Interview with A.G. Billig, author of the rockstar romance My Life on Tender: Arina and Cal
How many books have you written and which is your favorite?
I started writing fiction when I was 8 years old and completed my first novel at 15. Counting that book, I’ve written six books so far. Love as our inner super power is the main theme of all of my books whether it’s fiction (novels and short stories) or non-fiction (personal growth, relationships). My Life on Tender: Arina and Cal, a rockstar romance is actually my first published novel, and I’m excited about the warm feedback from the readers and having it turned into a TV series.
If you’re planning a sequel, can you share a tiny bit about your plans for it?
Arina and Cal is the first book in My Life on Tender trilogy. Arina Gramma, the protagonist, is a young Romanian and digital marketing maven traveling the world to find true love. And what can be a better place to meet the man of your dreams when you’re in a foreign country than dating apps? On Tender, Arina matches with Cal, a sexy rockstar from SoCal. If you love beaches, LA and Huntington Beach, you will love this book. The sequel is set for release in February 2024 and the third book probably in May, on my birthday. Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?
The books, especially the first two in My Life on Tender trilogy can be read as stand alones or as a series. Arina and Cal is available in KU for those who have a Kindle Unlimited subscription. While the first book is set in Southern California, the second book will take you to all the romantic places in Dublin, Ireland and the third one to sunny and exotic Thailand.
How did you come up with the title for your book?
Tender is, as you might have guessed by now, Tinder. I had a Tinder account for many years and some of my own experiences inspired me in writing Arina’s. The series title summarizes one of the main themes of the book and came to me in a flash of inspiration. Other themes included in the book are: pursuit of dreams; betrayal and forgiveness; finding true love. There are also tropes that romance readers love such as grumpy sunshine; one of us is famous; unexpected ending; blind to love; and emotional scars. The titles of the chapters are inspired by song titles I love and there is a playlist available on YouTube for those who purchase the book. The paperback version includes illustrations. I’m passionate about photography and I was happy to include some of the pictures I took while I was living in Huntington Beach, CA.
How long did it take you to write this book?
It took me about two months to write the first draft. The revision, editing, and publishing process was much longer .
What did you learn when writing the book?
Consistence and outline help me be a better writer. While writing the book, I set aside time in the morning to write about 2,000 words (the approximate length of a chapter). Also, having a clear outline for the book made it easier for me to complete the book. It’s making an art piece having the right mold; as long as you have this container, you can play with the raw materials you’re going to put into the mold as much as you want.
What surprised you the most?
Some of the actions and decisions made by the characters. A few chapters into the book, they took a life of their own, and I was but powerless in following with them, eager to see where they go.
Have you ever killed off a character your readers loved?
I write contemporary romance and women’s fiction, so there is not much room for killing off a character in my books.
What do you do to get inside your character’s heads?
I spent as much time as I can getting to know them prior to starting writing the book. Once I get into it, they take a life and will of their own and I remain open to all they want to share with the readers. I become a mere scribe, theirs.
