Interview with Tabitha Peattie

What inspired you to write Tainted Legacy?

I wrote this book 8 years ago after I left school. I had a notebook of ideas and this one felt very relevant to me at the time. I was suffering from incredible pain because of my Multiple Sclerosis. Writing this gave me the opportunity to escape. I wrote the series without planning on ever publishing. However, my books became cathartic for me.

Then I had a relapse again at the beginning of this year and I was in and out of hospital. At the time I couldn’t find a single book that I wanted to read. I desperately wanted to see a female character overcome adversity. I needed to feel friendship and love. So, in desperation, I picked up my own books and binge read the first one in one evening. I had forgotten how much I loved Ava and her friends along with the community of the Gifted. At 2 O’clock in the morning, totally book drunk, I sent my manuscript around to my family and everyone insisted that I needed to share it with the world.

Can you tell us a little bit about the next books in the Ash Academy series or what you have planned for the future?

In the next book we see a lot more romance and action. Ava and Demetri uncover the secrets of the Gifted community that the other houses want to keep hidden. With the help of their friends they start to take on more responsibilities and begin to see the world for what it truly is. Along the way you will meet new friends and enemies. Ava and Demetri struggle with the pressures of their positions and the difference between love and magic. As the stakes get higher throughout the series you see the characters and how they get stronger to keep up with the action. Well at least most of the characters become stronger!

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Tainted Legacy?

Ava is the main character. She has grown up in a very sheltered environment and completely hidden from the world of the Gifted. In the bubble that her parents have created for her you see her naivety and her kindness. Then she must leave the loving warmth of her parents. This is a major shock and you see how she struggles to find herself. It is hard to be kind when the rest of the world is telling you, you are evil.

Demetri had a completely different childhood. He struggled living with his abusive uncle who adopted him. At school he is the man. All the boys want to be his friend and the girls are desperate to be his girlfriend. However, he struggles to open up to those around him as he has the weight of the biggest secret on his shoulders.

Then around Ava and Demetri they have a close group of friends in Sky, Skit and Billy. Their unending support and kindness is what gets Ava and Demetri through the struggles that the world of the Gifted presents them.

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

For me this is something that changes every week. Largely because I read about 4 books a week and there are sooo many good authors out there. Recently I read Kelly St Clare’s  ‘Fantasy Frost’ series and I adored that. But, I do think honourable mentions need to go to Jamie Mcguire, Kresley Cole and Kristen Ashley. And even then, I feel as if I have missed about 40 other good authors.

If you could time-travel would you travel to the future or the past? Where would you like to go and why would you like to visit this particular time period?

OK, I am going to nerd out right now. I would love to go back to the Augustan era. That was a time of amazing women (if not slightly frightening) from Cleopatra, who uses her sexuality to rule, to Augustus’ own wife Livia who used poison and subterfuge to rule the kingdom as she wanted. We think that in 2017 we are so modern and feminist. Go back 2000 years and you will see a number of women who never let anyone tell them they couldn’t do something just because they were a woman.

Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

Yes, I have a little working cocker spaniel called Pikachu. She is the cleverest little dog in the world. We have done obedience competitions at Crufts and she can do some awesome dog dances. Recently she even did a handstand to command.

Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to visit with us today.

About the Author
I have been writing for 6 years and have written a number of books. I am really excited to start publishing these and see if others love my books like I do. I'm influenced by so many authors and books that I couldn't list them all the! All my stories have a theme of overcoming what nature has given you as this is something I have really experienced in life. I have struggled with MS since I was 17. This is something which has given me the strength and the experience to be able to write about the lowest lows and the highest highs.
