Excerpt:
“Happy New Year, sweetheart,” he says, his words slurred from champagne.
“Sure,” I say, letting my eyes close. “Can’t even imagine anything happy about it.”
“Cynical,” he teases, but I don’t have the energy to argue with him.
Lifting my head, I sit back in my chair, and scan a look over him. Will’s hair looks like he just rolled out of bed, but that wasn’t how he looked when he’d brought me home. Alcohol and stress has had him raking his fingers through it until now it stands on end.
Will is a handsome guy, though lacking in any fashion sense. He’s my ride or die friend, has been since middle school, and I adore him.
“Are you going home?” I ask, noticing his eyes blink slower, or maybe my eyes are blinking slowly.
“No. Since you begged me to drink away the old year with you, you’re going to have to let me sleep on your couch.”
I was hoping he’d say that. I don’t want him to leave. Tonight, I want the company.
“Do you think she’s home?” I ask.
Will leans his elbow onto the table, resting his head in his palm, and he watches me. I move to mimic him, placing my elbow on the table, and my head in my hand.
“She’s home,” he says. “I’m just afraid that maybe she’s not alone.”
I reach for his other hand, and lace our fingers together.
“You know your living situation makes no sense, right?” I say.
“I know that more than anyone,” he admits.
“I mean, who lives with their ex?”
Interview with Bernadette Marie
Have you read anything that made you think differently about fiction?
I don’t know that I have. I love fiction. I love the creativity of fiction. I am uncomfortable with gory fiction, but I appreciate it all the same.
How do you select the names of your characters?
Most often, I use a name randomizer until I find a name that just fits.
Do you hide any secrets in your books that only a few people will find?
I do this all the time. In my last book, Liz’s Road Trip, I left some easter eggs from other books. But I do put in personal things all the time. For example, most often when my characters have pizza, they have a sausage, mushroom, and green pepper pizza--this was my dad’s favorite. I also add in opinions and write them off as my character’s.
What was your hardest scene to write?
This book is a fun loving book, so there weren’t too many scenes that were hard to write. I suppose making the main characters “want” someone else. But that was the point.
Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?
I have written many series and trilogies. In those, each book can stand on their own, but they are so much better all strung together. As for building my body of work, I have a lot of stand alones, which Secret Admirer Pact is just that, a stand alone.
What were your goals and intentions in this book, and how well do you feel you achieved them?
My goal was to have a feel good, Valentine romance, and I feel as if that’s exactly what my readers will get.
What inspired you to write Secret Admirer Pact?
Secret Admirer Notes and those conversation hearts say Valentine’s Day to me. I was setting out to write a fun little story that would encompass the goal of having someone for that greeting card holiday. I’m also a sucker for friends to lovers.
Can you tell us a little bit about the next books in Secret Admirer Pact or what you have planned for the future?
I am currently writing two more rom coms and a new romance / women’s fiction book which will all be stand alone titles.
Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Secret Admirer Pact?
Monique is a fashionista who never wears a coat in cold weather. She loves her bling and adores her best friend Wil. Wil has a wonderful understanding of women. With two mothers and three sisters, he has a patience for Monique that perhaps most wouldn’t. This duo wants the best for each other--only it’s taken a lifetime to realize the best is one another.
What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
I enjoyed the friendship between my main characters. I love writing characters that have a history. I just think you get a whole different kind of story.
