A chilling tale of loss, tragedy, psychic warfare, and eternal love. Amber Macklin’s world is cruelly shattered when she loses her baby girl three months after her husband’s sudden death. Her cousin, Bryce, comes to her rescue, moving her into his home for fear she will kill herself from the grief. He provides solace and a shoulder to cry on, and he has loved her as more than a cousin for a long time. Amber and Bryce soon discover they are not blood relatives, which opens the door for romance as he pulls her through her darkest hours. When Mike, a college friend of Bryce’s, stops by to visit, Amber senses a deadly secret behind his nice guy persona. She has a frightening dream that Mike is trying to kill her and recurring sleepwalking episodes where she draws detailed pictures of him torturing her. Deeply troubled, Bryce uses his ability to astral travel to investigate Mike and uncover his terrifying past. Mike has had his eye on Amber for some time, and when he learns that Bryce and Amber have become lovers, he is furious. Mike abducts Amber and takes her to his rural Georgia hideaway, and Bryce must rely on his astral abilities to track her down. But will he be too late?

Interview with Laura Simmons

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Tough Karma: A Race Against Time?

Bryce Decker is the strong protective type and has been secretly in love with Amber Macklin for most of his life. They grew up as first cousins until they learned that they were not blood relatives.  She was always the one he couldn’t have. They are lifelong best friends and confide in each other and truly enjoy each other’s company. He keeps her grounded and she deeply appreciates him. Finding out there is no blood connection opens the door for a beautiful romance. However, they have a rough and dangerous road ahead of them when Bryce’s friend, Mike Collins, abducts Amber and Bryce must find and rescue her.

Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?

The first draft of my next (and third) book, Dark Karma: Sword of Vengeance is currently being reviewed by two beta readers. This new story falls into the genre of Fantasy Paranormal Romance. As the title indicates, there is a cursed item and evil villains that make life difficult for our hero and heroine who have recently fallen in love. I’m hoping to publish Dark Karma later this year, it just depends on my beta readers’ critiques and how much they think needs to be changed or expanded.

There will be a fourth book too. I don’t have a well thought out plot yet, however, I’m writing segments of characters conversations and things I know will need to be included in it. I have to do research on witchcraft and spell casting and I’m excited about it.

How long would you say it takes you to write a book?

It takes about a year and a half to write each book. I work a full-time job and write when I can.

What is your favorite childhood book?

A Wrinkle in Time. I loved that story when I was young, but when I read it as an adult, it didn’t have the same appeal.

What was the hardest scene from Tough Karma to write?

The hardest scene I’ve had to write is Amber’s abduction. I didn’t listen to the little voice in my head and wrote that scene in the first draft with something different and easier. My beta reader didn’t like what I had written for Amber and said I needed to change it. I was never truly comfortable with what I initially wrote for her and eventually wrote what the little voice suggested in the first place. I was stalled on it for three months because I had accepted a promotion at work which turned out to be disastrous for me, and I was sick with stress until I quit. While on sabbatical and looking for another job, I was able to focus and rewrite the scene and I was much happier with it. I have taken that lesson to heart and when the little voice starts to speak, I no longer question it; even if it seems like a crazy idea!

What made you want to become a writer?

I’ve wanted to write a book since I was a child. I can articulate things much better through writing than explaining them verbally.

Just for fun

(a Favorite song:  All I Ask sung by Barbara Streisand

(b Favorite book:  I don’t have one. I like many books and whenever I read one which I feel warrants five stars, it becomes my favorite until I read the next five star book.

(c Favorite movie:   Saturday Night Fever. I can watch this movie again and again and never tire of it.

(d Favorite tv show:  Shark Tank

(e Favorite Food:  Pizza

(f Favorite drink:  Rum and Coke

(g Favorite website:  Amazon – I love online shopping.

Thanks so much for visiting with us today!

About the Author

I enjoy reading books on psychic phenomena and all things metaphysical. Most of my life I've been fascinated with astral travel, dreams, the ability to see the future, and reincarnation. I've wanted to write a book since I was a child, it was the first thing I can ever remember saying I wanted to do when I grow up. I love creating worlds in my mind and writing about them. My best days are when my characters decide to have lively conversations and I type them fast and furious.
