Guest Post:
Heroine inspiration: Dita von Teese!
Hello, and thanks for having me here today! In honor of the release of my new contemporary romance, Bump and Grind, I want to talk about the inspiration for this story, and more specifically, the inspiration for my heroine, Daisy Bishop.
Daisy is a single mom (something I don’t think we see enough of in romance) and a part-time burlesque dancer. She works as an office manager for a real estate company, but is all the while performing in amateur burlesque gigs, hoping to get a big break and be able to do it full-time for a living. She works a day job while she pursues her dream. (In a way, not so different than what I do as an author, except I have more cellulite than Daisy and I can’t dance.)
Many people think of burlesque as the same thing as stripping, but that’s not the case. There is a whole subculture around burlesque that involves vintage fashion, retro design, music of the fifties and sixties, and an emphasis on concealing a little rather than revealing everything that I find very sexy.
The inspiration for Daisy, a woman with a vision of vintage fashion and sexy, sassy striptease, is the popular modern-day burlesque artist Dita von Teese. Dita is a one-woman business empire: designer, singer, dancer, and burlesque star. She’s also known as the ex-wife of shock rocker Marilyn Manson, but let me assure you, he is NOT the inspiration for Daisy’s hero. No, I went in quite the other direction with Henry Stanton, an uptight businessman with a troubled past who struggles to accept the free-spirited, risqué, style that Daisy represents. But Henry is an all-right guy, and when his friend uploads an embarrassing video of Daisy and Henry that goes viral and causes Daisy to lose her job, he can’t watch her and her son suffer. Despite his better judgment, he steps in and that is where the fun begins.
Me, I love the fashion. Below are a couple of pictures of Dita von Teese in her personal life. (As you can see, she lives the retro lifestyle 24/7. So what do you think about burlesque? Do you appreciate the fashions? And do you think it’s sexier to conceal a little bit than to reveal everything, or are you a let-it-all-hang out kind of girl? Leave a comment and let me know.
