Can Dreams Come True? Krysten Lindsay HagerPublication date: March 20th 2018
Genres: Contemporary, Romance, Young Adult
Cecily has always had a huge crush on singer Andrew Holiday and she wants to be an actress, so she tags along when her friend auditions for his new video. However, the director isn’t looking for an actress, but rather the girl next door—and so is Andrew. Cecily gets a part in the video and all of Andrew’s attention on the set. Her friend begins to see red and Cecily’s boyfriend is seeing green—as in major jealousy. A misunderstanding leaves Cecily and her boyfriend on the outs and Andrew hopes to pick up the pieces as he’s looking for someone more stable in his life than the models he’s dated. Soon Cecily begins to realize Andrew understands her more than her small-town boyfriend—but can her perfect love match really be her favorite rock star?
Interview with Krysten Lindsay Hager
Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Can Dreams Come True?
Cecily is the main character and
she’s in high school and wants to be an actress, but she is a bit of an
introvert. She loves music and really connects to Andrew Holiday’s songs so
she’s excited at the chance to meet him, but also worries he won’t be what she
thinks he’s like.
Andrew is the singer/songwriter and
writes very vulnerable lyrics that really connect with his fans. He’s down to
earth despite his fame and finds he’s getting overwhelmed by the music
business.
Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have
planned for the future?
I’m working on the second book in
the Cecily Taylor Series. In the next book she will be going to New York City
to see Andrew and do her first big modeling job—which she’s a nervous wreck
over. She also finds some distance between her and her best friend who is
dating a guy who isn’t a great boyfriend choice. Cecily worries speaking her
mind on that will cause her to lose her friend.
How
long would you say it takes you to write a book?
Each book has been different. The shortest
amount of time has been a few months, but some have taken years.
What
is your favorite childhood book?
I loved the book, Just As Long As We’re Together by Judy Blume.
I read it in the sixth grade and just
really connected with it.
If
you could spend the day with one of the characters from Can Dreams Come True who would it be? Please tell us why you chose
this particular character, where you would go and what you would do.
I think it’d be interesting to go somewhere
and talk to Andrew and find out what his life is really like. He loves writing
music and performing, but the fame side of things is getting to overwhelm him
and I think it’d be great to hear about what inspire his song lyrics.
What
was the hardest scene from Can Dreams
Come True to write?
The scenes where Cecily feels uncomfortable
with her boyfriend (from the beginning of the book) talking to his ex and
blowing off her concerns about it. I felt a little queasy writing that because
I could feel her emotions of insecurity and uncertainty on it.
What
made you want to become a writer?
I love reading and always wanted to write
something that someone could escape with when they’re having a bad day. I love
creating worlds and new characters.
