In The Do-Over, a teenage girl gets the chance to redo her past in this smart and charming YA novel by the author of When Life Gives You Demons, Jennifer Honeybourn.
Emelia has always wanted to fit in with the A crowd. So, when Ben, the hottest guy in school, asks her out, she chooses him over Alistair, her best friend—even after he confesses his feelings to her.
Six months later, Emilia wonders how her life would have been different if she’d chosen Alistair instead. Haunted by her mistake, she finds a magical solution that promises to rectify the past. As a result, everything in her life is different.
Different, but not better.
What happens if her second chance is her only chance to make things right?
Interview with Jennifer Honeybourn
For
those interested in exploring the subject or theme of your book,
where should they start?
The idea
for THE DO-OVER sparked for me from the movie THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT
and the idea that if you change one thing about your life, it can
have an effect on every other area of your life. So, that would be a
good movie (if kind of dark) movie to watch if you’re interested in
the idea of how your past informs your present.
How did
you become involved with the subject or theme of your book?
I’ve
always been interested in the decisions a person makes during their
life — even small, seemingly inconsequential decisions — and how
those decisions can take you in an entirely different direction than
expected (and into an entirely different life). And what would life
be like if you’d made a different choice.
What
were your goals and intentions in this book, and how well do you feel
you achieved them?
My goal
when I’m writing any book is to entertain, to make the reader laugh
and just escape for a little while. Whether I achieved that or not I
guess is up to each reader and whether my style/this book appeals to
them.
Anything
you would like to say to your readers and fans?
I am so
thankful for every reader who picks up one of my books. It’s such a
privilege to get to live my dream and I really am grateful for every
person who takes the time to read something I have written. Those
readers and fans are the reason I get to keep living my dream.
What
did you enjoy most about writing this book?
It was
really fun to think about what Emelia’s life would look like if she
had chosen Alistair instead of Ben and to figure out the different
ripple effects that one decision could have on her life. This was a
tough book to find my way into initially — I usually don’t have a
problem with the beginning of a story — but once I figured out what
I wanted to do, the rest came a lot more naturally.
Can you
tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned
for the future?
I’ve
been focusing on middle grade in the past year (my debut middle grade
ESCAPE ROOM: THORN HOUSE was released in 2019 under my pseudonym J.E.
Hailstone). I’ve written a few other middle grade manuscripts and
I’m also halfway through another YA, so hopefully there will be
more books from me on the shelves soon.
How
long have you been writing?
I’ve
been writing, on and off, since I was a kid. Being a writer was
always my dream but I didn’t get really serious about writing YA
until I was in my early 30s and I didn’t publish my first book —
WESLEY JAMES RUINED MY LIFE — until I was 40. So, to put it another
way, I’ve been writing a long time!
Can you
tell us a little bit about the characters in THE DO-OVER
Emelia is
the main character in THE DO-OVER. When the story begins, she is
friends with Alistair but when Ben, the hot/popular guy begins to pay
attention to her, she chooses him — and the chance to be popular —
over Alistair. Six months down the line, she’s pretty sure she made
the wrong decision, but she’s lost her chance with Alistair.
Fortunately, she finds a magical solution to rectify the past, but
things don’t turn out as she expected them to.
If you
could spend the day with one of the characters from THE DO-OVER who
would it be? Please tell us why you chose this particular character,
where you would go and what you would do.
I would
spend the day with Violet, Emelia’s friend, and we would hang out
with her hedgehog, Peter. I love Violet — she’s a bit prickly on
the outside, much like her hedgehog, but has a huge heart and is very
loyal. Then we would go to Bonus Round, the game-themed café where
Emelia and Alistair and Marisol can usually be found at and she could
teach me some tips to make me a better Settlers of Catan player.
Author Bio:
Jennifer Honeybourn works in corporate communications in Vancouver, British Columbia. She’s a fan of British accents, Broadway musicals, and epic, happily-ever-after love stories. If she could have dinner with anyone, dead or alive, she’d have high tea with Walt Disney, JK Rowling, and her nana. She lives with her husband, daughter and cat in a house filled with books. Wesley James Ruined My Life is her first novel.
