Holden
Genre: YA Romance
Release Date: February 21st 2017
Summary:
Tessa O’Connell is a girl as ordinary as they come-or so she thinks. Her aim
for senior year is to keep her head down yet somehow manage to convince her
childhood love Jay Stone to love her back. What she isn’t prepared for is for
Jay’s brother, Cole to return to town and change the life she’s always been
seemingly content to live. Tall, gorgeous as all hell and a bad boy with ocean
blue eyes and the perfect edge of adorability, he was her greatest tormentor,
her number one enemy. But the guy that’s come back is like no one Tessa’s ever
come across. He challenges her, he tests her limits, he forces her to bring out
the girl she’s long ago buried under a veil of mediocrity and most of all he
compels her to consider that perhaps the boy that infuriates her to the point
of no return might just her guardian angel.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in The Bad Boy's
Girl?
I’ll start off with Cole because he’s always been a reader
favourite and maybe mine as well. When I started writing the story and
especially Cole’s character, I wanted to do something different with the
concept of a bad boy. He’s definitely rough around the edges and has some of
the quintessential bad boy characteristics but I like to think there’s so much
more to him than being dark and broody. He’s a good guy at heart, someone who’s
been in love with a girl for a very long time without expecting reciprocation.
Cole is a protector, a great friend and someone who’s always willing to go the
extra mile for the ones he loves. There’s a reason so many people fell in love
with him and if you read the book you realise that one can’t help but do that.
Tessa came a lot easier to me because there some aspects of her that were so
relatable to me even then. She’s shy and insecure and keeps to herself but at
the same time, once you get to know her you realise that there’s so much more
to her than what you see. As she comes out her shell, you realise that Tessa is
hilarious and witty, strong and someone every girl can identify with simply
because of how she reacts to the ridiculous situations she finds herself in.
Other characters include Tessa’s best friends, Beth Romano and Megan Sharp who’re
both always fun to write about because they form such a contrast to Tessa. Beth
is the edgy and cool character in the book and her life revolves around music.
She’s someone who always says what’s on her mind and doesn’t let anyone tell
her what to do. In Cole’s absence, it’s Beth who acts as a kind of protector
for Tessa because no one dares mess with her. What I also love about Beth is
her vulnerability which she seldom allows anyone to see and of course her
killer fashion sense.I wanted to have an equally dynamic and strong love
interest for Megan and that’s where Travis comes in. Travis, interestingly is
the ‘fallen’ one, someone we see as having hit rock bottom at the beginning of
the book. His story is closely entwined with Tessa and Beth and seeing how he
rebuilds his life after losing all that he once considered important. It’s
really rewarding to see him grow as a character and he’s one of my favourites
for sure. Megan is Tessa’s other best friend and the book worm of the group.
She’s super smart and ambitious but that doesn’t stop her from being empathetic
or joining her friends when they get into trouble. I love writing about Megan
because she starts off being such a goody two shoes but by the end of the book
she learns to escape her parents’ hold and becomes her own person. It helps
that she also finds a bad boy of her own. If the book were to have antagonists,
they would be Nicole Bishop and Jay Stone. Nicole is Tessa’s infamous former
best friend turned bully. She’s vindictive and petty and takes joy out of
harassing Tessa and she’s committed the ultimate violation of the best friend
code by stealing Tessa’s childhood crush Jay for her own. Jay ‘Jason’ Stone is
also Cole’s stepbrother so there’s an obvious rivalry between the two for Tessa’s
affections. The story is a lot about how Tessa is able to move past her
feelings for Jay and is able to find it in herself to forgive Nicole so both
these people are necessary for Tessa’s growth and for her relationship with
Cole.
