Interview with Patrice D. Wilkerson

How many books have you written and which is your favorite?

I have written two books. My first book that I published was a collection of poems entitled, “Through It All, I’m Going to Make It.” “My Favorite Season is Spring” is the second book that I have written. I would have to say my favorite book is “My Favorite Season is Spring” because it is a children’s book. It has always been a dream of mine to publish a children’s book so to see that dream come true is really amazing.

Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?

I want each book of mine to stand on its own.

How did you come up with the title for your book?

I absolutely love the season of Spring. I wanted to write a picture book so that children could learn about spring and also relate to the character.

How long did it take you to write this book?

It took me about a year to write this book.

    What does the title mean?

The picture book takes readers on an exciting journey with Susie as she describes her favorite season.

What did you learn when writing the book?

I learned a lot about the field of children’s books, the various categories and formats. I learned that in order to write an engaging story you have to go inside your character and see the world from their eyes.

    What surprised you the most?

I was surprised at how smooth the process went as far as writing my book. Jan-Carol Publishing was so wonderful to work with. Brooke Beaver’s illustrations were outstanding and she was so great to work with. I had a really great team to help me accomplish my dream.

What do you do to get inside your character’s heads?

The way that I was able to get inside the character’s heads in my picture book was to recall my own joy and happiness that I feel about spring and evoking that same emotion in the character.
