My Writing Process:

Everyone always asks what my writing process is like. I think they want to believe it’s some meticulously thought out process with graphs and maps and expert witnesses. When it truth it’s actually not all that complicated.

Honestly, half the time I don’t even know what I’m doing until it’s done. It ranges from book to book. Although, one common denominator with my books is they usually start with a dream or a daydream and I jot down that idea. Then I sit on it for a few days and it spirals into this whole story. Only then do I pick up a pen and let it take me.

Most times, I just write the scenes down as they come to me. I see the scenes play out in my head almost as if I’m there. At that point, I have to write it down immediately so I remember every detail. The best ideas come to me right when I lay my head down for bed and I eventually find myself up all night writing. But, I am a slave to my muse. I have to write when the story comes not when I want to. Once I have all these scenes typed up, I get to outlining and strategizing. It’s so much easier to see my story and what is missing if I have all the scenes lined up already.

The worst part is cutting a scene. Once you have all the scenes laid out and one just doesn’t jive with the rest. Especially if it’s a scene you really like. Sometimes I keep it for blog posts and stuff as a deleted scene. But most times I hit that dreaded delete button.
All in all, I have to say after the brilliant inspiration the process itself becomes long and tedious, but in the end I find it worth every late night, every hair pulled out, and tear shed. In the end, when you get the first great review or an email late at night telling you that someone couldn’t put your book down – it makes it all worth it.
