Rose Trewin is on the run. Pursued by memories of her father, she runs from city to city, seeking normalcy. But Rose can’t escape her past, or the magic running through her veins, the magic that allows her to slip through the shadows unnoticed. The magic her father once used to mold her into a mercenary sent to destroy his enemies. Now her magic is growing and changing, becoming something new and untamable. Rose is unable to rest. Wolves wrapped in fog follow her relentlessly along the countryside. Desperate, she uses her magic to escape, but the shadows are pushing her towards the center of a
conspiracy. Now, her country teeters on the brink of a civil war as a Lord Governor gathers power against the king. An enemy, with magic similar to her own, emerges in the chaos of
political intrigue. Faced with a country at war and a king brought to his knees, Rose must accept who she is and harness her powers in order to save her country and herself.

Interview with Author Natalie Johanson

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?

Dragon. I love dragons. They need to be the medieval dragons over Chinese style dragons. They're noble and majestic and pretty cool.

How many hours a day do you put into your writing?

It would be easier to say how many hours a week. I would love to be able to write everyday, to have the time but it's just not possible. I do most of my writing on the weekends, Fridays and Saturdays. I usually average about 15 hours a weekend though.

Do you read your book reviews? If yes, do they affect what you write in the future?

I do. Sometimes I think I shouldn't because not all of them are good, but every review can be useful. If they're bad, why are they bad? If there is something consistent between them then maybe that's something that needs to be addressed in the next book. Maybe it's just a style thing and not everyone is going to like the way I write. The good ones help to offset the bad ones.

Do you leave hidden messages in your books that only a few people will find?

No, not really.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Shadow's Voice?

I would love to! Rose Trewin, the heroine, is a bit of a troubled soul. She has a history she isn't proud of and magic she doesn't really want. Her whole goal is to find a quiet little corner in the world to live out her life but that just doesn't seem to be in her future.

Rose meets King Micah, a kind and reserved king who'd rather not be king. Micah becomes enchanted by Rose, and her no nonsense attitude and spunk.

Can you tell us a little bit about your next books or what you have planned for the future?

I'm working on the sequel to Shadow's Voice, currently unnamed but I'm thinking Shadowstalker. I hope to make this into trilogy at least. We'll see what the plot muses say.

Do you allow yourself a certain number of hours to write or do you write as long as the words come?

I'll write as long as there are words and the time to write them. When the muse is talking I write!

What inspires you to write?

Other authors, reading other stories. I have my story in my head, that one that I've been trying to put down on paper for years but finding the inspiration to do that? That comes from reading other amazing stories.

Would you rather

Read fiction or non-fiction?
Fiction, but there are a few memoirs out there I love!

Read series or stand-alone?
Series.

Read Science fiction or horror?
Science fiction all the way

Read Stephen King or Dean Koontz
Dean Koontz. Odd Thomas all the way!

Read the book or watch the movie?
Book first. I love being able to create the world the author describes in my head, but I'm a huge movie junkie too so...

Read an ebook or paperback?
I love physical books. I have a library in the office I write in and it's full with books. There's something about the aesthetic of holding the book and the world with all the pages. I'll take a physical book over an E-reader anytime.

Be trapped alone for one month in a library with no computer or a room with a computer and Wi-Fi only?
Library! How can you pass up the beauty of a library? And no one to bug you while you're trying read? Perfect

Do a cross-country book store tour or blog tour online?
My perfect answer would be a cross-country book store tour just because I love to travel and see new places. It would be the perfect excuse to travel.

About the Author

Natalie Johanson grew up and lives in the valley of Salt Lake City surrounded by the beautiful Rocky Mountains. Her days are spent trying to herd her two cats, Holmes and Watson. Natalie’s summers are spent camping with her fiancĂ©e or doing obstacle races with her best friend. She usually spends her winters hiding from the snow. This is the first of what will hopefully become a trilogy, but sometimes the characters do what they want.
