Blurb:

Neglected by her mother, abused by her stepfather, and trapped in an oppressive cult, Willow Sands has lived the past three years with the shadow of her fifteenth birthday hanging over her. That was the day her mother handed her over to David, the son of their leader, promising her a future even more bleak than she’d ever imagined. Now, with her eighteenth birthday and the day of her wedding fast approaching, she’s almost come to accept her fate.

Hope was the last thing Willow expected to feel this close to her wedding, but that’s exactly what she finds in Jared. The more time she spends with him, the more haunted she becomes by the freedom she let slip through her fingers all those years ago. She knows if she wants a real future she’ll have to break free of the crushing grip the cult has on her, and the more she gets to know Jared, the more determined she becomes to gain her freedom once and for all.

My Review:

Willow Sands lived her life inside the walls of the commune never having set foot outside until the day she escaped for a short time. Willow lives in a commune where the women do exactly as they are told by the leader Father David or suffer the consequences.

When the girls in the commune turn fifteen a husband is chosen for them and they are to spend the night with said man. The girls in this community are not told any of what is expected of them on this night. So when the girls go into this night they have no clue as to what is waiting for them all they know is that they are to be submissive to their husbands to be.

Growing up in seclusion as the girls did they have no one to help them to know what that night consist of. Life inside the commune is way different than life on the outside.

Willow is not like the other women in the commune she is much stronger and doesn’t want to live her life always bowing down to men and being beaten day after day like her mother.

Willow has all but given up any kind of hope for a different life; she meets Jared who makes her see that there may be hope for a life on the outside away from the commune and these people. Jared makes her feel safer and more comfortable about being with another human than anyone she has ever met. He makes her feel as if everything is going to be ok and that there is more to life than this.

While reading The Book of David I had so many different emotions running through me at the same time. I was feeling sad, lonely, scared, guilty, anger all at the same time. I just felt like I wanted to cry all day. At first I didn’t know what it was but then I realized it was the book and the characters in the book you know feeling what they were probably feeling or anyone that may have experienced the same things.

I know things like this go on in our world all the time but I never looked at it or thought about it this deeply before. I can never ever know what anyone that has gone through something like this feels nor can I ever imagine it but I do feel for them and think about them. This is a hard review for me to write with all the emotions that I have running through me at the moment and being frustrated because I can’t put into words how I truly feel.

The Book of David is a sad story but one that lots of people need to read. Although it has made me feel sad, angry and guilt I am so glad that I had the opportunity to read such a well written story. Maybe if more people see and read The Book of David word just may get out and help save someone from making the same mistake or even stop it from happening.
