mention the fighting for more souls and to save the one you love from being taken from you is enough to keep those pages turning. It is about doing whatever you have to do to save the one you love.

The more I read the more I wanted to know how it all was going to turn out in the end. I can just see it all playing out in my mind as if I was standing right there with all the characters in each and every scene. I loved the world that was created for The Demons Rising. The descriptions were written so well making it that much easier to see it all.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

My desire to write is an extension of my personal love for colorful and imaginative storytelling. Along the way, I developed a longing to discover a path to reclaim the world which once held so much beauty. Opening the minds of the masses seems the only way. My mind is a dark sanctuary, which may be of benefit.

I live on Vancouver Island. My greatest influences are The Lord of the Rings by Tolkien, The Chronicles of Narnia by C S. Lewis, and The Gunslinger series by Stephen King. Plus the works of Akira Toriyama.

My free time is composed of spending time with my wife and son, getting out and seeing the world, and playing music. With everything I strive towards, making time to write was difficult, but I want more. I attended the school of imagination and graduated top of my class. I also have a certificate in bookkeeping, so I know about good books—even if those books are numerical non-fiction. Seriously speaking, I began writing in my high school creative writing class, after being told I had unrivaled creativity. The desire and journey to be one of the greats had begun.

Thank you for sharing your review of The Demons Rising, this sounds like a thrilling read and I am looking forward to it.
Andrew, if given the chance, would you prefer to have this story made into a movie or an animated film?

Thanks for the question Bea LaRocca,

If I had to pick, I'd say animated. In beauteous detail, the eccentricities of the more sci-fi or fantasy aspects can find better balance through animation. Which is not to say live-action couldn't be accomplished, pending the right team to back it.
