Interview with Author C.T. Fleck

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?

I would have to say a blobfish. It's an underrated animal. It’s strange, horrifying, hilarious, and oddly adorable; all at the same time.

How many hours a day do you put into your writing?

Well, it varies. I have a job, and I’m constantly trying to juggle that, my writing, a social life, and the things I do to relax. The most I’ve written for was five hours, and the least was zero. So usually, It’s somewhere between those two numbers.

Do you read your book reviews? If yes, do they affect what you write in the future?

Yes. It’s important to remember, though, that no matter what you do in life, you’re never going to please everyone. There’s going to be people out there that don’t like what you do, and that’s alright. Constructive criticism, however, should always be welcome.

Do you leave hidden messages in your books that only a few people will find?

If I tell you, then they wouldn’t stay hidden.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Thad Saves the Galaxy?

Well, there is a lot of them. So, I’ll focus on the ones that play a bigger part in this particular book. Thad is the main character. He always tries to do the right thing, but he is kind of bad at it. Zinka is an Aldinian. She is clear headed and focused but she’s not above making a joke at Thad's expense from time to time. Danny is Thad's best friend. He is carefree and generally just has a big heart. Derask is the antagonist. He is a jerk. Bubba is his lackey. He has all the worst traits that a human can have; including, but not limited to, racism, homophobia, and sexism. Pangaea is tough, blunt, but also very loyal to the people she’s close to. Tik is a Demerian. He comes off as serious and level headed. At least, until he gets high. That is just a small amount of the cast.

Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?

I plan on finishing this series. I’m not sure how many books that will be, but I’m not going to move on to the next without finishing this one. After this, I do have a couple ideas. One is for a stand alone, and the second is for another series. I haven’t really finished thinking them through. Like I said, my primary focus is on this series.

Do you allow yourself a certain number of hours to write or do you write as long as the words come?

It’s not a good idea to force yourself or to cut yourself off. That being said, I just write when something comes to me, and I stop when I’m out of ideas.

Do you have a certain number of words or pages you write per day?

Nope. If I don’t have anything than staring at a computer screen isn’t going to help. It's just going to give me a headache.

What inspires you to write?

Extremely overactive imagination.

Would you rather

Read fiction or non-fiction?
Fiction. One benefit of reading is an escape to another world. You can’t do that if your reading about your own world. Even if it’s from another’s perspective, though it can be enlightening, it doesn’t give me the escapism that fiction does.

Read series or stand-alone?
Series. They give you more time with characters you’ve grown to love.

Read Science fiction or horror?
Science fiction. It captures my attention more.

Read Stephen King or Dean Koontz?
Stephen King. The man's phenomenal at what he does.

Read the book or watch the movie?
Book. They have a better grasp on what the author intended. Movies will add stuff and get rid of other sections.

Read an ebook or paperback?
Paperback. I have to go with the classic, but I also acknowledge the many benefits of an ebook.

Be trapped alone for one month in a library with no computer or a room with a computer and Wi-Fi only?
Computer and Wi-Fi. That way I can contact someone for help. Being trapped anywhere, regardless of what’s around you, is generally a bad thing. I know. I take the fun out of the ‘would you rather’ game.

Do a cross-country book store tour or blog tour online?
Well, the cross-country one sounds fun, and I’d like to do it one day, but the blog tour is much more convenient, and allows me to continue my work from the comfort of my home.

About the Author

C.T. Fleck is the pen name of Corey Hofecker. After dropping out of college, for the second time, he discovered the joys that are inherent in both reading and writing, and that his previous distaste of said subjects was just a lack of freedom to read and write what he truly wanted. Being a firm believer that there is beauty in the absurd, he quickly became obsessed with the sci-fi genre. In it he saw the vast possibilities and the probability of how weird our universe can get. Corey lives in rural West Virginia where he occupies his time with reading, writing, video games, and tabletop RPGs. He is an unashamed feminist of sorts and an avid supporter of LGBTQ+ rights.
