The
traffic on Delmar is backing up and the sidewalks are packed with the business
lunch crowd. My pickup is three blocks down on the other side of the street in
one of the free parking lots behind the shops and restaurants. I get to the
corner of North Skinker and start to cross with everyone else when I hear a
buzz. But I don’t recognize anyone in the crowd that’s starting to cross within
five feet. Besides, the only other First in St Louis that I know of is Maurice.
And nobody can miss Maurice in a crowd. Huh. I stay put, apologize to everyone
that’s bumping into me because they’re moving to cross. I look like an idiot
tourist that’s never seen a crosswalk. Everyone gets across, the light turns,
traffic starts back up and it’s just me standing here. Listening to that buzz.
What the hell? And now the buzz is moving up and down in pitch. And then it
starts to jump around. Oh fuck. I know what this is. As I recognize the
piercing sound, my adrenaline kicks in. I spin around looking for a girl.
Should be in her late teens, maybe twenty. I see the profile of a black girl
with shoulder-length braids sitting at one of the crowded tables at the corner
of the pastry shop behind me. It must be her.
Fifteen
feet away. Fifteen mother fucking feet away and I can hear her buzz. Shit.
That’s bad.
A
couple huge steps and I’m next to her. I need her to trust me and quickly so
that I can get her somewhere where there won’t be any witnesses.
John Smith is a First with a capital F. A First is someone
who is very strong and fast and heals real fast and can live for many, many,
many years without ageing. First keep themselves hidden from normal people as they
would not understand them and would be afraid of them.
First are tired of hiding who they are from the world and
want to come out and live their lives the way they want just like everyone else
but that could be very dangerous indeed.
John knows this because he has seen a lot in his lifetime
and he has lived for more years than he knows. John knows that it is best to
stay hidden. John lives his life from day to day helping other people with
little handy man jobs around the house.
John is trying to stay hidden but someone from his past
shows up on his door step wanting his help. John wants no part of this man and
his plan as he does not trust him. John comes close to losing his life when he
tells him no and tries to get away.
John has a secret that he is trying to keep hidden from
First and the world. Does this secret have anything to do with the young lady
he met earlier? Who is this woman? Why is John trying to keep her hid form
everyone?
Now John has some very dangerous people on his trail who are
trying to kill him and the young woman. John must now try to keep himself and
this lady alive long enough to stop his enemies and to find out what they are
up to.
The First was very intriguing and interesting story that
kept me hooked from the beginning. I loved the whole concept of the story with
the First and who they are and what they can do. The First is filled with
action from beginning to end.
I would recommend The First to all fans of science fiction
and thrillers with lots of suspense and mystery.

Kenner is the author of the John Smith thrillers and numerous short
stories published in the US and Japan. He was born in St Louis,
Missouri, in 1969, and grew up 30 miles southwest in High Ridge, MO.
He received a B.A. - English from the University of Missouri -
Columbia and an M.A. - Media Communications from Webster University
before moving to Wakayama, Japan, with his wife to teach English as a
Second Language to public school children for three years. Now back
in St Louis, he enjoys writing suspenseful, action-packed thrillers,
painting, traveling, and volunteer work for local literacy
non-profits.
